DanyelP23 Posted March 2 Posted March 2 No matter what tomorrow, it's still going to be a great Oscar night: Best Picture Both Conclave and Anora would make good winners given the line-up. Best Actress Fernanda winning would be iconqiue for brazillias and would give us an almost Marcia Gay Harden moment again Demi winning would be a win for horror performances, and she's been a REAL star getting ha' due Mikey winning would be iconic because she's my favourite and we're due an ingenue win again (Emma last year doesn't count, she's not an ingenue anymore) Best Actor Chalamet winning would make him the youngest Best Actor winner ever. It would stop him from going the Leo route in pursuit of an Oscar for the next 20 years Brody at the end of the day gave a great performance 5
X~MoviePoP Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Im still here is good. Not great. Fernanda is good, very subdued performance. Not very showy. Kind of like ralph fiennes in conclave 1 1
hausofdave Posted March 2 Posted March 2 There's been 5 mother-daughter duos (excluding the Fernandas) to be nominated for acting Oscars: Bergman/Rossellini Ladd/Dern Garland/Minnelli Leigh/Jié Mí Hawn/Hudson In each of the instances, one of the pair have gone on to win the Oscar. 1

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted March 2 ATRL Moderator Posted March 2 Ddddd Emilia Pérez not winning a single category in that vote. Can I say something controversial? I actually kind of enjoyed it as a film. It's an interesting story that would have worked better not as a musical. Aside from Selena Gomez, it's got some good performances. I'll be happy for Zoe Saldaña when she wins that Oscar. Not anywhere near my top ten for the year, but certainly not the disaster that the haters have portrayed it as. 4 1
X~MoviePoP Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Seed of the sacred fig > im still here Seed is basically everything im still here was trying to show but a bit more uumph and epicness to it.

Oh, it's such a good movie! Incredibly powerful. My #3 for the year. But I don't want to diminish I'm Still Here. That movie had me sobbing.
Almodusa Posted March 2 Author Posted March 2 Yeah I was perfectly fine with EP as a movie, except the first half an hour that felt too musical for me. It felt unnecessary in the way people criticized JFAD for. After Zoe was Spoiler Kidnapped then I felt the story pick up. Think I teared up during the "Papa" number. Also… I don't think the film made Mexico just seem like a kidnapping/drug fueled place tbh. And I say this as half Mexican. The story highlighted a problem that does exist there but it didn't feel like that's what they were portraying the country to all be. Best Picture material? No. It was a fine film. 2

Not anywhere near my top ten for the year, but certainly not the disaster that the haters have portrayed it as. you're not wrong. I think as a film, in a vacuum, it is audacious and takes some interesting risks. if it had leaned more into the campiness of "La Vaginoplastia" or scrapped the terrible musical numbers, it could have actually been more liked by the masses. or it would at least have more people saying "I'm not defending KSG but..." the disaster of it all really begins when you get more context about who made the movie, why they made it, whether they represented the very real-life concepts (including the Spanish language) in the film accurately Selena is pretty awful in it but Zoe is also just good, and KSG is very brave for playing the pre-transition self of her character, but she's also not mind-blowing otherwise. and the editing... has a certain Netflix-y touch that I despise. 2

Achilles. Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I haven't seen Chen or Deadwyler, but I'm sure they're better than the lineup. From what I've seen of things that were actually on/near the academy's radar, I'd go: Michele Austin, Hard Truths Monica Barbaro, A Complete Unknown Aunjanue Ellis Taylor, Nickel Boys Margaret Qualley, The Substance Isabella Rossellini, Conclave With the two actual nominees being at the bottom and likely to be replaced by Chen and Deadwyler. Jones is fine too, about even with Barbaro but I think the latter is a bit more of a scene-stealer. I know Rossellini doesn't do much but that is kinda what the category is supposed to be and I think it's funny how people feel some sort of way about it. Any or all of the three His Three Daughters actresses could have enhanced the lineup as well. I know the industry rallied for Lyonne but I preferred Olsen. But my personal winner for the year is Divya Prabha in All We Imagine As Light.

Lyonne in Lead Actress would have made more room for Olsen/Coon to shine in Supporting, tbh. but probably none of them would have made it in the end regardless.

Come on. She’s got maybe five lines. It’s maybe the most embarrassing Oscar nomination of my lifetime and frankly a bit disrespectful of actual performances. Love you, Isabella! Divya Prabha is an inspired choice, though. Kani Kusruti is also great in that movie and I love that the Indie Spirits found a way to honor her with that random nomination for Girls Will Be Girls. I’ve got to admit, I don’t really get the Monica Barbaro thing. I didn’t feel like she had much of anything to do in A Complete Unknown. Elle Fanning had more interesting scenes, though I wouldn’t have nominated her either. 1
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted March 2 ATRL Moderator Posted March 2 It’s weird how there’s about 15 performances you could nominate for lead actress this year and yet I can barely fill out a supporting actress roster.
