i think bc some androids have 2 buttons on the right side so regular people arent familiar which is the lock

Android "phones" require you to throw away all basic, human logic to use them.

yes but regular people natively use the left side buttons when it's easier to hold

the thing is androids dont all follow this pattern, sometimes the volume/power keys are on the right which can be confusing

she even asked and pressed the right side and still couldn't take the picture, so is it really a phone issue

well yes she did try to figure it out, by asking the fan. and she did press the side button intuitively for the photo which is a function on both an iphone OR an android. + again, there's the center button which both types of phones have
