GreatestLoveofAll Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 (edited) So this was supposed to be up since like last week or whenever the 'Best Of' section reopened. Yet finals swept in and while i feel confident in the quality of my grades this semester, I was still too wrapped up in last minute things to even try and make this. Also I got sick and it's lingering so there's that But enough of that! Welcomeeee, all my ATRL lovelies, to the 2023 edition of GreatestLoveofAll's music recap! Since i started this in 2020 (missing 2021 completely which to this day still irks me), I have done a recap of two lists- songs released this year (with very few exceptions) that are my favorites and another with songs I discovered this year and why they are important to me! this year was a big year in gospel for me but I discovered plenty of old classics and some songs that ATRL stanned for back when they just came out! From pop to soul, from gospel to rock, my music taste all have a similarity to them and when you see the lists I got, you'll definetly agree. Im no graphic queen so the reveals will be very simple, but I will do my best to make the commentary worth your while- I cant wait to share what I loved this year with you all. First update- in 9 hours! Songs I Discovered '23 & Songs of the Year: Class of 2023 Edited December 19, 2023 by GreatestLoveofAll adding again 4x
GreatestLoveofAll Posted December 14, 2023 Author Posted December 14, 2023 Ohhhh-kay so I lied. I intended to come back and make the first update around 9am EST but I forgot I had work later in the morning and now im finally settled and ready. Plus it was being weird and not letting me post the very few oics I do have so I was nervous about that. Anyways without further ado, lets start Songs I Discovered '23 California Dreamin'- The Mamas & the Papas- 1965 This is a huge song apparently but I never heard it in full till this year and fr? I been missing out. The harmonies are epic, the women hold down the fort while the men take the top harmony and they meet together at the end of the chorus in an ear-pleasing way. I can definitely see why this has so much streams and is such a staple of 60s pop because it frankly sounds so fresh and unique even among the music of its time. The highlight definetley has to be the "I've been for a walk" lyric- the harmonyyyy is unparalleled. Because of You- Ne-Yo- 2007 Didn't really know how problematic he was until after I started loving this song but I dont regret stanning it since its one of the best RnB of its time and ne yo isnt too bad a singer if im honest. I love the vivid lyricism tbh. But besides that forget him. One of Us- Joan Osborne- 1995 I actually cant remember where I found this classic though I have a vivid memory of playing it over and over again at work so Im assuming that’s where i found it out. A song with content that would have all the elders in my family frowning, I was immediately drawn by the honesty in the lyrics and the imagination Joan has with this isnt even to far fetch to really think about. Chances are God isnt lonely, but the song is more thought provoking beyond the concept of deities. .... Songs of the Year: Class of 2023 HM: The entirity of the Barbie soundtrack could have found a place on this list. If I was ranking albums this year, I definitly would have been keeping it at #1- it has heartfelt moments, fun bops and just a variety of styles and themes all splashed within that ties amazingly with the movie- even the songs not featured. the songs from it that make an appearance are just the best of the best. 35. Mother- Meghan Trainor What can I say? I love me a bop and while I roll my eyes a bit at the adpotion of the term 'mother' by a cis-straight white woman in this context, I cant help but agree that she embodies the whole top tier woman persona. "Made You Look" was released too late to make my 2022 list as far as I can remember but Meghan always drops bops and whether it smashed or not, the quality is there for me! 34. Hey Blondie- Dominic Fike My disclaimer could wait to be posted clearly cause here comes one of the top tier Barbie tracks right now! I always seemed drawn to this song probably because after all the songs with bright, booming, domineering production littered all over the album, the gentle take on this is a completely different spin but somewhat welcoming. Its one of the two slower songs from the soundtrack on here (y'all know the other one) and easily one of the best crafted songs that wasnt showcased in the movie. 33. What's The Time Where You Are- Troye Sivan Its still taking me a while to get used to the album as a whole. I wasnt disappointed as there is a good album with a prominent message underneath the constant buzz of the production, but it didnt click with me as easily as Bloom did. Yet while I sat with the album for the first few days after its release, this song kept coming back to me. To me it symbolized the growth of perspective and life that Troye has gone through since 2018 and as with most of his music, it means something deeper coming from someone you can relate to on a personal level. A lot of us are still in the far away lover phase whether we want to be or not and while its not like Troye shied away from this kind of topic before, I have a feeling it will linger on even stronger in his upcoming material. 32. Lil Boo Thang- Paul Russell The biggest issue I have with carefree bops like this one are the weak lyrics, but honestly there really isnt much room to expand when the song is just a cute little declaration of attraction. It serves its summery bop purpose and has been a joy to listen to on my drives to work. Perched to see if the sound he has here will carry on to his next release!

