MLD's Best of 2023 (Songs 40-31) + Best of my 20s (170-161)

Posted (edited)

Hi everyone! We made it to the end of 2023. It was an interesting year for me personally. After a pretty devastating 2022 with the loss of my Dad and my Dog, and going through some very bad depression and mental health struggles on top of that, 2023 was a much better year. It was quiet socially, but I was mentally intact and I learned to enjoy my own company and still survive and be strong. This was also the year of my ATRL comeback, with me participating in multiple games during the second half of the year, and I hit a milestone 15 year anniversary this November. I will be celebrating the best that 2023 had to offer me and other things.

Things to expect:

Top Songs of 2023
Top Youtubers of 2023

Top ATRL Games of 2023
And other thing
s

I have also reached the end of my 20s, with my 30th birthday happening next month. In honor of that, I will also be posting these lists:

Top Songs of my 20s

Top Music Videos of my 20s
Top Albums of my 20s

And in honor of my 15 years, I'll be celebrating all my favorite members over the years, games and memories.

We will be starting tomorrow. :)

MLD's Best of 2023

Top Songs 100 - 91

100. Post Malone - Mourning

Posty has grown on me over the years. It was a bit of a shame that this song didn't perform as well as Chemical. But oh well, still thought this was a bop and while it might be at the very bottom of my list, it was still deserving of being here for the brief moment that I bopped to this.

99. Nicki Minaj - Last Time I Saw You

Nicki had several decent songs this year. This song ranks lowest on my list because while I do like the poppier side of her, her bangers with Ice Spice just stuck with me a lot more this year.

98. Paramore - The News

I was really happy that we got a new Paramore album this year. I will say that while this song is good, the heavy subject matter kept me from listening to it more. But it's still a great song!

97. Delta Goodrem - Back To Your Heart

I've supported Delta Goodrem for at least a decade. She has a great voice and never disappoints. This song is no exception. While it's clearly inspired by Tina Turner's The Best, Delta carries that blueprint pretty well. Hopefully we get more new music from her in 2024.

96. P!nk - When I Get There

I'll be honest, I wasn't the biggest fan of P!nk's new album this year. BUT, there were a few good gems, three of which made my year-end. This is the first of the three. Her album and this song came out about 5 to 6 months after my own Dad passed away so I related a lot to this song. It was a great tribute to her Dad and if the subject matter wasn't so heavy for me (especially with my relation to it) it would have placed higher.

95. Taylor Swift - Suburban Legends

You can expect a lot of Taylor tracks from me on this list. That's why I'm ok with some of her songs ranking this low. The lowest cut being this vault track from 1989 TV. This song is cute, just not as interesting as the other vault tracks.

94. Paramore - C'est Comme Ca

The other promo track from Paramore's release. I liked it, but not as much as some of the songs on the album like You First. Still a bop though when I'm in the right mood

93. Dua Lipa - Houdini

This recently released lead is still growing on me. But it's a bop and had it been released earlier in the year it would have been a lot higher.

92. The Weeknd & Ariana Grande - Die For You

Ariana made the song better and she's the only reason this made it.

91. Taylor Swift - Now That We Don't Talk

We are now saying goodbye to the other half of my bottom two to the 1989 vault tracks. Now That We Don't Talk is cute. I just like the other three vault tracks a lot more.

not big on these Taylor tracks but im sure ill see a few of my faves pop in at some point since she dropped a lot this year

Last Time I Saw You is super pretty. I LOVE C'est Comme Ca, get why it was divisive but **** it goes off. Houdini kinda grew on me then grew off then grew on again? Idk

Houdini, C'est Comme Ça & Now That We Don't Talk :clap3:

Suburban Legends is easily my least favorite 1989 vault track... but she still pops off (mostly because of the bridge).

Maybe Houdini is not that bad after all..

I keep telling myself to check out Delta's music. Back in 2020 I unintentionally only listened to Australian artists (Savage Garden / Darren, Natalie, Kylie) so maybe I finally will.

LTISY, The News, Houdini and Die For You remix are such bops :jonny:

I feel like Mourning is his last chance for to gain his old fans who like his rap back but they already abandon him for good so.. :deadbanana4: But i'm curious for his country album though nn

I forgot Delta released new music this year :deadbanana4: Let me listen real quick

Last Time I Saw You was cute also, should’ve been a moderate hit

MLD's Best of my 20s: 2014 - 2023

Songs 200 - 191

As previously stated, I have reached the end of my 20s. It has been a wild ride the past decade. My taste has remained mostly pop, but my taste in artists has definitely evolved somewhat over the years, while some artists I have remained VERY loyal to. For this list, I will be counting down my 200 favorite songs from this past decade, and some of the songs from my best of 2023 list will also be appearing here. I hope you guys enjoy this special retrospective list so here is the first update.

