After presumably being pushed back due to the Hollywood strikes, True Detective returns in 2024 featuring 2 female leads for the first time in its four-season-run. This will also be the first season without creator Nic Pizzolatto's involvement.

From Inverse:

"Jodie Foster leads True Detective: Night Country as Liz Danvers, the chief of police of Ennis, Alaska, a small town embroiled in an ongoing battle between its Indigenous residents and the powerful mining company whose widespread pollution is an open secret. On the edge of this town sits an arctic research station where eight researchers suddenly all go missing one night. When the researchers are discovered frozen naked in the ice a few days later, the bizarre case’s connection to a missing Indigenous girl forces Danvers and her former partner Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) to reluctantly reunite to solve a years-old mystery."

For those new to True Detective, each season is self-contained, so there is no required viewing to understand any of the seasons. Each season is usually headed by 2 or 3 high profile stars in the eponymous detective roles. Tbh only S1 is worth your time; it is one of the best seasons of TV. It basically saw diminishing returns in succeeding seasons like AHS but maybe S4 will reverse this.

Season 1 Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson

"Season one focuses on Louisiana State Police homicide detectives Rustin "Rust" Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin "Marty" Hart (Harrelson), who investigated the murder of prostitute Dora Lange in 1995. Seventeen years later, they must revisit the investigation, along with several other unsolved crimes. During this time, Hart's infidelity threatens his marriage to Maggie (Monaghan), and Cohle struggles to cope with his troubled past. " x

Season 2 Starring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch

"The season's story takes place in California and follows the interweaving stories of officers from three cooperating police departments; when California Highway Patrol officer and war veteran Paul Woodrugh (Kitsch) discovers the body of corrupt city manager Ben Caspere on the side of a highway, Vinci Police Department detective Raymond "Ray" Velcoro (Farrell) and Ventura County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division Sergeant Antigone "Ani" Bezzerides (McAdams) are called to assist in the following investigation. Career criminal Francis "Frank" Semyon (Vaughn) attempts to legitimize his business with his wife Jordan (Reilly) by investing in a rail project overseen by Caspere, but loses his money when Caspere is killed, prompting him to start his own investigation." x

Season 3 Starring Mahershala Ali

The story takes place in the Ozarks over three decades, as partner detectives investigate a macabre crime involving two missing children. x

Season 2 is great once you understand all the components. I understand why people don't like it but I think it's so underrated.

Season 3 is probably my least favourite purely based on the ending or the conclusion to the mystery. It was pretty good on the lead up to it though from what I remember.

Can't wait for Season 4. Definitely looks interesting.

I'm so hyped for this.

I put this on randomly without having seen the previous True Detective seasons. Main attraction for me was two female protagonists at the helm. Loved it. Could not stop watching. The tone and the structure remind me of Mare of Easttown with Kate Winslet which was also fantastic.

With The Curse, Killers of the Flower Moon, and now this tackling secluded indigenous communities, Hollywood must be having a native infatuation.

I just saw Nic Pizzolatto is no longer involved with the show? Well no wonder it’s getting good reviews.

I really wanted to like this but I tapped out after the unbelievably bad CGI at the beginning of the first episode
