They got lucky with their big breaks and then their labels funneled a bunch of money into their careers. It is not like they went from door to door trying to make it big. They all had their big break. Sure, money from family makes it easier, but none of those girls were independent artists who struggled to make it big lol. Once Rihanna connected with Jay Z, the rest was history. Same for Nicki with Wayne. There are probably better examples to use. Nevertheless, you are right with Taylor. She was very lucky to have grown up incredibly wealthy, and I do not know why fans of rich popstars pre-fame are so mad about people bringing it up lol. It is just a fact. I think it is unique with Taylor because without her parents wealth I think it is safe to say she would have never made it big due to the fact that she is not exactly super talented. She can write songs that appeal to a certain demo, but that demo would have never came across her without her daddy's money pushing her. Nicki was literally selling mixtapes out of her trunk in the 2000's well before she was signed to a label. Rihanna started off as a part of a girl group, and spent school breaks recording demos to be sent out to labels. And still, she was almost dropped after Music Of the Sun/A Girl Like Me, in favor of Teairra Mari, despite being connected to Jay Z already at that point. Both of those women grew up in volatile environments, with abusive Fathers that certainly did not fund their careers, and where domestic violence was a frequent occurrence. Not to mention, they were both black women trying to break into the industry which came with its own specific barriers. No comparison at all. Edited January 4 by ImsoLOUD 1
Scandalous Posted January 3 Posted January 3 (edited) he’s giving Dance Mom i think the most interesting part tho is how early they were banking on Tay having a huge career when she was still a CHILD, it’s one thing to become a popstar but she actually has the writing talent to back it up this many years later and there was no way to predict that back then Edited January 3 by Scandalous

Where in the email does it say he bought 30k copies of her album in black and white? Was the email not written before her album was out?

Pls She was in high school with her friends, it was just a thing for fun, it wasn't anything close to a career yet. "Girl group" my ass. Read 'The Song Machine'. Rihanna was discovered as a teenager because of a friend of a friend situation, and then had a dream career handed to her in a silver platter. She didn't have to learn to write or produce or hustle at all. All the hustling was done by Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers, the producer duo who found her and workshopped her, found songs for her or wrote/produced them, and then presented her to labels with whom they already had a relationship with. They got her in the room with Jay-Z. She just had to stand there and look pretty and "perform" (we've all seen how bad she was back then). Then she got signed on the spot. Then she was put into the major label machinery full steam ahead with a smash debut single that got a **** ton of radio payola. She never had to hustle, never had to struggle using her own money not knowing where her career would go. She was in the major label star fast-track since she was a teenager. Complete BS to compare her trajectory to Nicki who actually had to WORK for years and years and is still lying about her age because of it. Edited January 4 by Psyduck

Yes, this is why Rihanna, who had zero musical talent back then, got signed to a major label that invested millions into her career (which makes this Scott Swift email look like absolute peanuts) before having ever performed live outside of a high school talent show, and was handed a guaranteed-smash debut single that was pushed up the charts with radio payola and was then given more guaranteed-smash singles for her subsequent album. She never had to learn how to write a song or perform an instrument, and was basically tone-deaf as a live performer for this entire time. Pretty privilege personified. Whereas Taylor had to do a **** ton of legwork herself, perform everywhere she could from the county fair to the Honey Boo pagent, spend a ton of her own family's money, and after writing hundreds of songs all she could get signed to was an independent label, and it took her over a year after her first album came out to get a real hit record. All while writing impeccable country pop and mastering playing the guitar. How the sausage is made indeed. Edited January 4 by Psyduck

Complete BS to compare her trajectory to Nicki who actually had to WORK for years and years and is still lying about her age because of it. Rihanna had been singing since she was a child, according to her own Mother. Most of ATRL has lied about Nicki Minaj’s age more than she ever has. Why would Rihanna need to write or produce anything when her dream was to become a singer? Whom at the time, was covering ballads by 90’s R&B artists. And since you did so much research via “tHE soNg MAcHinE!!1!” I’m surprised that you somehow missed the part of Rihanna’s career where she had to fund her own music videos and promo, eventually going bankrupt. Or even the fact that she was nearly axed from her label just like Teairra Mari was, before GGGB. Most of the other hogwash you posted is just a matter of your opinion that one black woman is “just a pretty face” and the other one needs to lie about her age because… vibes I guess? Though I would imagine that if every pretty face could get an album like ANTi that spends 400 weeks on the BB200, it would probably happen a lot more than 4 times, right? And Nicki is still the biggest female rapper alive 15+ years into her career so I’d argue that age isn’t quite stopping anything either is it? Edited January 4 by ImsoLOUD 1

Mornings Posted January 4 Posted January 4 (edited) You guys arguing over who had their career most delicately handed to them. but I think the real problem is that Taylor really makes it seem like she was the bullied underdog and had to fight so hard, when she’s just like everyone else who has become a billionaire Edited January 4 by Mornings 1

Usually a label will be the ones doing all this. $200,000 to launch a new artist is nothing. This was to get her signed in the first place. Most artists do not have $200,000 prior to getting signed to spend on getting themselves signed in the first place.
