this is also a PAINFULLY obvious Madonna homage

So....when Camila does it, it's "PAINFULLY obvious homage" but suddenly it's a problem for Ariana.

Her Caroline Polachek homage is my favorite, she ATE that. So subtle. :clap3:

Ariana is a great example of how to reference in a good way. You take enough elements so it's obvious what you reference, but you don't copy every shot by shot AND you add your own elements as well. That's how art has evolved throughout history. Truly "new ideas" only work in niche art, they're far from being mainstream-compatible.

It's PAuLLAH AbduLLAH. Please put some respect on our our Arab Jewish dancing goddess.

Why is it so harddd for ATRL stans to actually enjoy when artists release music? Meanwhile, stans on TikTok, Instagram, and even Twitter can actually manage to admire and understand inspiration through artists work

You’re not a critic, you’re a gay man behind a KEYBOARD :deadbanana2:. It seems as if y’all pride yourselves so much on your “understanding” of music that it keeps you from actually enjoying… the music :ahh:

okay guess she should do a remix performance with a paula dance break and have madonna do a spoken word on the bridge

First of all, certain elements were inspired by Paula’s video. But Paula’s video wasn’t original either. Her video was a direct homage to:

The meltdowns. :rip:

It was just a joke to give the underrated Paula some attention on ATRL. :rip:

And the first one talking about gays behind keyboards with that butthurt response. :rip:

I’m honestly done with the samples, homage, throwbacks.

This was in 1991. Whitney and her mom were fuming that Paula of all people was smashing with a ballad ("Rush Rush") while Whitney's own record label was trying to get her to do new jack swing/dance songs and choreography like Paula did.

I wonder if Whitney would be mad again that current pop girls are still paying tribute to Paula.

lol Ari need to "un-rip" it because that was one of the most watered down tributes I've ever seen. I still like the song but she could've came harder with the visual. All the video made me do was want to go watch CHS and get my life. I haven't been back to "yes, and?" since.

See Paula took this Fosse number and elevated it. Ariana did the exact opposite lol.

Whitney was pissed that "Rush, Rush" was the ballad smash she couldn't get at that time :dies:

Rush, Rush is so good. The live version is glorious.

I mean if Paula agrees to it and is praising Ariana, I don’t see what your real problem is. Perhaps you need to find a hobby

Why did you post this for? Whitney has had numerous smash ballads pre-The Bodyguard, but the difference is “Rush, Rush” was so big that it had the longest stay at #1 in history at the time. It also charted on the Year-End chart at #4.

Whitney didn’t have this yet.

Look the views of Rush Rush and the views of that video of Whitney (it's not one of her biggest hits), was bigger in THAT moment AND in USA, also nobodys remeber Hush Hush nowdays.

Apparently paying homage to a Legend is considered “ripping off” now?

The OP looks like a total clown making that the thread title :snowball:

Paula Abdul is not a legend, but other than that you're right.

I like how they included Nicole in there as well (their other fave :rip: )

Although Rush Rush was a big hit, to undermine Whitney's mega smash ballads is ingenuine. The charts in the 80s (Pre-Nielsen) were definitely all over the place where record labels would push a single, and then drop it like a hot potato and then immediately send another. Additionally there was a LOT of fraudulence and payola rampant since most of the sales were self-reported.

Whitney was pressed that someone who doesn't sing well at all and is "off-key on the record" was able to get success due to her image... referring to Paula's debut which had 6 bonafide hits on it and 4 #1 singles. (Paula was Off-key on Forever Your Girl & Opposites Attract)

Oh, you’re preaching to the choir. I am very familiar with Paula and Whitney’s charting history, and the music industry pre-SoundScan and after.

It is quite funny though how she takes a jab at her image because Paula didn’t have one. It’s not as if she marketed herself as this artist with edge, or sexually provocative, or anything like that. She was just a nice girl who could dance her behind off, and that’s what she was marketed as. Maybe Whitney was high and mixed her up with Madonna or something :dies:
