Ewan Chaos Posted December 20, 2023 Author Posted December 20, 2023 I promise I will reply to yall's lists too! I'm just so damn busy and the fact I can even get an update out is a MIRACLE. Spoiler On 12/15/2023 at 10:29 AM, Album Leak said: I still need to really sit down and listen to blómi (the album) in it's entirety. The title track is fine, the sax definitely elevates it. Fever Ray was not a serve for me, though I haven't liked any of their albums since their debut album (which was insane). There's something about late 2000s/early 2010s indie pop/electronic and alternative music that was in a league of it's own. A lot of albums I liked from that era haven't been surpassed by the artists since then. Kikuo's album sounds pretty eclectic and fun but I have a pretty high barrier of entry for liking vocaloid songs to the point I'd put them in any of my playlists. The vocaloid stuff really needs to elevate the song, otherwise you just end wishing DAMN, just give me the instrumental version or DAMN, wish there was an actual singer singing this! If you liked Susanne's last album, you should like this one! Okay I kinda agree about the Kikuo album... though the weird vocals On 12/15/2023 at 7:26 PM, JGibson said: Mind Your Business + BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53 Period! I wish Over got more than just a HM. Dream On (Country Girl) is such a gem One That Got Away is also a gem A Reckoning was a cute album, people dragged it too much. Tension is very nice. Blomi, Softscars and Zach I still need to listen to Laufey's record. Blomi, the song, making it Hoping to see Alyosha getting some love too. Radical Romantics was awful (as is her entire discography x). Happy to see Did You Know and Jaguar II, I was especially shooketh by the latter! Happy to see Everything Harmony too Alison slaying too I like Alyosha too! The Fever Ray drags nnnnnnnnnnnn the way that was me pre this album. But Jonny, 3D Country, Water Made Us and The Love Invention are the opposite of it cause these album are just THAT good I know MYCELiUM will grow on you! I have a feeling! I need to check out the AMAKA EP; I can tell it's gonna be my vibe I just don't know why I haven't gotten around it yet Well thank you for getting me and mx into her!!! Oh yeah get into that AMAKA EP RIGHT NAUUWWWWWWW I know you'll stan. Songs - #75-51 #75: Olivia Rodrigo | Bad Idea, Right? At the very least, she releases one BANGER on her albums that do somewhat well (this & G4U). #74: Spanish Love Songs | Re-Emerging Signs of the Apocalypse They leaned more on heartland rock for this album than traditional emo rock, but when you get songs like this, you can't be mad about it. #73: Disclosure | Simply Won't Do A very fun, shuffling little garage track that I enjoy. #72: Chromeo | (I Don't Need A) New Girl I like this just a touch more than the La Roux collab that also came out this year. #71: The Japanese House | Sad to Breathe 2016 Spotify-core, and I mean that in the most complementary way possible. #70: Victoria Monet | Good Bye Tough to pick between this and a few other album cuts… but this is a perfect finale to the album (and Jaguar "series") so I had to pick it! #69: Jake Shears | Too Much Music BOP! #68: JMSN | Feel Like a Woman His pattern of "one or two incredible songs, decent album" continues. I'm also pretending he's in his gay oats with this song even though he's clearly not nn. #67: Tensnake, Jessy Lanza | Keep It Secret Major bop alert! #66: Indigo De Souza | All of This Will End The halfway point in the song makes me tear up. #65: Alison Goldfrapp | So Hard So Hot BOP. #64: Magdalena Bay | Top Dog Am... top... daeg... #63: Sufjan Stevens | So You Are Tired Yeah Sufjan… I'm fuckin EXHAUSTED. #62: Jamila Woods | Boomerang Gavin Turek's background vocals are lowkey my favorite part of this song, but it's a great track too. #61: KNOWER | Nightmare She spilled on the chorus. #60: Roosevelt | Rising FIFA horizon, FIFA horizon, FIFA horizon #59: Yeule | Sulky Baby This is their best song! When they say "doobadoobadooba" they ate that. #58: Mitski | The Frost The classic "I assume this is most people's least favorite song but it's my favorite" song on my list! #57: Zach Bryan, The War and Treaty | Hey Driver Hey driver, you can drop me OOOOOOOOFF anywhere! #56: BAMBII | WICKED GYAL GAG! #55: NewJeans | New Jeans Erika de Casier supremacy! [2] #54: Arlo Parks | Weightless When this came out, I just knew that her sophomore would be leagues above her debut album. #53: Nourished by Time | Daddy Let me just copy/paste Pitchfork's write-up for this song because it's perfect. #52: Tove Lo | I Like U She should have added this & Borderline and yeeted the Rachel Platten power ballad and Call On Me to turn Dirt Femme from a 3.5 to a 4/5. #51: Peggy Gou | (It Goes Like) Nanana Why is this titled as "Edit" she knows she's not gonna make an album ever nsidhsiodhsi. Kinda shook that this became a borderline hit in the US and an actual hit everywhere else. Albums - #35-21 #35: V V Brown | Am I British