alfonso12
Oh I saw yesterday that the first Mickey was going to become public domain in January 1st because now it's almost 100 years old, that explains why they are releasing the trailer today. Â The movie looks bad though.
youreyesgocold
Dumb question but genuinely just curious - even though I understand Mickey is public domain today, obviously the film wasn’t filmed in the last 24 hours… so how does this not breach any licensing? With Taylor’s re-recordings she was contractually obligated to wait until the licenses expired or whatever to even go in the studio or lay down any instrumental production. Is the licensing for a character like Mickey different in that they only had to wait until today to show anything and even if it was created before today it’s fair game?  Does that also mean anything that was already being (illegally?) sold before today and infringed on the Mickey character is now immediately valid (and Disney can’t sue for the past sales anymore)?

It’s not the same situation. They are allowed to do recording but could not profit of it until today.  For your second question, Disney can still sue for and profits made before 1/1/24, as profits made at that time were made before this version of Mickey was public domain. But they cannot sue for any profit off of this version of Mickey going forward.