TalkThatRihanna Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 California Dreaming and Neyo WTTWYA is def one of the highlights on the Troye alberm 1
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 One of Us is such a classic like the chorus is definitely one of most remember hooks in the 90s Hey Blondie and WTTWYA are also really good too The Barbie soundtrack was one of my most played album this year like maybe i'm still in Barbie hive until now nnn 1
GreatestLoveofAll Posted December 14, 2023 Author Posted December 14, 2023 Ok so hopefully now with my semester over, I can get into the habit of posting maybe twice a day? We'll see how it goes but here's the next update! Songs I Discovered '23 Dog Days Are Over- Florence + the Machine (2008) should I get into more florence? Alternative is so hard for me to get into but Florence has such a power to her sound. Also I had no idea they began so early- I was under the impression they began in like 2013 or something. I love the rhythmic progression of the song and I need to keep reminding myself to give this style of music more of a chance as time and time again im discovering the massive gems that are hidden. Make Your Own Kind of Music- "Mama" Cass Elliot (1969) AHHHH one of my faves this year. Its only flaw is that its so short. I heard this on several tiktok videos and a few trailers this year (including Barbie!)- as if it spoke to several directors this year. I dont know, but the late Cass Elliot created happiness and self-fulfillment in a song and no matter what, listening to this all too short always brings a smile to my face and in my head, it did the same for Cass each time she sang it. Its simple yet perfect 60s pop music. “Cause to do your thing is the hardest thing to do”. Baby, Dont Change Your Mind- Gladys Knight and the Pips (1977) 70s essential for me, Gladys and her boys never fail to make me smile with their harmonies and effortless ability to wring emotions out of mere words. I was fairly shocked to see this wasnt one of their massive crossover hits as it has the same pop appeal yet soulful delivery of their biggest. Either way just even more proof of their legendary sound. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World- Prince (1994) Just when I thought I heard all of this guys pop/easier songs, this gem came up. I cant even remember where I discovered this but glad it gave him a mid 90s hit. To this day i’ll never NOT be in awe of the sheer vocal range this man possessed. I wonder if he had a vocal coach because to be able to reach to the top of your falsetto and then drop to comfortable, resonant lows in the same 4-minute song? Extraordinary. Songs of the Year: Class of 2023 31. Speed Drive- Charlie XCX As a massive fan of pop music, I feel a little out of the loop on here having not listened to a Charlie XCX album in full. Her career and sound as never really caught my attention enough to really explore what she has but maybe that can change- after all I felt the same way about Marina and the Diamonds and in 2022 i began to discover some of 2010s best pop music through her material. I love the sampling here and how it doesnt aim to be one of those songs where its a bop but the lyrics hold a slightly deeper meaning (like another song on this list does, but actually does a good job at). Its just carefree, trashy Valley girl pop music and I stan. 30. Honey- Samia Its crazy researching these artists cause you really never know what you'll find. Apparently Samia is daughter of Kathy Najimy- one of the prime supporting actresses in the classic Sister Act movie. That has absolutely nothing to do with this song, and it hardly has anything to do with Samia but its just a cute fact. Anyways I think I was listening to Spotify's weekly New Releases playlist and then I heard this little tune. I love her light voice and the production of the chorus is reminenscent of 00s movie soundtracks from Disney and it just seems to fit just well for me. The album as a whole was interesting too and I have a feeling it might be just what some of y'all like. 29. Angel- PinkPantheress Pls someone tell me whether her new album has songs like this on it. I usually dont care for the sound and aesthetic of someone like Pink, but its ever since the release of the boys a liar remix and this Barbie gem, I've been sort of vibing with her. I love the unique production and how her airy, girly voice seems to fall in place with each line. I'm willing to give Heaven Knows a spin if she offers bops like this on it. It reminds me a lot of Taylor's "Your Song" with the violin addition in the background. 28. Peaches- Jack Black Ok, yes, yes its so out of place here. But here me out- even though its been used for comedy there is a reason it went viral. Jack Black gives Browser a sort of humanity that shouldnt work for singing yet it somehow does. The potential this had had it been a longer song tbh. I promise tho, the rest of the list wont have curveballs like this again. I think.

