Barbenheimer is only behind Titanic as cultural phenomenon (and oscars will have between the nominated movies) in the last 25 years. Uhm… Black Panther and A Star Is Born has a word…

GeeDuval Posted January 9 Posted January 9 (edited) It was def a star studded evening BUT JO KOY did not bring any ratings. Ray Romano was funnier presenting with that lady than his monologue. and he is pretty funny with his raunchy jokes and family jokes, he’s very relatable. Don’t know what happened. The whole ceremony felt dry and flat tbh I guess writers were just playing it safe. Edited January 9 by GeeDuval

The main reason people tuned into the Oscars that year was solely because BP and ASAB. It’s the same as Barbie and Oppenheimer this year. Keep up. No one is saying it’s as big as or it’s less than. Both sets of film were pop culture phenomenons, and both sets of films garnered more interest for these award ceremonies. 1

I'm not denying that A Star is Born was successful, if that's your point then we're in agreement. It really was, in particular for a film of its genre. But it was categorically not a cultural phenomenon in the same scale as Barbie, or Black Panther itself. Going just by box office, which is one of the criteria that you mentioned yourself: Barbie: $1,445,630,407 (no. 1 movie in the US and worldwide) Oppenheimer: $952,039,870 (no. 5 in the US, no 3. worldwide) Black Panther: $1,349,926,083 (no 1. in the US, no 2. worldwide losing only to Infinity War, itself another major event) A Star is Born: $436,433,122 (not in the top 10 in either metric) What's the outlier? The film provided plenty of fodder and memes for the music/film fans. But at the end of the day the audiences it attracted to the theater were people already interested in those topics (e.g., Gaga) to an extent. The magic of the other films is how they brought in new audiences and were ubiquitous even outside the usual circles, going as far as having people dress up and plan parties not only in the US but also internationally in the case of Barbie.
DamianSolo Posted January 9 Posted January 9 The content was simply there, with all that had released last year. People will watch if it's worth watching.
CottageHore Posted January 9 Posted January 9 As if that matters. Taylor Swift was in attendance and Oppenheimer and Barbie were two of the biggest, most talked about movies in a very long time
