billboard (in conjunction with radio) is def able to rig holiday music even more than they are with regular song releases , and in my mind this basically amounts to a legacy #1/participation award.

 

that’s not to take away from the song, brenda lee & her legacy … any of that. of course the song is a mega hit , and in fact they did the same thing with mariah / changed the rules to make it to where AIWFCIY was able to reach #1 so many years after it’s release even tho it was already so ubiquitous at that point …. 

 

anyway this rant was made in part to say that they better use their powers of rigging to give Kelly and Ariana eventual holiday #1s with Underneath The Tree and Santa Tell Me respectively (altho for Ari they should payola True Love or Winter Things instead but alas her song was already chosen for her)

Ari should also do a Santa Tell Me remix … maybe with Mariah since she ended the beef by putting her on the Oh Santa remix

the rule change back in like 2019 or whatever yes made it easier to account for holiday streams, but again that is in conjunction with the fact that holiday songs dominate radio during this time. as both Underneath the Yree and Santa Tell Me grow year after year , they have the potential to become #1s as well. they are pretty much the only current songs from present day contemporary artists that have a shot at that.
