I very much disagree with the way she worded this. She probably meant to say that the cover isn't coming from the exact same place, which is true, but as far as emoting and being able to sell the sentiment of the song? Some of the greatest singers of all time have done some of the greatest covers of all time, covers that were elevated because said singer added more dimension or a unique perspective to it. They were able to do this because singing, like all artforms, is creative expression. Not writing the lyrics of a song doesn't mean one can't effectively relay the message. Gospel, Opera, etc. wouldn't exist if such was the case. Many of the singers in those genres are vessels. Music is a universal language for a reason.

To an extent, she is partially correct that the best person to emote the song is the one who wrote it, but some people cannot write songs but can greatly express when they are singing. And what about writers who cannot sing or be emotive in singing?

 

It sounds like she is minimising the capabilities of emotive vocalists. Maybe she is just protective of her own work but she could have phrased it better.

Beyoncé is more involved in the crafting of her songs than of her peers (excluding obvious examples like Taylor) . Remove the samples from BMS for example and you are left with three songwriters. And songwriting is more than just lyrics, she´s DEFINITELY hands on when it comes to melodies
