Cloröx Posted November 14 Posted November 14 The Substance deserves nominations across the board especially for best actress (Demi), best supporting actress (Margaret) and best makeup and hairstyling. I'm going hard campaigning for this masterpiece, come one academy time to break that cliche winning type of movie 5
ctlp27 Posted November 14 Posted November 14 It's def a weak weak season. Blitz was a letdown. Not bad, just completely forgettable (beautifully shot though). Anora was very good. But wtf were they thinking with a Palme d'Or. The movie is only elevated by Mikey, otherwise, I found it to be the weakest Sean Baker's movie in a while. I'm scared for Emilia Perez. After the good US reviews (and not so great French ones), it looks like Twitter is making fun of it today. Not surprise Wicked is getting some vibes, if it's at least enjoyable and good, I could understand how it could sneak in some acting categories. Honestly, why not even have a real conversation about Naomi Scott?? 1

But all of them were universally acclaimed on MC, unlike this horror movie
Donquizote Posted November 14 Posted November 14 Now that Queen Diaz is out from retirement, I wish someday she chose the right role and got nominated for Oscar Obviously she's an underrated actress. 1

Parasyte and Everything everywhere all at once in recent years showed that the Academy can award weird movie. Hopefully The Substance can snatch those noms. 1

She doesnt need that Oscar nom. Her filmography is better than most of the Oscar winning actress. A certified icon. But surely hope she is back for real and snatch more decent roles 1

Hector Posted November 15 Posted November 15 The way this felt even shorter This would make a great career nomination, even though she isn't given enough to do to really warrant a nomination. 1
homosexual_behaviour Posted November 15 Posted November 15 emilia perez was kind of a mess. zoe was the only great thing about it. karla did the best she could but the script let her down. i don't think she's happening at the oscars

LittleStarmen Posted November 15 Posted November 15 This is shaping up to be another mediocre award season
fridayteenage Posted November 15 Posted November 15 21stc supporting actress noms in at least 40% and less than 2% away from the lead's screentime (or sometimes even more than the lead's screentime): Emma Stone, The Favorite Rooney Mara, Carol Julia Roberts, August Osage County Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls 2
kimberly Posted November 16 Posted November 16 do people here think Anora will remain the top pick for best picture? I just do not get the hype about that film. Mikey Madison is great, sure, but best picture? wouldn't be a deserving winner in my opinion. at that point, give it to The Substance or something else that'd be a more interesting outcome. speaking of which, I kinda disagree with the Margaret Qualley discussion. she might have a similar screentime as Demi Moore, but Moore clearly leads the film imo. her character is much more dynamic and emotive. re: best picture, Conclave is my favorite of the top contenders I've seen, so far.
Kylizzle Posted November 16 Posted November 16 Emilia Perez was pretty good IMO. Definitely a weird film and will be the most divisive BP nominee, but it will get it. Saladana's category fraud is crazy though. Selena is the true supporting actress in that film. 8 hours ago, kimberly said: do people here think Anora will remain the top pick for best picture? Yes. Nothing else seems to be challenging it unless The Brutalist really hits. I would say Dune 2 or Wicked could mount big campaigns, but both are getting part 2s so it seems unlikely. Emilia Perez is too divisive. Sing Sing seems too small and forgotten. Conclave could do it, but will young voters want it over Anora? It seems to be down to those two.
fridayteenage Posted November 16 Posted November 16 (edited) conclave is about old white men so if they want to go basic that would be a simple choice. good box office, good reviews, oscar-y cast the closest in the last 50 years to being dominated by old white men is unforgiven where the 1st, 2nd, and 4th main cast members fit that. but Morgan freeman is 3rd. Antisocialites Posted November 16 Posted November 16 I'll watch it tonight probably but damn, Emilia Perez's hype kinda freefalling, didn't see that coming.
