DPP’s Lai Ching-te (pro-independence party) win Taiwanese election; China mad

TAIPEI, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Taiwanese voters swept the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te into power on Saturday, strongly rejecting Chinese pressure to spurn him, as China said it would not give up on achieving "reunification".

Lai's party, which champions Taiwan's separate identity and rejects China's territorial claims, was seeking a third successive four year term, unprecedented under Taiwan's current electoral system.

Sis, didn't they just re-elect a government whose entire policy is status quo de-facto independence?

The irony is that this global focus on Taiwan reiterates how little of Taiwan's future is actually a choice any Taiwanese can make. They exist in the mind of 99% of the world as a proxy war.

Yes, China is aggressive and the Taiwanese government should have its autonomy, but it's clear Taiwanese still benefit from Chinese trade and not having China as an aggressive foe (being sanctioned by China's trade partners is more likely than military involvement). And then clearly American trade also benefits Taiwan, yet there's Western forces who want to push separatism to the point of harming the Taiwanese economy for the sake of also harming China's. There's a reason why the reception by Taiwanese leaders was apprehension when seeing just how fairweather and unorganized America's support for Ukraine actually is. There's no NATO in Asia like there is Europe.

Neolibs have discovered campist as their new favorite term, and it's clear some reactionaries DO want China to foolishly preemptively strike Taiwan despite that it would serve no one, but no other issue is quite as blatant with how nearly both sides are driven by some ulterior motive with how Westerners sees Taiwan not as an entity but a means to harming China. Most ATRL threads even show interest in Taiwan as being rooted in, before anything else, an anti-China sentiment (the awkward reality of most Taiwanese being ethnically Han and literally part of the non-indigenous population who did things like cheat and steal the remaining 5% native population out of their land ).