Yet? It's interesting that this is basically an album that's half music and half spoken word interludes. It does feel a bit too long (maybe just because I'm not huge on spoken word stuff), but it's still a great release! She's so underrated! #34: Ava Max | Diamonds & Dancefloors The improvement from that dreadful debut album, faceless queen of faceless pop! #33: Jake Shears | Last Man Dancing Unexpectedly pretty fantastic dancey record. I really enjoyed a few songs from his first solo record, but this blows it out of the park. #32: Emily King | Special Occasion I'm not feeling this as much as her previous albums because I would have loved if she leaned into the art pop of Scenery than the acoustic of her... acoustic album, but it's still great! Especially the first half. #31: Sufjan Stevens | Javelin Gorgeous record. I wish him nothing but the best in such a difficult year. #30: Jayda G | Guy This is kind of like a more accessible version of her debut album, but that's what I kinda love about this. I played a lot of these tracks over the summer. #29: Young Fathers | Heavy Heavy This album just hits and I can't quite say why. #28: Alex Anwandter | El diablo en el cuerpo Gay king! If I'm honest, this is just a few songs too long, and the first 10 songs are the clear highlight, but I'm quite impressed! #27: Samantha Urbani | Showing Up This really is Cupid Deluxe (Samantha's Version) and I mean that as a massive complement. Those last songs especially, FUUUUUUUCK yes. #26: Hannah Diamond | Perfect Picture Incredible fusion of the ironic and sincere. And most of the songs just BOP, so there's that. A worthy album for one of PC Music's final album releases. #25: Everything but the Girl | Fuse Great comeback record! I like that they did the same "upbeat-slow-upbeat-slow" song pattern that they did on Temperamental, but I gotta say the slow songs on here are some of my favorites surprisingly! #24: George Clanton | Ooh Rap I Ya This album is basically #ThankYouHatchie the album to me. Even though the album sometimes veers to the "it's too samey" territory, it's my favorite record of George's. tf does the title mean though. #23: KNOWER | Knower Forever A fantastic return for the zany duo who I love. It's not quite on the level of Life (could have used maybe a bit more quirk that Life has), and half of the songs are basically copy/paste Louis Cole songs, but it's still a great record. #22: Mitski | The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We I don't agree with people constantly bashing Laurel Hell since I really like it, but I DO agree that this is better and a much more consistent release. The slight Americana vibes are just lovely. #21: Slayyyter | STARFUCKER Basically, she's in her "expensive" sounding music era, and I'm here for it.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 20, 2023 Author Posted December 20, 2023 Let me just keep this going and ideally finish tomorrow! Songs - #50-26 #50: 100 gecs | Dumbest Girl Alive Perfect intro song for the album. #49: Liv.e | Reset! This song is like… Mary J Blige if she was an alt-R&B artist. I think the "doo-doo" bit with the split second of drum-n-bass is my favorite bit. #48: Blue Hawaii | Summer for the Loners WHERE'S THE FUCKIN ALBUM?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! #47: Dua Lipa | Houdini The outro is clearly the best part. She has better saved for the album I'm sure, but I hope this eventually smashes. #46: PinkPantheress | The Aisle It's the thing that makes me smile #45: Everything Everything | Cold Reactor This album is already shaping up to be incredible based on this song. #44: Beyonce | My House This would obviously be higher if it had come out earlier. It was SUCH a fun feeling not knowing this was coming and hearing it for the first time in the credits in the theater. The second half OOOOOOOOO. #43: AMAKA | Unfamiliar The best songs produced by Kaytranada are the ones that you THINK he produced them, but it's not overly obvious. And she is giving so much sex on this song, LOVE! #42: The Lemon Twigs | What You Were Doing Great song. #41: Aluna, MK | Kiss It Better Apparently this came out last year, but I only listened to Mine O Mine so I get to add this to my list teehee #40: Brandy Clark | All Over Again I didn't like the album as much as her 2020 one, but this song is kinda her best. Super catchy. #39: Jayda G | Heads or Tails I love the chorus and her pulling lyrics from recordings of her late dad. #38: The Weeknd, Playboi Carti, Madonna | Popular I know for the longest time "Abel-Lana" was the match made in heaven… I think "Abel-Madonna" is the match made in heaven instead. She's amazing on this track. #37: Torren Foot, Azealia Banks | New Bottega This release was SO funny. The endless teasing, the signing to a label to release this, a MV being shot apparently, her feuding with and then being dropped by the same label, the song randomly getting released but not even under her own name, then being removed and reuploaded LMAO. Guess she still has a little talent