She hasn’t made any effort to promote herself in the rest of the world especially last decade. And the thread is about streams and I’m not sure Africa and the Middle East contribute a lot to global streaming numbers Africa/ middle east arent desolate lands. 100% of the continent (africa) has internet and they stream, if not on spotify/apple music then on youtube. They're just less likely to be included 4
popmusicisdead Posted January 18 Posted January 18 (edited) idk but Discipline (Janet Jackson album) deserves 100B streams Edited January 18 by popmusicisdead
ImsoLOUD Posted January 18 Posted January 18 The Super Bowl had a huge effect on her career back then unfortunately. As many people felt the stunt was intentional on her end. The GP protected poor little privledged Justin instead. I could see her music having a resurgence with the newer generation at some point if the right songs go viral. 5

JawBreaker Posted January 18 Posted January 18 (edited) Idk how shes above Michael on the Billboard All Time Hot100 artist list. I dont think I know any of her songs. I definitely heard snippets here and there but that's about it. I only know her as MJs little sister Edited January 18 by JawBreaker 2 2
TeemoR Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Outside the US: People don't know her, they never did. In the US: I think people respect her and she has left some impact to this generation's pop artists, but still, her music is forgotten (maybe because of the whole Superbowl drama). 1 1 7
tost1 Posted January 18 Posted January 18 People always get mad when someone says she's forgotten, but the reality is if she wasn't people would be streaming her 4 1 4

You don't end up being forgotten if you have multiple 100M streamed songs on Spotify, especially for an 80s act. 1 1
Taemira Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Her team ruined her potential with that terrible management of her YouTube channel. 3

Blue Monday Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Streaming numbers are fickle; didn't her most recent tour do very well? I'd say that matters a hell of a lot more 1
Zefierce Posted January 18 Posted January 18 ATRL has a hard time facing the cold hard truth that she’s been mostly forgotten. Most of the newest generation prob doesn’t even know Micheal Jackson has a sister named Janet who had her own solo career. 2 1 1
Reginald Posted January 18 Posted January 18 It's WELL beyond time for a new Janet album. Her last album was before streaming really took off, in 2015 1
Moth 2 The Flame Posted January 18 Posted January 18 1 hour ago, HardBambi said: Both of them deserve their streaming numbers and so much more but Janet should be in that top 5. Top 3 tbh I don't know if you were around ATRL about 5-6 years ago, but there used to be daily/weekly threads from OJH back then always questioning Janet's legacy to shading her poor Spotify/Youtube streaming numbers because she didn't even have 1 100M streamed song on Spotify. 100M according to them was the benchmark to supposedly having a classic streamed song, now that Janet has multiple it seems like that still isn't good enough and the goalpost is being moved. And to answer the OP, playlisting plays a huge factor for legacy artists streams on their old hits and Janet's playlisting is awful, compared to her peers anyway. 4
robbyds Posted January 18 Posted January 18 1 hour ago, Love Again said: I love her to death but it’s kind of her own fault, she USED to be global and anyone who denies that doesn’t have their facts straight but her global appeal has diminished over the years largely due to her own doing. The Together Again Tour should have visited all continents not just North America. It was the perfect opportunity to promote her back catalogue, mess around with TikTok a bit and atleast raise her streaming numbers a little bit. But she doesn’t care Her large unpresence in the 2010s also doesn’t help. A fair assessment. I think a lot has to do with her nonchalant attitude. She's so unbothered and outside of touring, she not doing much to promote her work to the younger generation who actually streams. 1
!ngwe Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Her fans do not use streaming and new generation does not know her 2
wraith Posted January 18 Posted January 18 (edited) All the reasons stated, esp around the blacklist but also lack of effort in preserving her legacy and keeping her in the public eye in the last ten years. I hoped the documentary would be turning over a new leaf for her but it led to nothing. Edited January 18 by wraith 3
Elusive Chanteuse Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Twitter told me was was the true queen of pop so idk But honestly she should have more streams than some of these people
OrgVisual Posted January 18 Posted January 18 She's quite local tbh. And to be fair, RnB-based artists always have less streams than pop acts 2 1 1
HardBambi Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 Billboard HOT100 Janet: 10 number 1s 28 top10 Cindy Lauper: 2 number 1s 8 top10 The thing is that Cindy’s few hits perfectly fit those 80s playlists 1 1
Pheromosa Posted January 18 Posted January 18 She was a victim of one of the most successful smear campaigns in history. Are you 12? 6 1
