Many chart hits, but have any of them reached global status across all generations for instance? Where's her Thriller? Girls Just Want To Have Fun? I Will Always Love You? etc. When you're no longer relevant, those kind of smash hits always keep your name afloat. She should, That's The Way Love Goes, Together Again, All For You deserve to be on that tier but they never caught on in the streaming era due to mismanagement and the boycott. 1

Honestly, I don't believe that the Super Bowl scandal would stop a song from becoming a classic, if it had to... Especially in this day and age, where old songs resurface. I mean her brother had a whole pedophilia scandal, and he's still a legend. 1

Her brother is also dead, which caused his entire career to be reappraised and had a movie, a musical and a ton of other media made about him. Same with Queen, the Beatles and all the other male acts people like to bring up. The fact is that Janet's music has been absent from the culture for literally 20 years. How are these songs supposed to become classics if people couldn't hear them. 2 1
Dula Peep Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Janet needs her Saltburn moment But what song? I could see All For You or Together Again blowing up with a dance trend on TikTok or a slower jam Any Time, Any Place or That's The Way Love Goes 3 1

She actually did Janet’s choreo and she won. It was a glorious moment. I think that what Janet needs is to release a remastered greatest hits of her very best singles. And the old ones should be revamped or remixed or so. And really do promo for it. Because the hits are there. They already exist and they’re amazing! 2
spree Posted January 23 Posted January 23 did I just read that Janet does not have any classics? and that's because of Spotify? 2

spree Posted January 24 Posted January 24 i think the issue fans have is not that her streaming is low, but rather people choose to not listen because her stats are low, as if that is an indication of quality or something. Ya'll really are missing out on one of the best MPG discographies out there. I lived thru her imperial phase. She was just as big as Michael and Madonna, maybe a notch lower but still very huge. She definitely outlasted Michael by the turn of the century. All For You and Someone to Call My Lover were fantastic. No one can tell me those aren't classics. Just like Escapade, Let's Wait Awhile, Control, Nasty, That's the Way Loves Goes, Again, Come Back to Me, etc. All classics. 3

Goaty Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Her streaming numbers aren't evidence that she doesn't have classics. Her streaming numbers showcase her poor generational penetration within Gen Z and Millennials. I'm pretty optimistic that she'll have a resurgence (certainly with her eventual death, but hopefully before that). You can't make something as incredible as The Velvet Rope and not have it bounce back into pop culture at some point. And even if she doesn't - she's influenced so many countless artists that are huge today that her position in the pantheon of music titans is guaranteed. Anything else at this point is icing on the cake. 2 1

Especially in this day and age, where old songs resurface. Part of what makes a classic enduring throughout generations is its ubiquity in curated media. For example, we have to hear "Thriller" every Halloween for it to continue its penetration into new generations. Through a myriad of reasons theorized in this thread - I don't think Janet got that with her hits and thus she lost her footing with two generations of music listeners. 1
spree Posted January 24 Posted January 24 she's going to resurface at some point, her catalog and influence is too great not to. She SHOULD be pulling Mariah Carey numbers right now. 1

Right from pre-streaming to the streaming era, these stats dont make up for the majority of listeners in Africa and middle east. move along
Riverbank Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Obviously there's the SB controversy which affected her career, BUT she could be pulling decent numbers if she cared a little bit more about her legacy. It's great that her team finally took notice of this and started re-issuing her back catalogue like Mariah and Madonna have been doing. Her discography is one of the strongest ones among MPGs and it's kind of a crime that most of her videos on YT were geo-blocked until like 2 years ago.
PopMusicJunkie Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Control - Rhythm Nation 1814 - janet. - The Velvet Rope - All For You This album run alone is such a ride and any pop star would kill to have. 1
spiritboy Posted January 25 Posted January 25 She is basically a nobody in Turkey but i think it’s because R&b was never a thing here. The Velvet Rope deserves a billion streams though, such a modern classic.
