Why the NFL Is Using Thanksgiving to Expand Its Halftime Show Ambitions

Quote

The Super Bowl Halftime Show is a bona fide cultural phenomenon. Now the NFL wants to do the same thing for its Thanksgiving day games.

Quote

“When you look at what these two games do in terms of viewership — compared to anything else on television — we knew that these platforms really are unique opportunities for artists,” says Seth Dudowsky, the NFL’s head of music, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “And so over the past few years, we’ve looked at it and said, Why can’t this be the next biggest platform for us after The Super Bowl Halftime Show? We’ve seen what that show has been able to do in terms of elevating the fandom, the excitement for the Super Bowl, and so taking a similar approach for Thanksgiving Day.”

Indeed, the NFL’s Thanksgiving games are routinely the most-watched broadcasts on TV after the Super Bowl. Last year, for example, the Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants game on Fox averaged 42 million viewers, the most-watched regular season game of all time. The average viewership for the three Thanksgiving games was 33.5 million, a monster number.

Quote

“When you start stacking it up against anything else on television — any other sporting event or award show — compared to these numbers, it stands out as a viewership opportunity for these artists,” Dudowsky says. “Not just the day itself, which clearly is after the Super Bowl the next biggest musical performance opportunity there is, but it’s also the partnership with us to involve you in the NFL ecosystem at large.”

Do you think moving forward, we'll see more big artists perform at the Halftime Shows of the NFL's Thanksgiving games?

watching football on Thanksgiving always been an American tradition.

it be nice to have the hottest/trending up and coming stars do Thanksgiving and save the SBHTS for the A-listers and big performers.

Interesting.... I guess this is a great method to clear a backlog of people who are at halftime show level hits-wise. Was Hov involved in this one? If not, I'm assuming Thanksgiving will be operated by some other advisory group while Jay-Z will still helm the Super Bowl Halftime show ?

It would be cool to see younger stars who might not yet have an extensive enough catalog/legacy for the Super Bowl do this, so they have more of a budget and focused medley than a VMA or Grammy performance. My mind goes to Billie and Doja. I still think Miley is Super Bowl ready.

I mean, at least make a functioning stage before you go around talking about serving Superbowl quality.

Now I’ll get to be thankful my family doesn’t watch sports each Thanksgiving.

I mean, this could work if they promote it correctly.

NFL fans do not care about these half time shows, but let me digress, legened bebe rexha started off last year with her PANNED performances

They should be busy trying to keep the sport relevant among Gen Z and Gen Alpha. I can see a HUGE dip in general interest for the sport among young men compared to men over the age of like 30. Gen z also seems to drink a lot less than millenials which makes me think even guys who just casually watch the sport for an excuse to drink with their friends won't be a thing as much anymore.