TalkThatRihanna Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 Get into Shake It Out by Florence, her best song Angel is such a good pick! Most of her album sounds like it, get into it sis
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 DDAO is one of the songs that makes me want to discover more indie-type songs. Maybe because i followed more mainstream songs back then, but this song didn't sound like any other popular songs at the time, which really made me awe lmao Speed Drive and Angel you get it About the PinkPanthress album, for me most of the songs don't sound like Angel, but the album's main focus is drum & bass but also has influences from 2000s rock, UK garage, electropop, and even a little bit of dancehall. I personally love it lol LMAO i also include Peaches song my list 1
GreatestLoveofAll Posted December 15, 2023 Author Posted December 15, 2023 Alright before I go off to sleep, here's another set! Songs I Discovered '23 The Vow- RuthAnne (James Everingham Orchestra Mix) (2018) What a haunting, gorgeous piece of work. Ballads reworked with orchestral production are some of my favorites (some Aretha songs come to mind) and many of them fit so well I dont even realized that they arent in original form- like this one. one of my friends played this while we were on a drive somewhere and I was actually taken back that such a sweeping arrangement was on her songs and not mine. Its not a complex song but its endearing and the vocalist has a sweet and gliding voice that makes it a lovely listen overall. I love its title as well. God Bless the Child- Billie Holiday (1942) I originally knew this from Whitney’s 1997 DC concert and so how lovely that it came on a random play list I was listening to. Billie’s delicate, weathered voice gives this cautionary tale of a tune the exact feel it should have. Im not sure if its the original or not, but Billie has done it better than I’ve ever heard. And what makes it even more unique- she wrote this! Truly cant wait to see what other songs of her's I discover along the way. No Debes Jugar (1993) there was a point where I discovered a new Selena song every month last year. She has so many great songs and this one is no different. I wish I knew Spanish fluently but then again if I did then I'd probably be missing the notes she hits anyways (she is an epic vocalist). RIP legend. Wuthering Heights- Kate Bush (1978) Excellent, excellent song. Deserved a million Grammys. Miles better than Running Up that Hill. Are all her songs this epic?!?! the guitar outro might be my favorite part too. What a piece of ART. Addicted to Love (Live in Camden Palace) (1988) Thinking of legendary black female musical geniuses, Tina took a number one hit by some white man and turned it into a stadium anthem that even tho it wasnt a hit, remains a true demonstration of what she can do. I discovered this in a tribute video by one of my favorite content creators on YT called Black Music Archive. He broke down how this performance/song is a prime example of Tina’s best and the kinda music she loved and excelled in the most. She deserved the moniker “Queen of Rock n Roll” more than any one and if you give this a spin you’ll get it. Tina had unparalleled energy, stage presence and sophistication that made her just a joy to listen and watch. Her legacy will never be topped or overlooked or forgotten simply because she's the best. ... Songs of the Year: Class of 2023 27. Choose Your Fighter- Ava Max Veryyy similar to her previous hits but the familiarity is what kept me bopping. Ava dominates in the girl boss section of pop music and I love the lyrics too and the whole video game reference. Im gonna give Diamonds and Dancefloors a listen now. 26. Got Me Started- Troye Sivan I fought a lottt with the placement of this song. It started off as my favorite off the album, but as I will discuss in full a few songs down, I switched pretty last minute. Either way though, its a solid song right here. The chorus is such a highlight and its a sound he def should build even more on in the future. 25. Single Soon- Selena Gomez I'll never understand the hate that this song gets. Its easily one of my favorite pop songs of the year and she seems to be just having fun and living in the moment- at least in this song she is. Idk what she doing these days... but i still love the song. if only she pushed it and she'd have another easy top 10 on her hands. 24. Rush- Troye Sivan This song and the next are soooo very close in terms of how much I like them and quality. The other song won out of loyalty to a pop legend, but frankly you could switch their ranking on any day and I would probably be okay with it. I really started diving into them both when they were both up for the same category. I will be honest, "Rush" didnt click with me when i first heard it. I mulled over the sparse lyrics and the production and relatively ignore it until the album dropped and I finally realized that this was one of the best songs of the year. Had it come out even early it would have merited top 20. 23. Padam Padam- Kylie Minogue Like I said, pretty neck and neck with the "Rush" song but i gave it the edge cause its Kylie and cause the utter domination it's had on gays since its release. Like, there is no way Miss Minogue didnt know what she was doing when dropped this mid summer and just weeks before Pride. Its such a silly song in so many ways but I'm glad we all can acknowledge and still stan. Honorable mention/shoutout to "Tension"- had I had a longer list it definetly would have made it.

