Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 Back to business! HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 1 (Reverie) LOWEST SCORE: 3.5 x 1 (Aria0327) MY SCORE: 7 Motto... motto motto... One Night Magic, the frenetic bop that it is, features Yamada Masashi of rock group THE BACK HORN. It's a bit of an odd one, isn't it? Certainly memorable though, I'll give it that. Though I don't believe it to be one of the standouts on the album, it's hard to deny that there's a lot of catchy elements at play here. I also believe this is the first time that a featuring artist appeared on an Utada album! I mean, I guess Timbaland get a feat for Wonder Bout but... less said about that one, the better. Now, for such a funny joyous bop, would you believe that the subject matter concerns Hikaru LUSTING for her friend's man? Like dang, you're that kind of friend, sis? The kind of magic he'll be experiencing during this one night? My favorite line in this messy-ass song has to be the one where Hikki questions what kind of music the couple listens to in the car, and then insists that she can give him a CD that's more interesting. nnn yas, self promote a bitsy. AMIT is not here for quickies: "cute, but I basically only play it when I listen to the full album." Ewan Chaos wants a credit from la Rosalia: "The chorus being a precursor for moto(mami) YAAS." And Curaga leaks the text from my Grindr profile: "Fun/Cute." 1 5

Ewan Chaos Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Love this song, but I figured it wouldn't get too far. Love that chorus. Motto, motto motto, OH Motto, motto AETARA 2 1
Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 (edited) HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 2 (Ewan Chaos, confide in me) LOWEST SCORE: 3 x 1 (Curaga) MY SCORE: 6.5 This one is a little funky. I mean, that groove is kind of anaemic sounding, but I have to take what I'm given on these early albums. Giving a tired romance a second try is a pretty universal idea... like, who hasn't wanted to beg for a second chance at some point? Not me, as I'd rather die than text my ex, but maybe I might've begged the record label for another chance at some better album tracks... Apparently, Hikaru wanted all of us to give this song another chance too, since they included it on not one, but two of their concert tours. The 2000 inclusion I get, we were only one album down at that point and the girls needed something on the setlist, something for the teeny boppers to hop to if you will. But for it to appear again in 2004? Now sis... there were better options off of Distance and Deep River by then. There was no excuse! If you think we're ever going to have a First Love/Distance elim without draggings from Curaga then you're wrong! "Like a worse Automatic." nnn now sis, don't be putting that target on your back too early... Edited January 19 by Subomie

Cruel Summer Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Okay, Another Chance is kind of great - I think it’s my favorite from the latter half of the album after some reevaluation (though admittedly my score for it was just under what I gave Time Will Tell). But I’m a real sucker for the kind of sound that First Love (album) has when done well. 1

Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 2 (confide in me, nostalgic) LOWEST SCORE: 3 x 1 (Curaga) MY SCORE: 9 This... this kind of knocks. Like, I'm bopping hard. An amalgamation of pop, dance, and rock, Kettobase! is a defiant track that exemplifies the growth and willingness to experiment that Hikaru gained between the debut and sophomore records. While First Love Hikki was mostly concerned with pop ballads and R&B grooves, Kettobase! is a revelation. They said they weren't going to be put into a box, not today. A song that bounces between extremes - deepest devotion and utter revulsion - the frenetic sound of the music complements the lyrics well. And let's talk about the lyrics too, right? I mostly love them. Seeing a smack-talking Hikaru is a delight, and I love the acknowledgment of their public persona ("my cheerful personality backfires"). It's all shaping up to be a grand package... but that line. You know the one. It opens the song, repeats throughout. On a good day, I can kind of breeze past it, but on bad days? Oof. On my first listens I found that opening line so off-putting. Eighteen year-old Hikki pleading for a baby? Eugh... shudders It took me a while to get past that and appreciate the track underneath. But I do! It's a Distance favorite for me now! But man, I still kinda wish the line was different... AMIT caught stanning for a bop in 40K: "an album track that's also a classic, not everyone has that!" Meanwhile, Curaga found calling CPS about the teen pregnancy next door: "Haaate the first line lmao. Not a bad vocal performance at all, but I just don’t like this song." 1
Cruel Summer Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Honestly while I gave this song a pretty good score, I feel like I lowballed Distance on all but one track. I’ve been kind of coming around on a lot of it today. 1
Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 One more for you girls, and it's dedicated to the Pokémon stans. IYKYK!
