10 Times Michelle Williams Proved She Is The Queen Of R&B Bridges

Sis never met a bridge she couldn't cross.

Michelle Williams may have been the last member to join Destiny’s Child, but she immediately proved just how much she could contribute to group mates Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland’s own vocal stylings, often taking on the bridge of their more iconic songs, as well as fan-favorite deep cuts.

In celebration of the R&B and Gospel star’s 44th birthday (July 23), we’ve compiled 10 tracks that prove the songstress is second-to-none when it comes to showcasing her immense talent via catchy bridges that are often the highlight of both DC classics and lesser-known gems.

Check them out below.

"Survivor"

Williams and Bey’s back-and-forth runs on “Survivor” set up the gospel-trained singer to highlight her own vocal abilities on the track as she wrapped up the bridge solo.

“After all of the darkness and sadness, soon comes happiness
If I surround myself with positive things, I’ll gain prosperity.”

"Bootylicious"

Also featured on the Survivor album was 2nd single “Bootylicious,” where Williams implores listeners to drop it low on the opening of the groovy bridge before her group members join in.

“Move your body up and down
Make your booty touch the ground
I can’t help but wonder why
Is my vibe too vibealacious for you, babe?

I shake my jelly at every chance
When I whip with my hips, you slip into a trance
I’m hopin’ you can handle all this jelly that I have
Now let’s cut a rug while we scat some jazz
Pa pa de do da-de
Pa pa de do da-de do
Pa de-de oh
Pa de-de oh”

"Lose My Breath"

Following two high-energy verses from Kelly and Bey on “Lose My Breath”, Michelle smooths things out on the bridge while keeping the vibe going.

“If you can’t make me say ‘Ooh’
Like the beat of this drum
Why you asked for some?
You ain’t really want none
If you can’t make me say “Ooh” (Ooh, ooh)
Like the beat of this groove
You don’t have no business in this
Here’s your papers, baby
You are dismissed!”

"Is She The Reason"

With Bey on verses and Kelly taking care of the pre-chorus, Michelle, once again, anoints the bridge of Destiny Fulfilled deep cut, “Is She The Reason.”

“All you had to say was this ain’t what you want
I won’t be so hurt and I could just move on
You had me believing everything was my fault
But I can see it now
It’s a situation that I must let go
Cause you ain’t gonna be a man and let me know
I guess me seeing you with her says it all”

"Girl"

Also from Destiny Fulfilled, “Girl” finds Beyoncé and Michelle attempting to convince Kelly to leave a troublesome relationship, with Williams highlighting the stress her sister has been put through while powerfully emphasizing the importance of friendship during hard times.

“Girl, take a good look at yourself (Girl)
He got you goin’ through hell (Girl)
We ain’t never seen ya down like this (No, no, girl)
What you mean you don’t need us to help? (Girl)
We known each other too well, whoa, oh oh, yeah yeah!”

"Cater 2 U"

Speaking of smoothing things out, Williams’ angelic soprano beautifully compliments the overall vibe of one of the group’s most well known ballads, “Cater 2 U.”

“I wanna give you my breath (Yeah)
My strength (Yeah)
My will to you (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
That’s the least I can do, let me cater to you (To you)
Through the good, the bad (Through the good, the bad)
The ups and the downs (Ups and downs)
I’ll still be here for you, let me cater to you
Cause you’re beautiful (You’re beautiful)
I love the way you are (You are)
Fulfill your every desire (Desire)
Your wish is my command (Your wish, command)
I wanna cater to my man (Cater to my man)
Your heart (Your heart)
So pure, your love shines through (Shines through)
The darkness, we’ll get through (We’ll get through)
(S-S-So much) So much of me is you (Is you)
I wanna cater to my man (Cater to my man)”

"T-Shirt"

One of the sexiest songs the group has every recorded, Destiny Fulfilled track “T-Shirt” finds Williams imploring her man to “take it easy” in the best was possible during a love-making session.

“Ooh, boy I’ve been waiting
Got my body shaking
You’re so deep, baby please, take it easy
I look at your face and
Got my heart racing
You’re so deep, baby please, take it easy”

"Through With Love"

A vocal highlight for the songstress, her bridge work on Destiny Fulfilled track “Through With Love” showcases her incredible range, signature tone, and gospel roots as she belts over a powerful choral background arrangement.

“Why do I feel so empty?
I’m crying out for some stability
Destroy my many insecurities
I’m breaking down, somebody pray for me
Need a love like no other, not an ordinary love
Restore my joy, wisdom and courage
Lord, I need your love
I found a new love
I found a new, found a new love
I finally found it in God

I don’t have to hurt no more!
I don’t have to weep no more!
My heart don’t have to hurt no more!”

"Stand Up For Love"

Another stand-out moment for the pro, 2005’s “Stand Up For Love” found the Illinois native imploring listeners to not only love their neighbor, but to speak up on behalf of those who’ve been silenced within society.

“And it all starts right here
And it starts right now
One person stands up, and
And the rest will follow
For all the forgotten
For all the unloved
I’m gonna sing this song”

"You Changed"

Kelly Rowland joint “You Changed” from her 2013 solo album Talk A Good Game featured both of her DC sisters, with Williams, once again, utilizing her deliciously raspy tone for the mid-tempo groove’s bridge.

“Now you wanna claim you got a clue
Boy, what’d you expect for me to do?
You claim you wanna have a life or two
But you can save your ‘sorry’s’ and your ‘I love you’ too”

I hate how she was always restricted to the bridges in the beginning of her tenure with Destiny's Child. She had much more to sing in Destiny Fulfilled, but she still should have been given more—if even being the more prominent voice in harmonies and backing vocals.

She could have easily carried more songs. I feel like she could have, especially, owned "Through With Love," which she was always the highlight of.
