Adele on people covering her songs: "They can't sing"

I say good luck trying to cover songs like Love in the Dark, My Little Love or To Be Loved. And it's not just about delivering the melody, but also getting the feeling across. There are songs that are less personal, especially on 25, but still most of her songs are very specific to Adele and her life events, that's what she's talking about in that quote. I recommend people read that whole interview rather than just one line. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/adele-emotional-interview-music-motherhood-hollywood-las-vegas-1235711358/

It does not matter. The possibility of someone covering a song and not only doing it as good, but actually improving it is not that far fetched. The greatest songs sung by the greatest singers were not written by its performers. None of her songs would be in that list.

I 100% get what she's saying,I've never heard someone sing Someone Like You with the same conviction that she has :michael:

Also you're quite ville for reducing what she said to just this one headline @Supervillain

Yes?

I do understand what she’s saying to an extent, as I very rarely find covers to be better than the original, however, there are cases where I think the cover surpasses the original. Some examples being:

So I don’t think it’s fair to say you have to write the song to be able to connect with it as both of the examples above prove. We’ve all heard songs that feel like they were written for us, so you can definitely connect with something on a deeper level even though it wasn’t your creation. Adele herself has even done this when she covered Promise This by Cheryl and created something superior.

That's subjective though. And being able to deliver the feeling of the song as both the singer and songwriter definitely matters for many people, even if the cover singer is more talented as a vocalist. That's why Bob Dylan is so respected even if his voice isn't the greatest. And same for Leonard Cohen. And I don't necessarily totally agree with Adele here, I was just trying to think what's her logic behind the quote. Anyway, I don't wanna argue over this. Each to their own.

there are songs by other singers performed better by the cover

Kelly's cover of I Know You Wont by Carrie is better

Whitney's cover of I Will Always Love You is better

but NONE so far for Adele not even Kelly can make a better cover of Adele, the emotion is just aint there

She didn’t write Make You Feel My Love. Guess she can’t sing it

Very silly comments from her

So she’s saying that no one can properly emote a song if they didn’t write the lyrics and she’s a Beyoncé stan :dies:

she doesnt admire Beyonce as a singer tho, more of a performer like the sing and dance part

Covering someone's song used to be considered one of the highest honors back in the day.

Kelly made a better cover than the original singer Carrie

that's an example of how you can make a better version than the original

She’s boring me and she needs to apply that voice to a house banger to change up her style. I think living in California has made her brain soft. I’m not buying this ‘serious artist’ nonsense from her anymore and I don’t know WTF that is on her head but it makes her look like an old lady, which is hardly going to endear her to younger music fans who simply roll their eyes whenever her name is mentioned.

That's a very personal opinion. I definitely like Carrie's original better than Kelly's version. Although I can recognize Kelly did a fine job.

She made some points. Some songs only belong to the artist. Feel very personal to them.
Like people trying to cover Hips Dont Lie by Shakira. :giraffe: that song belongs to her

Posted

I see her point

SHE wrote them and when SHE sings it, it has a certain emotion around it that no one can replicate because they didn't live thru what She has lived thru for that song to be created.

Yall need to stop being so shallow and look at the deeper meaning of things

no it's not

Carrie's was bland, she's better in powerful country songs like Last Name and Before He Cheats

but with ballad she lacks the vulnerability and emotional connection

that's why her best American Idol perfs are her loudest like Alone

That's such a pretentious and stupid opinion, I ignored she was this type of person.

Girl i love Kelly but she cannot outdo Carrie’s IKYW :rip:

I get what Adele means. She doesn’t mean she sounds better than everyone in the world, but since they weren’t in the places she’s been, it’s hard, if not impossible, for anyone to pick up and convey the emotions behind her songs. The kii would be if someone like Nicki or Dua said something like this, but Adele has deep, emotional musoc.

Then explain this

Not true but love her confidence :heart2:

She’s atrocious

Posted

I think she's saying this because she's still traumatized from Lena's abominable cover of 'My Same'

Yes Queen Adele. Drag these writing camp girls.

She woke up and chose chaos :biblio:

I get what she’s saying but the way it was worded nnnn.

Its interesting though that ppl are acting mad here considering that atrlers nowadays have been shilling that vocals are not important over everything else in a song like lyrics. Most atrlers share the same opinion as she does but since its Adele they’d rather drag her.
