So now the *actual* issue is that the family say they believe he was shot by a friend and German police claim it was suicide - after initially denying his death completely.

They neither denied his death nor claimed it was suicide. Their statement from yesterday says they have no knowledge of a murder (this could have maybe been worded better), while the article from Tuesday says it was going to be investigated whether is was an accident or possibly a suicide attempt.

We also don’t know when he passed away. He was alive as of Wednesday when the article was posted.

Multiple German sites and sources reporting it was a suicide are saying that they're getting this information today directly from Hamburg police and as having confirmed him dying on Friday (which would line up with his family taking to social media on Saturday with their concerns).

While Hamburg police's initial tweet from Saturday broadly paints "reports" regarding  Barakat as "fake news" - as opposed to reporting that Barakat did indeed suffer a gun shot wound and publicly linking the story spreading on Jordan media with the anonymous report from Wednesday, and saying they're openly investigating what happened.

The issue of the Hamburg police's social media posts go far beyond just an issue of being poorly worded.

It reads clear as an attempt to downplay the systematic reality of anti-Palestinian racism in Germany and what would be justified fears of a family of an international Palestinian student living in Europe when told he has died with little information (see: the rush of users arguing his family's concerns were conspiracies), let alone when given the excuse of the Christmas holiday for why information being given to them is staggered and delayed.
