They are really easy to compare since both had the sophomore slump Olivia wasn't lazy. She promoted everywhere she could. Multiple magazine covers, several you tube shows (wired, 73 questions, wired) , international fan events, opening vmas and countless radio shows. And she's still promoting- she did several late night shows last week and is performing at the Rock Hall of Fame ceremony. Having two prerelease singles and one ablum release single is also perfectly normal and not lazy. There were two main issues. The first issue was that only vampire had an good pop hook and even then it wasn't nearly as strong as drivers license or good 4 u. The second issue was that promo was extremely boring b/c she was too careful to say anything interesting. The only things I learned about Olivia is that she loves rock and doesn't want to talk about Taylor. The lack of narrative reduces people's interest in listening to the whole album instead of just vampire. Sour's success was greatly driven by the strong love triangle narrative which she lacks now. Bonus minor issue- Olivia's streams notably decrease whenever Taylor releases new music. A high percentage of her fans are still swifties and so with Taylor active they are streaming her music over Olivia's. 1 1
ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted November 3, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted November 3, 2023 The album isn’t that accessible. Imo, SOUR was the much better album. It had an issue with being redundant thematically. But, each song really stood on its own and that lended it well to streaming because people would find their own favorite album tracks. People seemed to latch onto different songs from the album at its peak. GUTS doesn’t really have that. The rollout also has been… pretty bad. SOUR wouldn’t have been as big of a hit if it weren’t for Drivers License being such a runaway success, followed by the great second single that was Deja Vu, and then the infectious Good 4 U. It was a great rollout. GUTS, on the other hand, had a Black Friday sale version of Drivers License and then was followed by a fine punk song that isn’t that accessible or attention grabbing to the GP. 8 2 5

Doogle Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 The album is still great and better than Sour but I guess the GP are less interested in this sound. Which isn’t surprising since they have no taste 1
Badgalbriel Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 She ditched the good sound of sour to go with the lame pop-rock sound. 1 3 1
EDEJtheArtist Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 It’s interesting how a lot of user keep insinuating that Olivia is some kind of flop or underperforming, I’ve never really been that into her music but this girl is wildly successful and made one of the most iconic albums of the 2020s. Also one other point there were not a lot of blockbuster albums being released in early 2021 due to the pandemic so there was a huge lack of competition, as opposed to now in the last couple months we’ve had so many big releases. 2
Big Bad Wolf Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 *I don't follow charts* Didn't Billie have a similar fate with HTE? But since then, I feel like she has garnered more interest and her next album will smash. Maybe this will happen to Olivia too. Both of their debuts were so massive, it's only natural for there to be a decline, but it doesn't mean they can't recapture people's attention. 3
chiliam Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 The top is very competitive now. Taylor and Morgan and Sza and Zach Bryan residency. Drake and Bad bunny recent release. And all of them except Taylor is more dominated on Apple Music which is more paid stream and rank higher than pop star spotify stream. 1 1
Enrique523 Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Sophomore slump happened, even if her stans are still EXTREMELY in denial about it. 1 1
Little Joannester Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 They should've focused on either Bad Idea Right or Get Him Back. Both had the potential to be bigger than Vampire (a good song) but they squandered it TBH. A second hit from the album would've really helped I think. 1
JennyWayne Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 This kinda reminds me of WWAFAWDWG/HTE. The first era was just so big that any second era would feel like a sophomore slump. In itself the album did well. Nothing outstanding, but far from a flop or arguably even an underperformance. 1

Alldeezy Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 The year sour dropped must of been a slow music year. Im sorry but GUTS so much better than the slow ballad sour album Bring more pop rock Queen

SOUR was a huge record obviously but GUTS is competing against albums by Taylor Swift, SZA, Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan. All four artist have mega albums than have been Top 10 for months. Drake and Bad Bunny putting out albums recently hasn't helped either. GUTS is up against alot, and she doesn't even have a Good 4 U this time. I'll also say what another member stated, alot of her fans are also Swifties, significantly so. In the midst of Taylor mania, they just aren't paying as much attention. 2

For Sour, on week 7, she moved 88K units compared to less than 40K units for week 7. 82K units would have gotten 4th on this chart week. The charts are more competitive but the biggest cause of her being out is Guts's underperformance compared to Sour.(88K was enough to top the charts) Sour's success is a very high bar but she definitely could have performed a fair bit better. But like Billie, she likely has a solid fanbase as shown by her tour numbers, she just needs to evolve her sound and image for her next album.
Bentley Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Will this even pass Romance in streams on Spotify? 5

nostalgic Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Quality over quantity. GUTS is an album of critical acclaim and that doesn't always translate to chart success.
