Counting down my 100 faves from the year. I've gotten through the few notable albums, so if I'm feeling lucky I'll have a c/d for that too.

I'm more unprepared and tardy than usual, but school and adulting will do that to ya! I'll get this done in 2 days or 2 weeks or never? We will see.

It’s very hard to keep up with the increasingly ambiguous category of alternative music. Sometimes you miss out on longtime veterans making massive comebacks to newcomers making waves. These were the ones I made my rounds to but didn’t make the cut. Shygirl and Pink have stronger efforts you’ll see later. After years of neglect, I finally got into Young Fathers and Bully, but I guess the work wasn’t strong enough. Don’t worry boy genius has an overflowing amount of love coming up.

Yves Tumor – “Echolalia”

Shygirl – “Playboy/Positions”

Young Fathers – “Rice”

Phoenix – “After Midnight (ft. Clairo)”

PinkPantheress – “Capable of love”

Neggy Gemmy & Sara Bonito – “Gemmy Juice”

Peggy Gou & Lenny Kravitz – “I Believe In Love Again”

Sufjan – “Will Anybody Ever Love Me?”

Bully – “All I Do”

Thundercat & Tame Impala – “No More Lies”

Little Dragon – “Frisco”

Hozier – “Francesca”

boygenius – “anti-curse”

Biig Piig – “Picking Up feat. Deb Never)”

Tkay Maidza – “Out of Luck (feat. Lola Zouai & Amber Mark)”

Big Thief – “Vampire Empire”

2023 proved to be a big year for R&B…or maybe just for SZA who dominated the year, proving R&B is just as much a vehicle for pop, Hip Hop and country. She of course made the Top 100! Artists such as Tinashe and The Weeknd just couldn’t top themselves after coming off of a strong 2022. Brent Faiyaz had a promising start with Wasteland, and I feel like I’m the only fan left after the sophomore slump Larger Than Life was released. FLO kept their name out there with their standalone power ballad “Losing You” and unreleased favorite “Control Freak.” Omar baited us with “3 Boys” – I won’t be forgiving him for not releasing a steamy video. But you know who had a surprisingly good year, musically, but their uterus got in the way? Ciara of course. Before there was “Everybody” (and after there was “Just Wanna Rock”) there was “BRB” and she also had two amazing collabs with Jackson Wang. Lastly, get into Rakiyah! If you're into low-fi alternative r&b similarly to old ABRA you'd live.

Tinashe – “Needs”

Sampha – “Only”

Brent Faiyaz – “Best Time”

Chloe – “Feel Me Cry”

The Weeknd – “Popular (feat. Playboi Carti & Madonna)”

Janelle Monae – “Paid in Pleasure”

FLO – “Losing You”

Rakiyah – “Lay U Down Again”

Victoria Monet – “How Does It Make You Feel”

Ciara – “BRB”

Jackson Wang & Ciara – “Slow”

Tinashe – “Uh Huh”

Majid Jordan – “Waiting For You (feat. Naomi Sharon)”

Omar Apollo – “3 Boys”

FLO – “Control Freak”

RAYE – “Worth It”

I would ruin everything if I told you where the placements of the ladies that put a stamp on pop in 2023. You’re going to have to wait and see where Taylor, Miley, Olvia, Sabrina and Tate landed…or if any made the cut. Maybe I’m not too happy with pop this year. Just look at the songs that didn’t make the top 100.

Kelly Clarkson was a front runner with “Mine” for majority of Q1-Q2, it felt like the 00s again. Speaking of 00s, Rebecca Black is one talented ass ***** and I mean that with a straight face in 2023. You know who else was slept on? Get into Adanna’s “ur a *****” it’s light, feminine and fun. Fun? Slayyyter gave us her version of The Fame/The Fame Monster this year. The disappointments: MUNA kept it safe with “One That Got Away” after one of the greatest singles runs of 2022. Ava Max didn’t blossom to be the superstar I know she could be.

Kelly Clarkson – “Mine”

BENNE – “Green Honda”

Rebecca Black – “Look At You”

Empress Of – “Kiss Me (feat. Rina Sawayama)”

Haliee Steinfeld – “SunKissing”

MUNA – “One That Got Away”

Adanna Duru – “ur a *****”

Addison Rae – “I Got It Bad”

COBRAH – “Feminine energy”

XG – “LEFT RIGHT REMIX (feat. Ciara & Jackson Wang)”

Ava Max – “One of Us”

Slayyyter – “I Love Hollywood!”

Marshmellow & Brent Faiyaz – “Fall In Love”

Aluna – “Beggin’”

Slayyyter – “Outta Time”

2023 was a unique year for hip-hop. Some artists took a hard look inwards while others chose to fixate on the glamour. In the end, neither side of the coin impressed me. Not the drill and not the conscious rap. But here’s a few that had me amongst the even FEWER that made the top 100. All there is to really say is that Cardi and Wayne got outdone by their respective collaborators (Megan and 2 Chainz ate) but I couldn't turn them off whenever they shuffled on. This year was also the year of the girls with no rap skills but Ice made bigger Bops – looking at you Ms. Coi and Ms. Red. This was also  the raunchiest year in Hip-Hop since 2003, “Peaches & Eggplants” is filthy AF but wooo this beat is one of the hardest instrumentals of the year. Type of song that would revive BET Uncut Award for sure.