Mr. Loco Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 I didn't care much about Troye's music until this year, in 2023 he has been releasing bop after bop Rush is my favorite
Remmy Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Songs I Discovered '23~ Because of You & One of Us are cute. Dog Days Are Over is one of the few I care about from Florence. Agree with TTR saying to also peek at Shake It Out! Class of 2023~ Mother starting off the list It's interesting. Hey Blondie is actually my favorite on the Barbie OST, which I never ever ever expected. Just so breezy and chill. What's the Time yesss Speed Drive is a bop & slight grower. I love Samia Her debut album was better than 'Honey', but the title track is a good one. Peaches Can't take that song seriously. Angel is enjoyable. Oh, Choose Your Fighter + Single Soon could've 10000000% been left off the list Double Troye in the latest update
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Wuthering Heights and the live version of Addicted to Love are classics Single Soon is cute for as throwaway single, so i'm sure she has better songs for the album Rush and Padam2x having a mother off at Grammy next year But watch David Guetta and his wack ass songs winning the award smh
ATRL Moderator khalyan Posted December 15, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted December 15, 2023 Definitely get more into Florence! Drumming Song is my favorite from the Lungs album that Dog Days is on, but that whole album is truly a work of art Love to see all the love for the Barbie Soundtrack. It's been a minute since a soundtrack really served the way Barbie did this year!

GreatestLoveofAll Posted December 16, 2023 Author Posted December 16, 2023 I was supposed to do a lot yesterday but I was so busy and the work made me tired so nothing was really achieved. So here's the fourth update and I will come back and reply to all the other rankings tonight when I get back home! Songs I Discovered '23 Rata De Dos Patas- Paquita la del Barrio I figure not a single person will know this actually and its funny as started as a joke among my coworkers and I. Calling each other a “rata de dos patas” and other Spanish insults was funny but when they told me this was an actual song I was floored. Not only cause I wasnt aware but also cause when listening to the full song, Paquitta seems to put in as much vileness, ugliness and disgust she can muster for this man and all i can do is genuinely love this song for how real it is and how unbridled the lyrical content. Paired up with the regional Mexican music its just a treat for sure. Paquita is a bit of a mess, but the song is fun. Guess Who I Saw Today- Samara Joy (2021) I really cant get into jazz and it took me a while to fully listen to Joy’s Grammy winning album Linger Awhile, but wow isnt she a talent? She’s maybe a year or two older than me but I cant even believe it when she starts to sing. With a thick, heavy and warm tone and with an emotional depth that im sure will only get better the older she gets and she does this classic justice, already a great storyteller. Nancy would be proud I believe. I am quite excited for her next release. Duduke (French Version)- Simi Was at a little party at an acquaintance and this came on and whew i was hooked. I think she’s singing to her daughter here and its just adorable. Reminds me of the phineas and ferb song “Gitchee Gitche Goo” oddly. Both the English and French versions are good, but it sounds more endearing in the latter. Mon Soleil- Princess Lover Coming from a French-speaking family it would be easy to think I would have known this song. Yet being a religious child, songs like these would evade me until now. Princess sings with the same relaxed strength that many female singers from my mother’s home country do and its just a bop all around. When it gets to end she really has me doing my two step to say the least. Oh and yeah, got this from TikTok lmaoo the first one on this list. Copines- Aya Nakamura whew THIISSSSSS BOP defined my year. I had made a friend on Tinder and he introduced me to this hit and honestly im mad I didnt discover it earlier. The attitude (its sung in French and only makes it sassier), the confidence and just how she rides the beat- perfect summer jam. This is the FOURTH non- English song this year- giving global taste ... Songs of the Year: Class of 2023 22. Pink- Lizzo Legal drama aside and how I even feel about it, Lizzo brought her