I think they played very safe...

The Brutalist performing super well here kind of surprised me. I wonder if it's strong enough to take BP :duca: this season is way more exciting than people said it would be

NYFCC Actress winner hasn't won at the Oscars since Queen Blanchett won in 2013.

Not too long ago it was the NBR Curse and now it's NYFCC Curse.

Nbr was 7 years. Ny so far is ten years, probably 11 now

Brutalist losing confirmed. Hasnt matched since 2011 with the artist.

It's exactly the kind of critics darling that audiences and the academy doesn't love like killers of flower, tar, drive my car, first cow, irishman

Marianne getting Best Actress is a nice boost to her campaign; Sony Pictures Classics is usually good at running stealth campaigns so she definitely shouldn't be counted out of Best Actress, especially as a previous nominee.

The main problem is being in a mike Leigh.

96 and 04 are the only times he got an actor in, when he got a director nom.

Despite critics loving his movies time after time.

And she has Bleeker street not Sony

so our top BP contenders so far are:

-a dramedy about a sex worker
-an epic about an immigrant's successes and struggles pursuing the American Dream
-a film adaptation of a novel shot from the first person POV
-a true story about how the arts and theater can bring people together

She has Bleecker Street which is actually horrible at getting acting noms. I still think she misses and we have:

Madison

Erivo

Kidman

Gascon

Jolie

----------

Moore, Ronan, Swinton: OUT

The Brutalist will be the pick of critics for BP but Conclave will probably take it. It's a pretty good hit and will have been in theater for longer and get more exposure to voters.

Saoirse Ronan went from possibly being a contender for nominations in both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress to likely getting snubbed entirely :rip:

I loved her in The Outrun. Best Actress is unfortunately a bloodbath this year — though it does make following the race more exciting and unpredictable.

I watched Conclave. Didn't like it at all.

What didn't you like about it?

Spoiler

I enjoyed it up until the ending, that was sort of nonsense :rip: no way would these highly ambitious and cunning folks vote for someone who they didn't even know existed a week ago, and if they found out he is intersex... well it's over

What do you see winning BP?

Ugh I don't know why I thought SPC had this one (maybe because they've had Leigh's other films before). Bleeker Street is pretty awful, and the fact that there were some festivals that decided to pass on Hard Truths is worrying... I could see a world where the Actor's Branch + BAFTA contingent makes a case for her specifically though, she has a nice narrative and is generally well regarded. More critic's prizes would def help though.

Moore and Swinton were never serious contenders I don't think, it seems like a lot of people are pretty cool on that movie in particular

Or maybe Wicked could surprise us all and win BP.

Thinking many people will rank that movie their #2 or #3 in preferential ballots.

Swinton is loved by the industry and TRND is distributed by SPC. I don't see her happening but it's more likely imo than people pretending Winslet has a chance.
