It's not like stans argue about who will get this coveted award or that it's going to be talked about after... today. Elon Musk got it in 2021. It's just... not that big of a deal. Popular Post gettsleazy Posted December 6, 2023 Popular Post Posted December 6, 2023 People going back and forth on politics in here and on Twitter fail to recognize that Swift dominated the cultural zietgiest this year. I mean, every single week it was something Swift. The Ukranian mishegoss was an easy way for TIME/The Democrats to give themselves a pat on the back last year. Anyone with a decent sense of reason understands that the U.S. support for Ukraine during their subjugation and their active suppression of Palestine/support for Zionism this year is entirely hypocritical. It is obvious western media is propagandizing Israels "struggles" in favor of the abject horror Palestine is facing every day, but I don't think using Taylor Swift as the backbone of this argument by some users online is being done in good faith. 9 6
spiritboy Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 MJ and Madonna’s peaks were humongous, they did it in a more difficult environment when there was no internet or social media. And unless you lived those eras (i did), you can’t compare them. MJ especially dominated every continent, even Africa. Taylor has s long way to go (i mean she can still achieve so many great things) but she is without a doubt the biggest artist since those days. People claiming other artists were bigger better show receipts of charting multiple albums in top 10 of charts of many different countries. 1

It's closer to a Peace Nobel Prize than to those. Elon Musk is an extremely impactful person and was widely admired by most of the world in 2021. Edited December 6, 2023 by GreenEnvy 1 1

I spent my time in this thread praising Taylor and in my very same post you quoted, I said she still deserves it in spite of the Israel-Palestine conflict. We actually agree on every point you made except— Western media has absolutely been skewed in favor of Israel, not Palestine, and has been erasing the atrocities that have occurred there not just this year, but in the past 75 years. That’s not up for debate, nor is this the thread for me to educate you on how Zionists have been working overtime to push media publications to favor Israel’s apartheid state and hide their genocidal actions. Regardless, like I said, Taylor still deserves this award, but it’s also true that Time (just like every other Western publication) would gladly award Taylor with this, rather than continue to raise attention for the bravery of Palestinian journalists and people. Perhaps they may do it next year, but I doubt it. Sorry this wasn't really meant to target you, just the people saying that stuff moreso. But western media is absolutely skewed toward Israel. But this case is not a good example of that I am sorry. Taylor has had more impact simply this year. Even if her winning isn't as moral and helpful for activism 2
olivethetree Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 It’s insane how this is the SECOND time she’s POTY. First time was in 2016 for the Silence Breakers cover.

I only want to continue to raise awareness for Palestine and their people

The people/entities that have been named POTY each year are, without a doubt, some of the most historally recognizable figures — for better or worse. That transcends accolades that apply strictly to the entertainment field. How is that not in the same realm as the NPP, which awards innovators and legacies that quite literally reshape history with their inventions, advocacy, and contributions to society? 6 1
Lord Gaga Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 The way she simply is just dominating this year it's not even surprising anymore. I just wake up every day waiting to here what new accomplishment she's achieved. 1

A magazine that saw a decline in subscriptions of over 60% in the last 10 years. No recognition won by Elon Musk can be considered the highlight of a career as big as Taylor's. Give me a break. 3

Idk why you guys are highlighting the negative winners of this title as if it’s supposed to demean it. The Hitlers and the Trumps are just as historically relevant as the MLKs and the Ghandis. For better or worse, they altered the trajectory of human history. Taylor Swift being in that company, both the greats and the evils, is one of the most impressive accomplishments I’ve ever witnessed in my 15 years of being a fan. AOTY at the Grammys is just musicians. Touring is just for entertainers. POTY awards technological, political, and historical figureheads of the utmost relevance. 15 2
Ger Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Absolutely deserved, gigantic year for her, and wow, I've seen part of her interview, she has a lot to say and I'm glad she is speaking up!

What has Taylor invented, what has she advocated for outside the bruised ego of her own victimhood (she spent her landmark profile speaking once again on Kim Kardashian as an almost career ending threat) or contributed to society apart from another well marketed uber product for masses to latch onto? She was named Person of the Year for her overwhelming commercial success within the entertainment field and the accolade is essentially a puff piece by Time. An apolitical Disney corp esq popstar who is rambling on in her interview like this about re-releasing her albums, and knows nothing except extreme capitalism and posturing that benefits her own pockets and cultural cache, is leagues away from having the attributes or achievements comparable to winning a Nobel Peace Prize. It requires cultism, hubris and narcissism to even think so. 14

Let me know if you actually want to have this discussion, because based on your inherent biases against her art and her success, I figure anything I say at this point would just be a waste of breath. But for anyone else that is a neutral party, Taylor Swift has reshaped history by ascending to the pinnacle of her industry amidst the dilution of monoculture, which is an impressive feat. This is no different than a politician becoming their country’s leader, or an entrepreneur becoming the CEO of a multibillion dollar corporation. We can argue about the ethics and the optics all day long but at the end of the day, these figures had a dream, accomplished that dream, and that dream now directly affects the lives of hundreds of millions (if not billions) of people directly. 10 1
Popular Post woohoo Posted December 6, 2023 Popular Post Posted December 6, 2023 Poor OTH . She’s left them with nothing. When I called her the grinch for taking and taking from them I was joking but this is too far. The meltdowns didn’t let me down. Maybe she can take a break in 2025 and let them breathe and rebuild. It’s simply cruel and not right at this point. 25
