Cruel Summer Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Yuunagi is their best song for me, and I will die on this hill (even if it’s okay that y’all don’t feel the same) The haunting sound, the beautiful and raw emotion of it, the solemn chant near the and that’s typically meant to be upbeat and vibrant, the strings - it’s all literally perfect. I don’t know if anyone else has read this, but I read that it was initially supposed to be a Fantôme track and she couldn’t get it where she wanted it in time to include it there. Since then, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of it having been the closing track of that album in another life, because it fits truly, completely perfectly. It’s not really even the typical kind of song that gets me from their discography, but honestly, I love it more than anything. I gave it my 11 not to try to give it a boost, but because I honestly and truly knew immediately that it would feel wrong to give it to anything else. 3 1
Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 1 (AMIT) LOWEST SCORE: 5 x 2 (Curaga, Aria0327) MY SCORE: 5.5 Released as a double A-side single with Time Limit, For You was the third release from Distance and lo and behold - an easy #1! Hikki was just throwing them out and cashing in chart toppers at this point in their career. Though this was notably the only one of the Distance singles that didn't cross one million copies sold... Is that perhaps an indicator of a lesser quality song? Well... maybe. Ah, I shouldn't be so harsh. For You is a nice track, all chilled out and with some cute melodies to sing along to. It doesn't achieve much more than "nice" for me, though. I do enjoy some of the production flourishes, but it kind of blends in with the scenery I fear. While I have a lot of time for Time Limit, I feel like another album track might've made for a better single choice than For You. Distance is way too eclectic to have just For You representing it imo! All of that AND it only got a live performance music video. Hate them, always have and always will (and they make graphic designing so much more ugly...). They were knee-deep on their 2000 Summer Tour at this time, so the live performance at the shows served as the music video for the single. How lazy. Well, if Hikki ain't gonna put in effort then neither am I. Bye! Distance anti Curaga throws some more shade: "Sounds so similar to the previous track, but not as good." Luckily, the good sis Distance always has AMIT in her corner: "one of my fave Utada songs, a chill R&B bop. the beat is so infectious, you can't help but bop along to it." 1

Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 Keep the mourning attire on girls, you're all going to need it for the next track.

Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 I love reading what you guys think of the songs btw! Listening back to Yuunagi and For You, picking up little details and aspects I overlooked. Thinking I could've thrown on another .5 or even a whole point... it makes rate running more fun 2

Sad to see it go now, oh well.
Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 HIGHEST SCORE: 9.5 x 2 (scenekiller, Meloetta Carey) LOWEST SCORE: 5 x 3 (Ewan Chaos, Aria0327, Hey Dude) MY SCORE: 8.5 Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is an instrumental track composed by Ryuchi Sakamoto for the 1983 film of the same name. The song was a big success - winning Sakamoto the BAFTA for best film score, becoming a hit single in the UK, and going on to become a Christmas staple in the US and Japan alike (at least Wiki says so. I've never heard it before nn). It's been remixed into a charting tune more than once, and in 2009 Hikaru Utada gave it a shot at making it their own. FYI takes the piano-lead melody of the original, throws in some hip-hop beats and just allows Utada to free style over the new track. And it weirdly works! Maybe it's the Sakamoto track that gives this one a... fuller sound, but unlike most of This Is The One, FYI comes across more joyous and less... cynical. Or is that just me? It's fun and light and chill. Chilling and flossing, apparently! It has some of the same funny lyrical tropes as the rest of the album, but they just work better here, idk why. Maybe I'm biased! A bright spot on a pretty bland album. Curaga joins me in the himbo brigade: "I didn’t know until just this month that this interpolates a song from a movie of the same name! The lyrics are kinda funny, but I actually like this one a lot better than I used to."

Cruel Summer Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I would have liked Apple & Cinnamon to outlast, but I also gave this a 9, so I’m happy it made it pretty far.

Cruel Summer Posted January 19 Posted January 19 One entire album out while another entire album stays in, I think we know the average favorite album of this rate at this point 1
Graves Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 I'm not gonna lie to y'all! I dragged This Is The One (and I'd do it again!), but since I started posting these eliminations I've found dumb parts of that album sticking in my head. The chorus of Taking My Money Back, Me Muero, the spoken-word on Poppin'. It's camp. It's fun. It's something for the kids. I live a little bit. 3
Ewan Chaos Posted January 19 Posted January 19 R.I.P. This is the One, I like it a touch more than Exodus but not mad (or surprised nn) that it's the first out. Didn't really care for this song and did not expect it to be the highest from the album tbh
poki Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Exodus grew on me after the my neighbor's dead I want sex now moment 3
