Donquizote Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Frances was great in Nomadland. I wasn't mad when she won. But the real crime was when Kirby lost despite being the best one in that lineup. 1 1 1
Donquizote Posted March 1 Posted March 1 (edited) I think Madison is this year McDormand who won Oscar despite only won BAFTA because she was in a strong movie. Edited March 1 by Donquizote

Expand She didn't need 3, but it's also the least offensive of her acting wins. GG+BAFTA winner Brenda Blethyn and critic leader Sally Hawkins were robbed worse than anyone in the 2020 lineup. Frankly, McDormand was the worst 2017 nominee. And Fargo was a supporting performance.

Donquizote Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Ronan should have won for Brooklyn. Cant blame AMPAS at that time who felt like they need to urgently crown American newbie Lawson as their new queen. 1

Cant blame AMPAS at that time who felt like they need to urgently crown American newbie Lawson as their new queen. Expand I don't think it was so much about crowning Larson as it was about the weakness of the field and a desire to reward her film. Carol cratered as award season progressed. 0/5 at the Globes, 0/9 at CC and BAFTA, missed PGA and DGA, snubbed for Picture and Director at the Oscars. JLaw won the Comedy Globe for Joy but didn't even make the SAG lineup. (I wonder if BAFTA nominee Maggie Smith could have gotten the nomination if she'd won the Comedy Globe instead?) Rampling's only precursor was CC because the Globes and BAFTA actually had the balls not to fraud Mara and Vikander for some reason. Room and Brooklyn were roughly evenly matched up until Oscar nominations. Room made the Globe Drama Film lineup but missed PGA, Brooklyn made PGA but missed the Globes. They both had fair showings at CC. Tremblay coattailed at SAG. Brooklyn did well at BAFTA, even winning British Film. But Room got a shock Director nomination at the Oscars with only a Satellite nomination as a precursor, beating out Sir Ridley (every precursor), Todd Haynes (GG+CC+BAFTA), and Spielberg (CC+BAFTA). That established Room as a top 5 film in the race, and the only one in the Actress category. Plus Room won TIFF People's Choice, which is an extremely reliable predictor of industry reception / audience support. Since 2007, only The Fabelmans and some random Lebanese film won People's Choice and went on to win 0 Oscars.

Expand I dislike Larson as a person, and as an actress overall, but in this case she really deserved the Oscar, as her performance in The Room was flawless, I would even dare to say it would've been a much deserving BP winner that year as well.
