Lots of bad stuff here.

terf parade isn’t that bad but she deserved the dragging so I’ll allow it.

Janelle is more disappointing than *bad* but drag anyway.

Gloria, howl, nessa, Etc, turrible!

10 Billlie - Eunoia

billlie-the-billage-of-perception-chapter-three-Cover-Art.jpg

The best K-Pop isn't always something inventive like last year's "Antifragile." In a scene that falls victim to chasing trends beyond recompense, it's almost more impressive to draw upon them in a way that feels new. "Eunoia," penned by mother Youha, is a unique take on the overused Nu-Disco/Synthpop trend of the 2020s. It's more fresh, more funky, maintaining and recontextualizing Billlie's signature quirkiness. Flip flop!

9 Wednesday - Chosen to Deserve

wednesday-rat-saw-god-Cover-Art.jpg

More to come in my album writeup :eli: but I'm so glad Wednesday garnered mass critical attention this year. MJ Lenderman HAS to be the greatest guitarist of the decade so far, and although I'm not exactly versed in music theory I can tell it sounds pretty ******* good. This is the Bad Romance/Teenage Dream/whatever of Indie Rock, an absolute banger that takes from the greatest sounds of country and rock - new and old, from Lucinda Williams to Wilco to Indigo de Souza, fully emblematic of Wednesday as a band. The lyrics have their typical flair of celebrating the shitty things about yourself too, which is always fun.

8 Hemlocke Springs - Stranger Danger

hemlocke-springs-stranger-danger-Cover-Art.png

Hemlocke Springs is one of the most exciting pop newcomers, combining genre and sound and BLAHHHH UGH I'm pissed she scrapped this song altogether. IT'S SO GOOD. It's 80s and 00s and punky and synthy and poppy and stupid and catchy it's perfect. But she doesn't deserve my writeup!!!!

7 Hannah Diamond - Poster Girl

hannah-diamond-poster-girl-Cover-Art.jpg

Another one I would rather examine in my album writeup so I'll just say, this is the best song PC Music has put out since 2017. Bless Hannah Diamond those other flops at the label are unworthy even tho her pretentious response to the Zara Larsson beef sentttt me.

6 Pinkpantheress - Angel

pinkpantheress-angel-Cover-Art.jpg

Easily the best Barbie track. While others were giving reductive autopilot versions of their old material, Pinkpantheress churned out something much more novel and memorable. It's simple but genre-defying, embodying the attempted (alleged, even) concepts of Barbie in a perfect manner both sonically and lyrically. Meaning it's too good for the movie. The fact it got a total of five seconds there?? Greta Gerwig see you in hell.

5 Le Sserafim - Eve, Psyche, and the Bluebeard’s Wife

le-sserafim-%EC%9D%B4%EB%B8%8C-%ED%94%84%EC%8B%9C%EC%BC%80-%EA%B7%B8%EB%A6%AC%EA%B3%A0-%ED%91%B8%EB%A5%B8-%EC%88%98%EC%97%BC%EC%9D%98-%EC%95%84%EB%82%B4-eve-psyche-and-the-bluebeards-wife-Cover-Art.jpg

K-SOTY. The apex of clubby Dance-Pop, a genius piece of music. No words. They can milk it eternally for all I care.

4 Neggy Gemmy - Seeing Stars

neggy-gemmy-seeing-stars-Cover-Art.jpg

Panned her album and the George Clanton association #JusticeForCarolineLoveglow but she struck gold here. Thanks Frost Children I guess? Deliciously blending icy dance and breakbeats with dreamy alt rock, she takes on an entirely different persona from the Magdalena Bay wannabeisms of her other music. Sour candy for your ears. Really hope this is the direction she goes in for her next album!

3 Snow Strippers - Under Your Spell

snow-strippers-under-your-spell-dont-you-feel-Cover-Art.jpg

Snow Strippers have elevated themselves beyond Crystal Castles tribute act over time for me. They've potentially even surpassed the classic duo, albeit they lack the more dynamic range (could they pull off a Doe Deer or Child I Will Hurt You? Probably not). "Under Your Spell" is the closest two nerds from Michigan have ever gotten to Diva House, melding Euro-Trance with Witch House for the ultimate punch. I love a good "oh oh" chant, I do. IT WAS FOR THE CLUBS!!!!

