Mr. Mendes Posted January 19 Posted January 19 This really pissed me off. Imagine looking at someone trying to clean their life up—and doing a damn good job of it—and holding their abuse issues over their heads like this. This man has been working hard to stay sober. He’s doing it for himself and for his family. He’s been putting the time and effort, professionally and personally, and they’re reducing him down to a “bad boy former addict” Instead of talking about him like that they could talk about how he has gotten sober and is the lead in acclaimed tv show he is winning awards for, or how he got Oscar buzz for a movie he was just in, or how he’s showing his kids that its possible to get yourself back and track and that past mistakes don’t define you forever. Getting sober is one of the hardest things someone can do. Making the conscious choice every day to say no is a hill that so many people have found it impossible to climb, and for those that are on that climb this is such a slap in the face. It's a nasty and irresponsible framing of someone who is trying to not have their life defined by that darkness of their past, and yet that darkness is front and center. **** all gossip media but EPSECIALLY **** the Daily Mail. They're getting eaten up in the comments and rightfully so. 3
GraceRandolph Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I mean... nothing they wrote was false. I'm kind of tired of the constant cheerleading around people getting sober. People who have to deal with addicts and their behavior in our lives rarely get celebrated in the way addicts do for getting clean. 2 1 4 31
Sombre Posted January 19 Posted January 19 God forbid anyone turns their life around and excels. They sound bitter. 7

Oh believe me, I'm aware. I spent 13 years of my life living with an abusive addict. Only escaped it because he died. That's why this made me so mad. And that's exactly why I cheerlead and champion someone who's trying to get clean. Because they need it. Because they can't do it on their own. Because holding their past over their heads all the time doesn't allow them to change their future. It SHOULD be celebrated when someone decides to turn their life around. It's an amazing feat to get clean and stay clean. It's a daily battle. They have to make that choice each and every single day of their lives. Yes families and friends have to go through hell. I know that hell like the back of my hand. Yes they're deserving of cheerleading as well. But never, ever, ever stop supporting and cheering for and championing people who're fighting to get clean. Because if they don't have people in their corner cheering them on, they're not going to win that battle and then it just makes everyone involved's life worse. And it shouldn't just be up to the family to be those cheerleaders. Society needs to change how they discuss addiction and stop trying to shame people into getting sober and instead encourage them positively. The best thing you can do for families of people living with drug addiction is speak out loudly and forcefully about eliminating the negative dialogue that exists in our society around people with addiction. That negativity and dehuminization is exactly what encourages someone to continue rather than seek help for their illness. Edited January 19 by Mr. Mendes 34 12
discosean Posted January 19 Posted January 19 We should be celebrating sobriety because it is very difficult to maintain. It's a lifelong struggle. And this applies to EVERYONE, not just for celebrities and famous people. Major props to him for getting the help he needed and trying to stay on the right path for his career and his family. 6 4
Sugar-Rush Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Daily Mail is trash wbk. Have you seen their comment sections? The folks on there have less chill than even the old ATRL SYG topics. 1
Dolce Vita Posted January 19 Posted January 19 the dailymail and its commenters are all miserable so i’m not surprised 2
May Posted January 19 Posted January 19 i actually sent this headline to my bf the other day when it first ran bc i was so shocked they really just laid out all his business like that
KingWitch Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I get it, the whole point of their article is basically "pretty privilege". Basically how being good looking has allowed him to get away with these things while someone way less attractive would constantly be vilified for them .

They called him big nose, protruding eyes “alt” type man not conventionally attractive. They express shock that he’s seen such a following for his looks.
Archetype Posted January 19 Posted January 19 (edited) He’s still a chain smoker, so idk how “sober” he is. I hope Rosalia is helping him quit bc she shouldn’t be around smoke that much for the sake of her voice. This article is super unnecessary and rude, but it also doesn’t lie. ugo Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Just don’t read or click on it you’re doing what they want you to do
jakeisphat Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I thought objectifying him was the reason people were mad and then I read the rest and they just went in like that. So unnecessary.
imabadkid Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Hollywood wonders why Gen Z has tuned them out and why no one cares about actors anymore… this is why. The way they hype up the most bland boring men is just… an atrocity. I’ve seen cuter guys at McDonalds tbh 2 3
