Adele: I chose to reject the idea you have to be constantly relevant to be successful

Adele just received the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at the Hollywood Reporter's annual Women in Entertainment gala.

You can see the whole speech below, but I think this part of it is worth highlighting.

"The real reason that I only have four albums is that my son is 11 years old. So if you do the math, that means right at the height of "21," I fell pregnant. To many that would be, and it was, considered a career suicide. However, always one to go against the grain, it was there and then that I chose to reject the scarcity of success, and the idea that you have to be constantly relevant to be successful. And that perhaps, just maybe, I could be a hit both on and off the stage. And you never guess what, I f*cking got away with it. And why? Because of all the sacrifices that the women before me had made. It's because of them that I have every right to be the boss at work and the boss at home. So, thank you!"

The above quote part starts at around 4:35 minutes mark in the video.

The speech is 10/10, love her but release more albums plz

Tbh, the gap between her albums doesn’t feel as long these days. Beyonce took six years, Ariana’s taken three, Rih has taken eight years. I guess Adele kinda normalized long absences at the height of your fame

Yeah, Adele was heavily pregnant when recording Skyfall in 2012, lol. And yet most people have never seen even one picture of him.

She literally said before 25 happened that she didn’t care that she took such a long break, because she doesn’t care about reaching 21 levels of success.

So of course when 30 comes around, 6 years later, there was very much a high risk she would once again fail to match 21/25 and she very much didn’t care. She took those risks knowing that was on the cards and chose not to worry about staying as relevant.

If she was pushing re-releases, back to back projects, never ending singles, that would be something to shade her with. She dropped two singles and bounced.

She’s right. Not all people can handle extreme success and fame.
