sunbathinganimal Posted January 19 Posted January 19 (edited) I really like Perfect Illusion, I think it's one of the few good songs on Joanne. However, commercially it was an outright bomb compared to Gaga's other leads, not even debuting in the top 10 in major markets such as the US or UK. I mean, compare its certifications to Stupid Love — a song that leaked six weeks in advance and most people consider to be her weakest lead by far. So what went so wrong with Perfect Illusion? Was its sound too abrasive to the GP? Was the damage from ARTPOP too much to overcome? Discuss. Edited January 19 by sunbathinganimal
naval23 Posted January 19 Posted January 19 It's just noise and wasn't lead single material despite decent lyrics and vocals 3 1
40000000000000 Posted January 19 Posted January 19 there is no interest in solo lady gaga music + her songs are generally not very good. 10 4 3 12
ohwow Posted January 19 Posted January 19 too screamy the concept of "perfect illusion" is not really that obvious to the gp grating electro-guitar sound was not gp-friendly kinda a mess all around 4
NOW Posted January 19 Posted January 19 For one, she strayed too far away from Kevin Parker's demo. Imagine if she followed that sound and vocal production instead. But I still like it for what it is though. 4

Great808 Posted January 19 Posted January 19 She released a Rock/Alt inspired song at the height of Tropical House after a hiatus and did absolutely NO promo for it. All of this, particularly no promo set the song up for very limited success. 3

wish Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Literally one of her worst singles, sorry. The mixing/production just doesn't sit right with me 3
Katy.Kat.23 Posted January 19 Posted January 19 (edited) She lost her ability to write a good song when she lost her passion for skiing, I fear Edited January 22 by Katy.Kat.23 1
State of Grace. Posted January 19 Posted January 19 (edited) It's still my 2nd fave lead after Bad Romance and I'll always wish for more songs like that from her. People often criticize the "screams" when that's literally what makes the song but the reason it was never gonna be a hit though. Th Kevin demo is a whole other vibe that does not fit Gags imo. Also the entire musical landscape simply wasn't favorable for the song to be a hit imo, which is why the fact that Interscope thought it was "lead single worthy" is still mind-boggling to me. You got The Chainsmokers taking over the charts, Rap/Hip-Hop smashing, Trap-Pop on the rise, and.....you think this disco/rock song with shouty vocals was gonna be hit for Gaga? After ARTPOP? GreatestLoveofAll Posted January 19 Posted January 19 first of all we need to stop acting like Joanne was a bad album. She was in her country-rock bag and did great. Yet Perfect Illusion was a weak lead- probably her weakest and thats saying something considering she created Stupid Love like four years after. it wasnt pop enough to do well on radio and Gaga's last era showed her popularity was already slipping so the fact that it even debuted top 20 was a miracle looking back. "Million Reasons" was the album highlight and should have been dropped as the lead instead. 1 3 4
