Donquizote Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Torres will end up like Jonna Kulig or Renata Reinsve. Great performances in critically acclaimed movies, but not enough passion for Best Actress nominations.
Donquizote Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Mescal and Washington for acting nominations If Mescal ended up with two Best Actor nominations before reaching 30
Bends Posted October 19 Posted October 19 (edited) I watched Anora this week. Everything is perfect in this movie. The film successfully combines both drama and comedy, and contains many unexpected overflows. I think Mikey Madison is the perfect candidate for Best Actress. But I also understand perfectly well that a film about a stripper is unlikely to collect enough points among the voters. Edited October 19 by Bends 2
no_better Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Jealous for the US to have access to all these movies now and the UK always has them soo late
fridayteenage Posted October 19 Posted October 19 Quote NEON's exclusive six theater play of Cannes Palme D'or winner, Sean Baker's Anora, which is very va-va voom and on its way to posting the second-best opening theater average post Covid with $105K or an estimated $630K at six theaters. https://deadline.com/2024/10/box-office-smile-2-1236120024/ Smells like a Best Picture/Best Actress winner. 1

Won't be surprised if Demi gets populist votes and nominated for Best Actress. Her movie is a box office hit. It is well received by audiences and Demi knows a lot of people at Hollywood. It would be well deserved.
Donquizote Posted October 20 Posted October 20 Hoping that Ridley Scott to finally win his overdue Best Director this year
Diarrhoea Posted October 20 Posted October 20 I've now watched most of the contenders (the only one I think I still need to see is The Brutalist) and... good year? None really whelmed me (I guess Anora but I had sky-high expectations so perhaps my fault) and I don't see a clear frontrunner which is fun. I think I may be rooting for Emilia Perez out of the ones with a realistic chance because it's so random for an Audiard film but sticks the landing and my audience responded quite well finally got out of panned after Palme director jail 1
Luminary Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Anora really is that film. Hope it goes all the way Best Actress race is really Mikey's to lose at this point. I don't understand people calling it a weak year, I think it's actually quite strong and diverse, so many great performances I've seen already and I still need to see Maria.. but I fear it might be over for La Jolie (but she will get that nom) 1
Blue Jasmine Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Loved Anora! Probably my favourite of the year so far. Mikey's performance was amazing and it's winning calibre imo but need to see other nominees and how it goes. Seeing Emilia Perez in two days.. 1
KylieistBoi Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Zoe Saldana in Emilia Perez > Mikey Madison in Anora. Madison is lucky Saldana decided to commit category fraud.

Considering how weak this year is and how poor the acting categories are currently, I need her to get in somewhere. We need some interesting performances. This might be the first year in a longtime that I don't care about the top line nominees. There is no one really to root for. https://x.com/mcumagik/status/1847056676597219646?t=GCCKyekyU93NeVJDlEFXiA&s=19 https://x.com/3CFilmss/status/1846412390063079845?t=8oB_xpIyCelEs8OAaDoxHw&s=19 She's excellent (and the film genuinely stomps on multiple recent BP nominees), but there's no way she happens this season. The Substance is already the prestige horror of the year and Demi is the horror performance that will get any substantial awards traction. In a universe where TS/Demi aren't contenders, I think she'd materialize with a few critics noms- even a legitimate chance as a surprise fun/cool win at say New York- and maybe SAG, but there's not enough room for her considering genre bias. Hoping that I'm wrong though. 2
fridayteenage Posted October 22 Posted October 22 apparently substance is going comedy at the globes. wth Madison and Gascon there already, hmm... comedy globe actress nominees who ended up at oscars 2023 - 1 (after huge snub Robbie) 2022 - 1 2021 - 0 2020 - 0.5 (in supporting) 2019 - 0 2018 - 1 2017 - 2 (bio Robbie, previous nominee Ronan) 2016 - 2 (bio legend Streep, previous nominee stone) 2015 - 1 2014 - 0 2013 - 2 (legend Streep, previous nominee/bio Adams) 2012 - 1 2011 - 1 2010 - 1 The average is 1 since 2010.
Mordecai Posted October 22 Posted October 22 What happened to Samuel L Jackson in the supporting actor race? Haven't been paying much attention thus far but at the beginning of awards season people were saying the award was a lock for him, now he's nowhere to be seen

Fading Posted October 22 Posted October 22 Let's see if Emilia Pérez will prove itself as the talk of the town with broader audiences starting this week.
fridayteenage Posted October 23 Posted October 23 3 hour BP nominees this century Scorsese films with 0 wins: irishman killers wolf of wall street movies with $300 mil+ US box office: rotk avatar 2 oppenheimer all were in Adapted too. I can see brutalist having passion with critics more than anyone else...
lgaga1fan Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Thinking today about how Fantasia was unrightfully snubbed throughout the award season. Her performance was so fantastic in that movie and instead Nyad got nominated- 2