Don Toliver – “Bus Stop (feat. Brent Faiyaz)”

Cardi – “Bongos (feat. Megan Thee Stallion)”

Sexxy Red – “SkeeYee”

Offset – “SAY MY GRACE (feat. Travis Scott)”

Young Nudy – “Peaches & Eggplants [Remix] (feat. Latto & Sexyy Red)”

2 Chainz & Lil Wayne – “Presha”

Travis Scott – “I KNOW ?”

Killer Mike – “Motherless”

Coi Leray – “Bops”

I'm glad to see some Biig Piig rep here, she is criminally underrated and I feel like her label has her in a bad place at the moment. I saw her twice last year and she even brought Deb Never out for that singles release. I think she has something new to bring to the table if she's given the opportunity, her old spanish and hip hop leaning stuff is stellar.

37. RAYE – “Five Star Hotels. (feat. Mahalia)”

Sensual and c*nt. Definitely Rated R coated.

3reNnWG.png

36. JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown – “Steppa Pig”

Such a distorted headrush of sounds, bass and great but random sample of N*SYNC’s “Gone”

4xxx7N5.png

35. Doja Cat – “Agora Hills”

You’re [now] a pop girl at heart, embrace it and STFU hun.

NtCe7fs.png

34. Little Simz – “Angel”

Simz rips the music industry apart over a bright soft production that throws you off on how she’s feeling.

p5hgj5k.png

33. Tinashe – “Tightrope”

Working to be one of her classics. Tinashe's signature whispery vocal harmonies over a drum & bass atmosphere. Chef’s kiss!

4IxLmnn.png

32. Megan Thee Stallion – “Cobra”

One of the boldest singles of her career. It’s personal but hard hitting and the rock inspired production is so unexpected. I love the whole concept of the cobra/snake, it’s very fitting to what she is going through in her personal life.  Hopefully she keeps her word with being ready to move on because we’re ready for her to make fun music again.

TcFSRy4.png

31. boygenius – “True Blue”

A beautiful track about a HEALTHY relationship in a world of toxicity. The harmonies and soaring instrumental are so crisp. One of those night ride type of songs.

fHiasrx.png

30. Victoria Monet – “Goodbye”

Excellent album closer of silky R&B and live-band arrangements to tie the bow on a 70s sounding album. She knows her ****! The outro is one of my favorite moments of 2023.

ju0Oa94.png

29. RAYE – “Flip A Switch.”

Normani – you messed up girl for giving this away. I wasn’t the biggest fan at first, but it grew on me tremendously. What a greasy bop!

28. Kelela – “Closure (feat. Rahrah Gabor)”

Such a great change of pace on the album. Kelela proves that every now and then she can deliver a traditional sounding R&B song with Hip-Hop influence.

whe9KjQ.png

27. FLO – “Fly Girl (feat. Missy Elliot)”

This had all the ingredients to be an urban top charter. It’s empowering but still girly, they nailed the interpolation of a classic hit that features the original artist, there’s a great dance break and amazing vocals as usual. I want justice for them!

LeFv4IY.png

26. Latto – “Put It On The Floor Again (feat. Cardi B)”

Cardi has delivered the best/most memorable female rap verse of the year, two years in a row [Tomorrow 2]. This is the hardest Hip-Hop beat of 2023. Latto create a pop culture moment too!

hM41fIP.png

25. Kylie Minogue – “Padam Padam”

The bathhouse gays won. I can’t deny this bop, but you’ll never catch me blasting it in public.

FQNrx6R.png

24. Victoria Monet – “On My Mama”

Never thought this would take off the way it did but I’m more than happy for Victoria. It’s nostalgic, great sampling and I appreciate the homage/flowers she gave artists of the 00s such as Ciara and Mya in the video as she showed of her great dance skills.

EHfDTEv.png

23. SZA – “Kill Bill”

Overplayed and not the best single from 'SOS' I feel, but I couldn’t help finding my way back to this because it’s undeniably catchy.

2GwBl3P.png

22. Kelela – “Raven”

The most euphoric and climatic moment of 2023. I love me a song that travels, takes you out of space and then fucks you up!

6uJ3LPJ.png

21. Yves Tumor – “Lovely Sewer”

Yves knows how to paint a perfect picture of the complexities of love and isolation in relationships. There’s poetic lyrics and an introspective tone built its '80s synthpop sound and female guest feature.

20. Chloe – “Body Do”

19. Billie Ellish – “What I Was Made For?”

18. PinkPantheress – “Boy’s a Liar / Pt. 2 (feat. Ice Spice)”

17. Blondshell – “Joiner”

16. Sabrina Carpenter – “Nonsense”

15. Amaarae – “Angels in Tibet”

14. ANOHNI & Antony + the Johnsons – “It Must Change.”

13. Jessie Ware – “Pearls”

12. Little Simz – “Gorilla”

11. Caroline Polachek – “Pretty In Possible”

10. SZA – “Snooze”

09. Yves Tumor – “In Spite of War”

08. Victoria Monet – “Alright”

07. Tyla – “Water”

06. RAYE – “Escapism. (feat. 070 Shake)”

05. SZA – “Ghost in the Machine (feat. Phoebe Bridges)”

04. Magdalena Bay – “Top Dog”

03. Kelela – “Sorbet”

02. Troye Sivan – “Rush”

01. Jessie Ware – “Freak Me Now”