left. #36: Troye Sivan | Rush I wish the rest of the album was as good as this & the other first 3 songs on the album… Either way, someone post the video of the "the trans girls are serving down well yes!" video dancing to this song. #35: Kylie Minogue | Padam Padam Padam! I'd have loved the whole Tension album to have been like this song/the title track, but oh well. #34: V V Brown | Twisted Easily the best on the album. Good way of incorporating the political lyrics and keeping the song melodic. Awesome outro too. #33: George Clanton | I Been Young This is an impressively nostalgic song. #32: Samantha Urbani | More Than a Feeling One of the best outros of the year. #31: Charli XCX | Speed Drive It was tough to pick between this, Angel and Dance the Night for my Barbie pick, but when an artist can pull off creative sampling (of TWO songs even!) in a musical landscape filled with shitty Coi Leray samples, I have to give props. #30: Emily King | Special Occasion A classic Emily King song. Sounds lovely in the morning when you're getting ready, but with enough life to grip you when you're listening - and with a great outro to boot. #29: Geese | I See Myself Country soul excellence, and one of the most fun choruses of the year. #28: DJ Seinfeld, Confidence Man | Now U Do Doing the dance moves for this song at their concert recently… peak moment of life. #27: Jessy Lanza | Marathon "I don't think you're very funny -giggle- sorry!" one of the best moments of the year. #26: Everything But the Girl | When You Mess Up Usually I pick the bops over their slow songs as my favorite, but the Midna's Lament piano just makes me come back to this song too often to NOT make this my top pick by them. Albums - #20-11 #20: Amaarae | Fountain Baby Great and fun album! Felt like most of the second half was better than the first half, but WHEW Co-Star and Princess Going Digital... so good. #19: Romy | Mid Air I'm not sure if I like this more than Jamie's solo record, but this is a fantastic homage record to the 90s/00s (Sonique, for example) that I'm sure will be incredibly underrated! #18: Debby Friday | Good Luck An impressive debut album that is filled with back-to-back bops. I'm keeping my eye on her. #17: Club Eat | Start This is one of the most fun albums of the year. The Shoes songstress lives ON in this album! #16: Tennis | Pollen This is kinda Swimmer 2.0, but it's great. I continue to say that the band got good when she jacked Kath Day-Knight's style and this shows that it's continuing. #15: Hayden Casey | Asphodel I didn't expect him to release an album better than Calamities but WOW I just LOVE this. The influences being worn on his sleeve (R&B legends like Brandy in Warnings, alt-R&B legends like Kelela in dmg // ctrl) are probably what set this apart, and beyond, Calamities. Great record. #14: Nuovo Testamento | Love Lines madonnas, you legend thank you for sharing this amazing 80s album tribute. It's fantastic. #13: Kali Uchis | Red Moon in Venus I prefer the diverse Isolation to this album, but it's still so good. I love that she leaned on funk so much on these songs. And with a new Spanish album on the way? Hard working mother! #12: Jessy Lanza | Love Hallucination I love that she consistently releases great, easy-to-listen-to albums. This one might be her best. #11: Christine and the Queens | Paranoïa, Angels, True Love This is a MASSIVE album. Experiencing a handful of these tracks live a few months prior to this coming out helped me digest it a bit, but even now I feel like I'll mostly be listening to this album in parts rather than in full. As much as I love this & Redcar, I'd love for him to go back to the more accessible sounds of Chris/LVN. 1
Renzo_ Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 #50: 100 gecs | Dumbest Girl Alive #45: Everything Everything | Cold Reactor #42: The Lemon Twigs | What You Were Doing #26: Everything But the Girl | When You Mess Up These ones!
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 21, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted December 21, 2023 oh wow extremely nice to see Good Bye by Victoria here, stunning song BIR is great So Hard So Hot Sulky Baby...oh a gem! I am happy EBTG did not continue on the same path as Temperamental. While that is a great album, to me it is far from being their best. Quite overrated tbh (and people like to dismiss their stunning music pre-Amplified Heart). Houdini, Padam Padam and My House When You Mess Up Romy and Debby Friday both took me surprise, very good records! Kali's album was great Christine's was also nice, but it's a bit of a tiresome listening experience
Alldeezy Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Bad Idea Right + I like U + Houdini + Rush + Speed Drive
Album Leak Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Rush and Padam Padam deserved. Romy and Amaarae as well. Gotta have to listen to Magdalena Bay's recent releases. Haven't check them since the 2019/2020, and I was just lukewarm to them then. Top Dog sounds pretty cool though.
