EnigmaticAndroid Posted January 22 Posted January 22 (edited) A lot of movies just started coming near me or came far away enough for it to be a pain in the ass to see- and I was slammed over the holidays- so I've finally been starting to catch up on some of the players over the last few weeks. Anora: Spoiler 8.5/10 Really good, but not even close to being Baker's opus as is being thrown around. For me, it's not even his 2nd or 3rd best film. The 2nd act becomes redundant and the screenplay is overall the weakest aspect for me. With that said, there's still a lot to love. The entire cast is fabulous, Baker has such a strong control over the many tones and stylistic choices, and there's some really strong editing. I'd be cool with it winning Picture, but it definitely won't be my first choice. Emilia Perez: Spoiler 6.0/10 The first 45ish minutes are dynamite and then the film steadily loses its grasp, and literally and figuratively falls off a cliff in the 3rd act. I appreciate the core of what they were trying to do with Emilia, and using a cartel leader transitioning as a starting point to probe the human capacity to change is interesting, but there are so many missteps. When Karla goes into her Manitas voice later on... The highs are high and I think that it's actually very strong as an original musical, but it didn't work on the other levels it was trying to for me. Zoe should be sweeping. The insane outrage over all of it is still kinda hilarious to me, and partially comes off as in bad faith. The fact that people will call anything and everything camp but then be dumbfounded by something like La Vaginoplastia... open the schools. It should not be winning Best Picture, but I'm here for its success for the kiis and fumes. And its still worthwhile as a bold experiment. Maria: Spoiler 6.5/10 I haven't seen Jackie yet, but from Spencer and Maria, I get the sense that Larraín sees these women as wounded birds that only he can salvage. And in turn, I felt like both films victimize their protagonists to an extent that robs them of potential depth and stunts their arcs. And the focus of the film so squarely on the personality of a diva makes it feel like the film is missing its own point. All the style in the world can't fix something being built on a weak foundation. Steven Knight should be jailed for his "scripts". Jolie is really good and serves diva mug down, but its easy to see why she doesn't have passion. All gets to do for like 80% of the film is stare stoically, pop pills, and gesticulate. It's a deserving performance but I personally won't be broken up if/when she misses. The Room Next Door: Spoiler 6.5/10 Eh. Not bad, and the parts of the film that lean into the poeticness and Almodovar's more cerebral sensibilities really work and can be quite touching, but it felt like 70% of a film. Somewhat underbaked and the parts of the film that lean into the melodrama feel a bit clumsy. The flashbacks SENT me. This deserved to be a Production Design player though. Tm4074 Posted January 22 Posted January 22 My final predictions for the top 8 categories: Best Picture Conclave Emilia Perez The Brutalist Anora A Complete Unknown Wicked The Substance Dune: Part 2 A Real Pain Sing Sing (ALT: September 5) Best Director Brady Corbet, The Brutalist Sean Baker, Anora Jacques Audiard, Emila Perez Edward Berger, Conclave Coralie Fargeat, The Substance (ALT: James Mangold, A Complete Unknown) Best Actor Adrien Brody, The Brutalist Timothee Chalamet, A Complete Unknown Ralph Fiennes, Conclave Colman Domingo, Sing Sing Daniel Craig, Queer (ALT: Sebastian Stan, The Apprentice) Best Actress Demi Moore, The Substance Mikey Madison, Anora Cynthia Erivo, Wicked Karla Sofia Gascon, Emilia Perez Fernanda Torres, I'm Still Here (ALT: Pamela Anderson, The Last Showgirl) Best Supporting Actress Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Perez Ariana Grande, Wicked Isabella Rossellini, Conclave Jamie Lee Curtis, The Last Showgirl Felicity Jones, The Brutalist (ALT: Selena Gomez, Emilia Perez) Best Supporting Actor Kiernan Culkin, A Real Pain Yura Borisov, Anora Edward Norton, A Complete Unknown Guy Pearce, The Brutalist Jeremy Strong, The Apprentice (ALT: Clarence Maclin, Sing Sing) Original Screenplay Anora The Brutalist A Real Pain The Substance Challengers (ALT: September 5) Adapted Screenplay Conclave Emilia Perez Sing Sing Nickel Boys A Complete Unknown (ALT: Wicked) Pretty safe predictions. 5th slot in Supporting Actress could go to anyone in the top 10, tbh. I went with Jones but not confident at all with that pick. Gomez can easily coattail if the Academy go nuts for EP. I don't think EP will overperform at the Oscars like it did with the international awards bodies like GG and BAFTA since it isn't overperforming with American guilds, but still getting the expected nominations there. If Gomez gets in, EP is winning BP and it will complete the prophecy as the Crash of the 2020s lmao. Although at least Crash was received well by audiences at the time and was a box office hit. EP can't say the same, its appeal seems exclusive to the industry (and I liked the movie more than most did but I can tell it will age like milk). Personally rooting for Qualley to make it in that 5th slot but her SAG/BAFTA snub doesn't give me much confidence. She did make top 7 at BAFTA so if the passion for The Substance is there she can coattail, it's not over yet. 3 1

hausofdave Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Sing Sing failing to show at the Globes, SAG and PGA was bad. Might just be September 5 Even Women Talking scored the Ensemble nod
ctlp27 Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Finally, a movie where the hype doesn't oversell it. The Brutalist truly is magnificent. It's one of the best-paced movies I've seen in a long time. I am not a fan of the term "monumental" being used everywhere because the movie is so intimately focused. There's also been much conversation about the tight budget, yet it looks great. Most European or world cinema films cost just as much, and they've already shown that budget is one thing, but having a good director of photography and crew is enough to make a film look like a million bucks. I'm usually not a fan of Adrien Brody, but it's hard for me to think he doesn't totally deserve an Oscar for his performance. I wish Felicity Jones was part of the conversation. What a raw and unique performance she gave. The second act belongs to her, and a subtle force made me think of Amy Adams' turn in The Master. Brady Corbet definitely deserves to take home the Best Director award. I like Jacques Audiard, but EP is a mess even visually, and if Denis Villeneuve is snubbed, it would be a shame. All in all, The Brutalist is one of the best movies of the year, if not the best. This is what I wished *Oppenheimer* had been. It's a big, epic family drama from the '70s, made in a modern way. Before COVID, this would have reached the 70-100M$ domestic box office. 2

kandicha Posted January 22 Posted January 22 The letter the Academy sent out regarding no Best Original Song performances stated, "There is so much more in store, including powerful musical moments that connect film's rich history to its bold and inspiring future." The performance is really great and the film rips him to shreds at times. 2