signature mixture of energy, spunk and versatilty to the opener of the best soundtrack this year. I was looking at Remmy's list the other day and I saw that they had "Pink" as their 10th best album opener of the year and I couldnt agree more with that assessment. A good album opener often has the hardest job of the whole album and is a song that either must be created or chosen with care. After all what it gives will be the standard for which the whole album is judged and received and Lizzo incorporated exactly how the world of Barbie both as an album and as a world would feel and is show in the movie. Have yet to see if Lizzo will appear on this list in the future, but for now she's in the spotlight for me still. 21. American Town- Ed Sheeran I know its common place to drag Ed and ignore most male artists on here and you can bet I will still be partcipating in giggles on them all still, but I must admit that this album as whole wasnt the worst and "American Town" especially as a lead was far better release than "Eyes Closed" for sure. Its not territory that Ed hasnt covered in his other hit songs before, but the warm hug on a chilly November morning while a hot cup of pumpkin flavored coffee sits near by vibe that he was aiming for defiently lands and I find myself rather grateful for it. Shoutout to his ode to his homeland "England"- I love the melody of that chorus. 20. What Was I Made For?- Billie Eilish If it was more my taste, I would have had this top five. But if you want to even attempt to look at music objectively (which of course you largely cant), its not hard to see why the song was the standout track of the movie, why it was so organically successful and why its being set up tp sweep some Grammys. Billie's emotional pen and borderline failing vocal delivery snatches you from the musical euphoria that is music and the production of the movie to a somber, shockingly deep reflection that you didnt even think the movie would touch on- that you didnt think about at all. As fine as any Billie song she's crafted, hundreds of kudos to this track. 19. Kill Bill- SZA The single artwork for this feels so weird like it matches the song but... idk. Anyways, I know that R&B isnt something I give much attention to unless its the more auntie sounding stuff or something I'm familiar with and I definitely dont care much for modern R&B. Yet how a miss would I be NOT to include Kill Bill on my list? SZA paints a deranged story in such a easy, smooth way that I can attest to several times not even realizing what im saying so nonchalantly until the song is practically over. Its twisted, pop and dark and melodic and was the perfect storm for 2023. 18. vampire- Olivia Rodrigo Speaking of single covers, love how this is giving Adele's 30 (my #1 album of 2021!) album cover realness. Love the influence. Musically, the comparisons stop as "vampire" may start like some Adele songs but it progresses into a raging, bitter spitfire of a drag to an older man who took advantage of her and made her a person she didnt recognize. The album as a whole (possibly my #2 this year) expands on the negative and rather dark emotions that Olivia deals with and its just amazing to see the consistency and growth. A better lead than "driver's license" but maybe a bit less memorable. 17. Flowers- Miley Cyrus Yeah I didnt care for this song when it first came out. The random way it blew up, the way it dominated the world and wasnt even the best song of her career in the last decade. I still think Plastic Hearts deserved the success and recognition of this era, but pushing my envious feelings away, Miley pulled off the biggest comeback of the 2020s by simply being herself and telling her truth like only she knows how. the song is fairly minimalistic and the lyrics arent as biting as some would like to act, but its a great pop song and I root for it in every moment it gets to win. Plus, the longer its been out, i've actually grown to love it. "Yeah i can love me better than... YOU CAAANNN!"

Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 I totally forgot that Ed Sheeran released 2 albums this year His peak is totally over now Pink is such a great opener, even in the movie. It fits so well within context of the film and "Bad Day" version still cracks me up Flowers and Kill Bill are such suprise hit songs for me especially the former because Miley wasn't that big and Plastic Heart's singles were all moderate hits (before ALY went viral lol)