TRF. Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 The Amaarae, Christine and the Queens, Jessy Lanza and Debby Friday albums and you're so right about the Club Eat album giving Shoes not that that's a bad thing it's lowkey iconique!
Ewan Chaos Posted December 22, 2023 Author Posted December 22, 2023 As Yaeji said, "let's get it done" shall we? I'll definitely reply to comments before the end of the year & your Best Ofs too I PROMMY Songs - #25-1 #25: Lana Del Rey | A&W This song is kinda the culmination of her entire career, huh? #24: Kali Uchis | Endlessly Karli... Darkcharld... #23: Young Fathers | Geronimo #22: Ava Max | Sleepwalker I think the singles from last year are PROBABLY the best songs, but the instrumental bridge on this one goes off so much to probably make this my favorite track. #21: Tennis | Let's Make a Mistake Tonight An early-year favorite. #20: Kimbra | New Habit I'm surprised how much I like this song tbh, for a while Replay! was the only song I cared much for from her new album, but I think this grew on me when I saw it live. #19: Paramore | Running Out of Time Even though Figure 8 and You First are amazing too, I think the singles were my favorite songs from TIW. #18: Yves Tumor | Ebony Eye Yves's best songs are the ones that are menacing and evil. #17: Yaeji | For Granted A little obvious to pick the album's lead single as my favorite track, but it just has everything for me. Her cute little vocals, the cute beginning that shuffles more and more as the song continues, the BREAKDOWN. #16: Club Eat | Clumsy My favorite songs from albums like this that are totally tongue and cheeky goofy are the ones that have just enough sincerity in them to make me feel something. When they said "… It's not funny." I'm like OOP #15: Romy | Loveher The most beautiful sapphic love song I've heard in a long time. I get emotional every time I hear it. #14: Hannah Diamond | Flashback Again, this is an album filled with sugar so the melancholic painful songs like this hit the most. The final "… a lot" omfg so emotional. #13: Slayyyter | Girl Like Me I think her cvnty songs are usually her best (Daddy AF, Purr, etc.), but Girl Like Me is just too good. And the way she washed that artist that rhymes with Bin Wetrats in making music that the **** is pining for someone to possibly make her his one and only. #12: Tinashe | Tightrope Tinashe x Machinedrum are a match made in heaven! #11: Amaarae | Princess Going Digital It's whatever you want... #10: Christine and the Queens, 070 Shake | True Love The song on my list that makes me want to cry the most. #9: Kelela | Contact Such a classy, sleek, sexy, fun song. The video is so… gratifying too. I need to find a night to get ready to go out and spam this song for. #8: Alan Palomo | The Return of Mickey Milan I adore when musicians wear costumes to talk about themselves. It's also a massive bop. #7: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit | King of Oklahoma The most belt-able chorus of the year and best/depressing lyrics of the year. God this song is phenomenal. #6: Carly Rae Jepsen | Psychedelic Switch The Daft Punk/Kylie LEAPT out! I love her so much! #5: ABRA | FKA Mess I'm mad this isn't getting as much love as her collab song from 2021! This is 100% her best song. #4: Debby Friday, Unas | I Got It Good God, this song just goes OFF. I was shook the first time I heard it. #3: Jessie Ware | That! Feels Good! It was SOOOO hard to pick a single Jessie song, but the fact that I continue to just sing "that… feels good… do it again" all the time… it has to be this pick. Incredible track. #2: Caroline Polachek | Blood and Butter The Imogen Heap LEAPT out! (I've never heard an Imogen Heap song) It's really hard to snub this as my #1 pick because it's my most-listened to song of the year and, as someone born in Scotland, I adore things that make me think of my roots like the bagpipe solo. #1: Confidence Man, Daniel Avery | On & On (Again) This is one of the best house songs of all time and potentially my favorite Confidence Man song. The chorus makes me go off every time, but especially the end of the second chorus with the synth stabs and then the last chorus just makes me want to jump out of my seat any time I'm listening to this. A very, very worthy #1 pick. Albums - #10-1 #10: PinkPantheress | Heaven Knows I've always thought she was a good artist, but this really blew me out of the water and proves that she's "one to watch" from this new crop of artists. #9: Tinashe | BB/ANG3L She absolutely ATE this, and interestingly I think it being this short (and still treated as an ALBUM) works in its favor. Almost like a mixtape. I'm very excited for @DUL7/D3V1L #8: 100 gecs | 10,000 gecs After the messy rollout, I really wasn't expecting too much with this release. But WOW, it's even better and fresher than their debut