Shakira handed over more than $7 million to a court investigating her over another alleged tax fraud.

The Colombian superstar has paid $7.2 million million to a Spanish court investigating her for unpaid taxes, her agent said, just days after she reached a deal to avoid trial in another tax case
 

Spanish prosecutors in July opened a second case against Shakira, accusing her of using a network of companies, some of them based in tax havens, to cheat Spain's tax office out of some $7.2 million in 2018, including interest and adjustments.

The $7.2 million payment does not imply either the singer's guilt or innocence in the case, but is 'another demonstration of her willingness to repay her possible debts to the Spanish tax authorities'. 
 

The Colombian artist will continue to be investigated over the suspected 2018 tax breaches.
 

This criminal probe was launched ahead of her admission at the start of last week in a separate case to six counts of tax fraud she committed in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
 

But if the ongoing criminal investigation leads to a new trial, her settlement of her tax debt is likely to lead to a more lenient eventual sentence.
 

In the new case, the prosecutor alleges that in 2018, Shakira failed to declare profits of $12.5 million from an advance payment for her El Dorado World Tour, among others. Prosecutors argue that she was resident in Spain and so required to tax all her worldwide revenues there, no matter where they were earned. Instead, they say, she diverted money to "companies domiciled in countries with low taxation and high opacity".
 

She is accused of failing to pay 5.4 million euros in income tax and accused of defrauding the state of 773,600 euros in wealth tax.

I noticed in Shaki's more recent statements about her tax issues, she kept name dropping her accountancy company and saying she "trusts" them, so I would not be surprised if she sues them now

 

We don't know for sure whether she intended to handle her tax this way, but it seems clear she has been guided by the wrong people who convinced her to keep on denying everything despite all the evidence against her. It made the situation much much worse than it could have been.