200. Rachel Platten - Fight Song (2015)

I remember when this song was smashing I felt like I was the only person on ATRL who loved it. Literally EVERYONE was seething at this woman getting a hit and hating it and I just didn't understand why. It was the first time I really saw people on here mad that a woman was succeeding even though this site is known for supporting women, but I guess since she wasn't an MPG or whatever you want to call it, that's why she got the hate. Regardless, I felt the song was empowering back then and while I've cooled on the song a bit in the years since, "And I don't really care if nobody elses believes because I still got a lot of fight left in me" alone is one of the most empowering pairs of lyrics I've heard this decade and therefore the song still manages to make this special retrospective list. Rachel to this day has remained a ray of sunshine if you follow her instagram as well.

199. Iggy Azalea f. Charli XCX - Fancy (2014)

Man 2014 almost feels like an eternity ago at this point. But Iggy's one and only entry on this list is the song that I still on occasion bop to. I had a lot of fun listening to this back then and while Iggy's career didn't last much longer beyond that particular year I'm glad we got this bop and this Clueless tribute out of it.

198. Nicki Minaj - Super Freaky Girl (2022)

I'll be honest, you won't be seeing a lot of songs from 2022 on this list. But the ones that do make it are bops, and Nicki served one last year with this. I loved the spelling type of chorus and I loved the video to this as well. Just a carefree pop rap song that Nicki struck gold with.

197. 5 Seconds of Summer - Youngblood (2018)

During my early to mid 20s, I absolutely enjoyed listening to 5SOS. They have the honor of having two entries on this list, so we will be getting to their other entry a bit later. We start with Youngblood, their biggest US hit and technically my most played song by them. The song is just very catchy and I like the melancholy tone of this as well. I've also cooled on this a bit since release, but I still love the song and if it comes on at work I'm happy with it.

196. Olivia Rodrigo - drivers license (2021)

Olivia had quite a last couple years didn't she? Well, you'll be seeing her a bit on my main 2023 list and she'll be here a few times as well. Drivers License was a song that grew on me very fast and while I didn't really care for the breakup drama at the time, I liked the song enough to play it a lot during 2021. I've definitely cooled on this a bit as I think Olivia's music has gotten better in the years since and GUTS proved that pretty well. But this won't be her last entry on the list.

195. Panic! At the Disco - High Hopes (2018)

Here is an example of a song that I love, but it got too big for me to really enjoy listening to on my own free will. I absolutely adored this song when it came out and in the year that it was charting. It's a song that inspires you and lifts you up and I love that Brendon got success with this. But I do feel like his music took a nose dive in quality after this song blew up and this became too much of an HAC staple to put this higher on my list. Still, I love this song, I love the inspiration it gives off and I will say that I listen to older Panic! songs like Northern Downpour or Miss Jackson more than this these days so I think I still won and so did Brendon.

194. Maddie & Tae - Die From a Broken Heart (2020)

2020 was a year where I really needed to keep myself occupied with as many songs as possible to not go insane from the pandemic. Ironically, a LOT of great songs came out during that year so honestly, if 2020 has a lot of songs from that year here, I really can't get mad at that. This song is a great example of that. One of the few country entries on this list, this hit is just a great example of how not all country songs and artists are bad. Maddie & Tae are just pleasant to listen to here and I've watched several of their Youtube videos as well. They seem like the absolute sweetest ladies. Glad we got a good country hit out of them and glad their music was there during the pandemic.

193. Elle King - Ex's & Oh's (2015)

I have some good memories associated with this song. I really liked this song first off, and then my Mom got into it, so it was a song both of us could enjoy together. I ended up buying Elle's album for her for her birthday, and we both ended up being able to enjoy the album too. Elle has a lot of talent and I still enjoy her music to this day.

192. Mike Posner - I Took a Pill In Ibiza (SeeB Remix) [2016]

Oh, if only I was 22 again. The hits from that year don't hold as much of a mark with me as the years surrounding it, but the hits that do stick definitely stick with me. I Took a Pill In Ibiza being one of them. Mike really showed us how vulnerable he could get while also serving us a bop. And honestly, the older I have gotten, the more I understand the depression behind the lyrics here and how the remix honestly works because we tend to drown our depression out with fun memories and good times. Outstanding song from 2016 hands down.

191. Ellie Goulding - Love Me Like You Do (2015)

This is another song that I really loved when it came out but it became too much of a HAC staple for me to enjoy it as much. This was during a time that Ellie still had some ethereal euphoric magic to her music, even in a song like this that was a love song for a sex movie. While this does transport me back to being 21 years old, that magic hits harder with other songs from that year that will be much higher up on the list. Still, this was Ellie before her label ruined her.

Glad to hear your year was better, MLD! Happy to see The News and C'est Comme Ca (very underrated tbh) here. Houdini :clap3: Hope to see some of Taylor's better vault tracks in the next updates (*cough* Timeless *cough*)

the 20s update, well, interesting choices :thing: Ellie is probably the only good one my fave :clap3:

Fight Song might be the most annoying song ever exist but it will remember as one of mainstream hit songs from the mid-2010s music that people will be talk about from 20 years from now i fear

Speaking of mid-2010s, LMLTD is still one of my favorite songs of that decades. I had so many memories with that song that'll never forget OMG :jonny:

the two Paramore songs are major bops :clap3: they delivered another great album

Suburban Legends is meh but NTWDT is a banger