2 Slayyyter - My Body

slayyyter-starfucker-Cover-Art.jpg

She is a master of pop music and anyone who doesn't believe it needs to OPEN THEIR EYES!! She ended all "Main Pop Girls" sorry, it takes such a dedicated passion for trashy electropop and euphoric dance-pop to create what she does in general and especially here. In a way, it's the ultimate sentimentality, thirsting for connection through energetic synth stabs and riding a nostalgic high to get there. The chorus hits like a truck then the bridge arrives to confirm it killed you.

1 Yeule - Sulky Baby

yeule-sulky-baby-Cover-Art.jpg

When I first heard this it was through a lo-fi performance recording hidden in the depths of YouTube, and I was still taken aback. I adored Glitch Princess, but "Don't Be So Hard On Your Own Beauty" was the obvious highlight and I wanted more in that vein. Finally Yeule was giving me exactly that. A nostalgic dreamscape of indie and pop, electronic and rock, all wrapped in a warm psychedelic blanket. "Sulky Baby" is nearly five minutes long with only one proper verse, but doesn't overstay its welcome a single second. The melody sticks in your head and it does. not. leave. I debated between more than a few - five, exactly - songs from Softscars as my choice for SOTY (spoiler, a bit?) but this one takes the cake. Where it all began, and even in its simplicity, still blesses my ears with each listen. I read their interviews throughout the album cycle and how the primary goal of this track was capturing a feeling of nostalgia, an incredibly difficult task especially given most of their fans, including me, were probably not born during the 90s renaissance of Alt Rock. So although most of their newest songs call back to 90s Dream Pop with an incorporation of modern Glitch Pop, a welcome combo for sure, this is timeless. It's everything I needed. Another SOTY in the basket for parent.

Spoiler

96 Nicki Minaj - My Life

Unexpected pick!! I'll have to revisit this album sometimes obviously, but I'm glad that in spite of... what it was, you found a song to place

95 Fifty Fifty - Barbie Dreams

Period :let2: not on my list but definitely my fave of theirs this year

90 will.i.am - Mind Your Business

:bibliahh:the future of AI is here.

87 Adanna Duru - Ur a *****

Afrobeats bop

85 Faye Webster - But Not Kiss

very excited for this project. she's someone who I listen to in full rather than singles so I'll be playing this more next year

76 Taylor Swift - Hits Different

yasssssss

68 Rachel Chinouriri - The Hills

noise rock queen, AOTY is coming

66 Kiss of Life - Sugarcoat

yassssss [2] fantastic song, probably the most honest interpretation of R&B in popular K-Pop I've heard? I like that she manages to maintain a sense of originality while pulling from a pretty standard 90s R&B style. It feels fresh somehow

62 Babebee - Alone

61 Jane Remover - Fling

bop

59 Sexyy Red - Sexyy Walk

sexyy red.

52 Cydnee With a C - Cry Alone

very fun discovery, indie artists

50 Ice Spice - Bikini Bottom

PERIDSLGJHKJ !!!!!!

44 tripleS - Complexity

it still boggles my mind that they had 4 eps and all of them were excellent?

40 Baby Storme - This City is a Graveyard

dancing in the target rn

32 Chrissy Chlapecka - Affection

queen

27 Tinashe - Gravity

mega serve. my only complaint with this project was that it should've been a full album. love how she keeps evolving

25 Lexie Liu - Dance Dance

24 Hannah Jadagu - What You Did

23 fromis_9 - Attitude

22 Feeble Little Horse - Heavy Water

bops, classics, etc

18 Shygirl - Crush

a staple.

16 NewJeans - Super Shy

omg so low! but either way, incredible

15 Addison Rae - Nothing On (But the Radio)

FINALLY ITS OFFICIALLY OUT!!

14 Aespa - Salty and Sweet

13 SZA - Kill Bill

mega classics

11 Olivia Rodrigo - Pretty Isn’t Pretty

SO high??? YESSS, she nails this sound. I choose to believe she was apprehensive of the message but upon hearing this Hatchie level serve was like okay nvm this slays. If this is what OR3 sounds like it'll be my album of the millennium

(I liked more than just those songs but these are the ones I wanted to talk about)

re: the top ten, pretty great stuff. lots of variety and really strong choices! I love seeing what songs clicked the most with you, and that #1 is an exceptional choice and will definitely be high on my own list.

Amazing list! cant wait for the rest
