2024-2025 Awards Season

A small sample of the boost you get when you win a Golden Globe. Demi Moore, the newest frontrunner, is asking for Torres' number so they can chat. That's the rush of being crowned winner in a televised award filled with stars, everyone who didn't vote for her at SAG when deadline was due and the brits who left her out of the longlist now are picking up the screener from the pile to see what the fuzz is all about. You don't have that at the Indiana Film Critics Circle

The way people suddenly switching about Anora :bibliahh:

Still one of the best movies I've seen in 2024, haven't watched The Brutalist and Emilia Perez though

Demi BETTER win that Oscar i swear, i haven't rooted that hard for someone since Michelle Yeoh for EEAAO.

I want to make the distinction that it is highly divisive ONLINE. Nine out of every 10 reviews you read for EP will praise Sel and even the occasional review singles her out among the cast which is a feat. I think people are conflating what chronically online film twitter thinks with what general audiences and the industry thinks.

The general audience doesn't even know what Emilia Perez is, that movie was not successful at the box office at all :rip:

Trust me, there's no world in which Selena Gomez of all people is massively acclaimed as an actress by the general public :toofunny2:

With that speech, Demi is kinda on lock for the SAG. Her biggest obstacle are the BAFTAs but Michelle Yeoh did not need it and they both starred in genre films

Demi's winning the SAG, Mikey's winning the BAFTA and Fernanda's winning the Oscar. That's my bet and I'm locking it in.

I really hope Fernanda doesn't win it. I have nothing against her but i'm rooting so hard for Demi.

If Demi wins the SAG she has a VERY strong chance to win the Oscar. Unless there's a spoiler, which can always happen. I want to believe, especially after Michelle Yeoh's win :beatfreak:

Emilia Perez has been able to deflect a lot of criticism towards it as either rooted in transphobia or towards Selena's pocha accent when in reality it's just a deeply Eurocentric portrayal of Mexico that doesn't ultimately give a **** about Mexico or its hardships.

And the GLAAD op-ed slamming the entire trans storyline as forced, hackneyed, lacking any nuance, and bordering on egregious with its attempted redemption arc I completely agree with.

And Selena's stans can't stand to hear or read that if she didn't have time to prepare the accent or delivery that she shouldn't have been on the project to begin with. Just speaking for myself, it was a jarring distraction.

Having seen it, both the high levels of praise from critics and the visceral hatred online aren't warranted at all but it's a otherwise a meh film whose cultural blindspots wreck its entire premise and frankly, reasons for being made at all.

I'd say Zoe deserves the Oscar but its with such poor material I've been deeply conflicted about what's looking to be a sweep on lock.

It really is the Crash of this awards season. In a few years people will look back and wonder what the hell were they thinking. On top of the many problems this movie has there's also the fact that NOBODY has watched it in the real world, the GP literally has no idea what this movie even is :rip:

I'm so sick and tired of those unknown overhyped movies getting so many awards, it's one of the reasons why so few people take awards seriously these days, they're so out of touch with regular people. Naomi Scott gave an incredible performance in Smile 2 (a movie that was well received and commercially successful) but she's not even nominated for anything because it's a horror movie and awards are complete snubs when it comes to that, it drives me crazy :rip:

Emilia Perez getting more recogniton than The Substance really shows how much of a out of touch joke the whole thing is :toofunny3:

The level of sustained backlash is greater than anything put out since the 90's if not 80's. Only Crash surpasses it.

At least with Green Book people weren't invested enough in their anger towards it  to care :rip:

In an EP vs Brutalist showdown, the editing stat benefits EP because the latter missed both Eddie and BAFTA longlist. In that case only 4 Best Film winners at BAFTA in this century didn't get a Best Editing nom

Jharrell Jerome who has been in multiple projects since Moonlight in 2016? Hmmm...

The Brutalist (90 Metacritic) also has a runtime of 3h35m:hoetenks:. The only other movies that won Best Picture with a similar runtime in the past 30 years are:

Oppenheimer (3h) 90MC 975M $

The Return of The King (3h21m) 94MC 1.1B $

Titanic (3h14m) 75MC - 1.84B $

Braveheart (2h58m)68MC - 209M $

The Brutalist has scored so far around 1.1M$ dollars at the Box Office.

Emilia Perez has 71 on Metacritic and 78% audience score (Rotten Tomatoes: 76% Critics and 63% Audiences) comparable with Coda and The Green Book. For The Brutalist it's interesting the difference in Audience Score on MC (5.6) vs Rotten Tomates (88%). Do you guys know if there's been some "campaign"/ "internet trolls" attack against The Brutalist or anything similar?

Emilia Perez's numbers of mentions on the BAFTA long list has me worried TBH.

For SAG Ensemble - anyone beside Wicked has a chance to upset Emilia Perez? In my mind, most SAG voters (at least for wins) are "regular" actors, so maybe they won't be as bewitched by it?!

I'm curious what the stat is for GG Comedy + SAG Ensemble + BAFTA film is.

Exactly :rip:

The awards need some serious reform honestly. They can't keep being so out of touch with the public and expect to remain successful forever :rip:

What people need to understand is that these are industry awards (Not talking about the Globes). This is a chance for the film industry to recognize each other and what they think it's worthy of awards. This is not necessarily a representation of the public or what's more popular among the masses. That's what the People Choice Awards are for. Art is subjective and this is the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, they should recognize stellar, groundbreaking work. That sometimes doesn't align with public taste but that's not what they are here for.

Ultimately, whether people like it or not, the Oscars will continue to be relevant because A-listers themselves want that recognition and will continue to aim for it. Just because the chronically online don't like Emilia Perez, doesn't mean it's a bad movie.

And I believe the director's name is also engraved on the Oscar statue if the movie wins International Feature Film.

they're still not technically considered Oscar winners in the Academy's records which is absurd

Yeah, booking a Kimmel slot probably wasn't in the cards for her before that GG win. Sony Pictures is putting in the work!