album. SUPER replay value as well. Good for them! #7: Alan Palomo | World of Hassle Here's my token male in my top 10 yearly lists, but I don't wanna diminish the quality of this record by just saying that! Alan may have dropped the Neon Indian moniker, but he absolutely has not lost any of the quality he had when making his previous records. This style of synthpop just TICKLES my brain. #6: Paramore | This Is Why I knew I wouldn't like this as much as After Laughter, but it's still fantastic! I think the combination of "returning to their punk roots" but also "evolving into territory more becoming of dance-punk" suits them a lot. #5: Yaeji | With a Hammer I'm not mad that it took so long for her to get her debut out if the quality was going to be THIS good. When people are whining that artists aren't doing anything new anymore, I will point them to this record. #4: Kelela | Raven The concept of a seamless album works incredibly well for Kelela. I was surprised that this one wasn't as much of a grower as Take Me Apart, and I actually don't care too much for ambient music, so the fact that I enjoyed this so much is a totally pleasant surprise. #3: Carly Rae Jepsen | The Loveliest Time This truly stands on its own outside of The Loneliest Time, so I'm glad that she doesn't FULLY consider it a Side B, but also has the strong connection to TLT. I actually kinda can't believe how much I like this album; really scratches the "slight deviation from her usual music" edge that we've all been wanting from Carly for a while. #2: Caroline Polachek | Desire, I Want to Turn Into You I must admit I'm still a little bothered she released like... all of the best songs before the album came out as singles. But who cares; this is easily her best work (both solo and Chairlift). #1: Jessie Ware | That! Feels Good! I've loved her since 2011 but I've been seriously enamored with her since What's Your Pleasure. This album is another homerun that I blasted all year long and will continue to spam into life! Experiencing this album live really hammered down how magnificent this record is. 1
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 23, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted December 23, 2023 was kinda expecting Debby to snatch #1 after last night's ATRL Critics' Circle A&W, Running Out of Time are stunning Loveher is beautiful Contact and Psychedelic Switch That! Feels Good!...now that's a classic! Blood & Butter slaying idk what y'all see in PinkPantheress This Is Why being so high, nice to see it. Raven is incredible. TLT is...cute Desire and TFG, masterpieces
MP2K Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 Missed a lot so there's too much to comment on. But you know I use Some good surprises though- glad Jessy Lanza came back and Young Fathers snatched me a bit and I wasn't expecting to give them a chance after all these years

K$Ellie Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 oops i would LOVE the top 5 if we remove Jessie and bump Paramore up T!FG! was just cute to me Caroline snapped so hard but the lies in the writeup, I Believe and Pretty In Possible are the best songs I agree about Pinkpantheress, her debut was cute but this album wowed me and had a lot of longevity for me! love the picks for Slayyyter, Kelela, Amaarae and Carly love the Paramore, Debby, Tinashe and Caroline songs too

TheWayWeWere Posted December 25, 2023 Posted December 25, 2023 Get Him Back > Bad Idea Right Victoria'a success this year is so exciting! So Hard So Hot that last minute alone!! I Like U is so addictive but I hate how deluxe tracks sh!ts all over most of the album tracks Houdini extended > Houdini My House is freaking amazing I need her to release Act II next Popular is flawless, one of the best M' songs in YEARS. I really love that quiet r&b sound on her, both Crave and this are one of her best songs in the last decade Padam Speed Drive deserved Oscar nom over Dance the Night A&W True Love is my least favorite single from PATL, but okay Contact A BAWP Psychedelic Switch one of the best songs in her career Blood and Butter VV Brown nice to see her on your list! I'm not a fan of spoken word intros, but music is amazing on this album Fuse I wish they'd go in more upbeat sound like the lead single, but I love that comeback overall The Land Omg, finally some love for Lauren Hell I can't believe people actually hating on that album Fountain Baby is my #1 discovery of the year Red Moon best Kali's album PATL nice to see love to it! I feel like this album is so underrated BB/ANG3L could've been better if it was longer This Is Why is too short too tbh I feel like it needed like 3-4 more songs to be stellar TOP 4 is FREAKING IMMACULATE Jessie's #1 is so deserving, and I'm glad you're a fan of hers since 2011, just like me I'm so happy she finally found her audience
