I'm like 95% happy with the results and loved exploring the handful of Hikki albums I didn't know before. I love hosting rates as both a creative outlet and an opportunity to discuss the music I love I hadn't done any in literal years, so I was kinda nervous but I found slipping back into it quite comfortable! I think this is the best one I ever did to be honest! I feel like ATRL rates have kind of dried up a lot since I used to host them back pre-2019, but I hope we start seeing more. Especially J-Pop types! I'm ready to stan Namie and the Perfume girlies, and I eagerly await the chance to do deep dives for Ayu and Shiina and... well, I'm down for whoever else too! And thanks to all the peeps who voted, commented, even just viewed the thread. Wouldn't have been any fun at all without y'all keeping the discussion and draggings going. 11

Cruel Summer Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Reviewing the top ten right now, I think the biggest thing that stands out is definitely the winner. I knew that Somewhere Near Marseilles was a strong contender so I’m not shocked to see it in the top two, but Sakura Drops does just kind of feel right as a winner. Very much deserving of the spot. It’s one of those songs that I think clicks with a lot of people immediately as they get into her work, but doesn’t get tiresome over time - in fact, I almost think it’s even better today than the first time I heard it. And really, I can say the same of Deep River. While it will never be Fantôme for me, it’s a close second these days. It’s an enduring kind of quality, timeless and true. I’m not shocked to see it have the top average score, and by a larger margin over some of the other albums than I expected. Personally, I think the biggest thing I took away from this rate was really transforming my opinion of Distance as I listened to it more and more during the reveals. I almost think it could be in my top four now, and that’s up from… basically last among her Japanese albums? That’s been a really interesting experience. 3

Keep Tryin' (aka the best Ultra Blue song) ending up having the best average score on that album? iktr Kimini Muchuu is another one of my faves, I would've loved if it were top 3 but traveling is a pretty hard one to beat. (I would even put it above Marseilles but that's another conversation ) And Sakura Drops was my 11 so I'm happy I manifested that #1 position I discovered Utada's music last year and this rate made me rediscover their catalogue and gave me some new songs to stan. I managed to snatch a vinyl for every album during last years limited edition release. I had them stored away and opened them up out of their packaging for the first time for this rate.
