wantedyoutogrow Posted January 31 Posted January 31 between karla being the worst person on earth and fernanda's blackface scandal (also her being a misogynist) I think we have our best actress winner 5

kimberly Posted January 31 Posted January 31 A Complete Unknown is surging at the right moment and overperforming, so I'm inclined to think it's around #3-4 in terms of likely Best Picture winners. in an open field like this year's, that's a pretty good chance. Norton winning over Culkin is more unlikely, but things to consider: Culkin being away at rehearsal and unable to promote, A Real Pain missing BP, Norton having an "overdue" narrative on his fourth Oscar nomination
Broken Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Can someone email Rotten Tomatoes and tell them that racist movie Emilia Pérez (74%) has LOST its Certified Fresh status?

Life Savers Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Kieran's Oscar is already engraved. He's essentially sleepwalking to an Oscar. A Complete Unknown unfortunately could be safe enough to win BP, though. What a nothing burger winner that would be. Coda teas but somehow even more boring 2
LastKiss Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Karla getting cancelled right at the finale i could not believe it Emilia Perez going empty handed is now a posibility let's celebrate that
Alyssa Edwards Posted January 31 Posted January 31 A Complete Unknown is doing great... But over Wicked and The Brutalist ? I don't think.
Lovesong Posted January 31 Posted January 31 The way yall care about "Emilia Perez"debacle…if Academy received payola for it, then it's gonna win. If not, then not. I don't believe there is anything natural about love it receives. And Brazilians doing all this for "I'm still here", the way they desperate for attention and recognition, just like when Anitta loses another award they send threats and insults, as if she isn't talentless puppet who can't write or sing. Makes me laugh. 1 1

BP/BD nominees under 70 on IMDb, for the era since the PGA Awards started (1990): Power of the Dog, 89 MC Tree of Life, 85 MC Babe, 83 MC Bugsy, 80 MC Mank, 79 MC Emilia Perez, 71 MC Even if it weren't for Karla being exposed the way she has, this movie would be one of the oddest nominees from the standpoint of neither audiences nor critics showing excitement for it. Esp when the genre and main people attached aren't even Oscar faves.

Even I didn't know about that Carla controversy Yeah, people are overestimating the reach of the discourse on Zoe's and Fernanda's blackface beyond obscure tweets from stans, especially in an awards season with three major Oscar nominees who have a blackface controversy in their past (insane ). The media hasn't really picked up on it, apart from old news articles from 2016 for Zoe and a few articles that focused more on Fernanda's PR'd apology than on the actual issue. This feels like a non-issue for both in the race. On the other hand, Karla's tweet scandal definitely made its rounds beyond Film Twitter discourse and feels like a hot topic in major industry media, considering that companies and industry figures were asked to comment on it. People felt forward-thinking and progressive while voting for EP, but now the face of the movie campaign suddenly contradicts that feeling. Out of all the messy drama from this season, this is the one thing that genuinely feels like it could have a real impact. 6

Exactly, Emilia Perez has been a hot topic for weeks since people outside Europe can't comprehend the acclaim and having a new reason to hate on it with Karla's antics has definitely gained a lot of traction. I was boarding a plane yesterday and the guy in front of me was randomly discussing Karla's claims regarding Fernanda to the person next to him, as casually as if he had been talking about household names and some serious political issue. Let's just hope this clears Demi's path. 1
