Last month, Dutch footballer (of Moroccan descent) Anwar El Ghazi was suspended by German football club FSV Mainz 05 because he posted several pro-Palestinian posts on his Instagram Stories.

Due to the backlash he received, he had to explain himself on Twitter:

Earlier this week, Mainz said they’re planning on reinstating Anwar back into the team after he recanted and apologized for his pro-Palestinian stance… except he never recanted his support for Palestine (which he clarified two days ago on Twitter):

Today, Mainz have announced they terminated Anwar El Ghazi’s contract (they disabled the comments on Twitter & their most recent Instagram post):

Here’s Anwar’s response to his contract being terminated:

Everyone…. PLEASE go on Anwar’s Twitter and Instagram profiles and comment your support. Thank you so much

Disgusting how standing against Genocide can ruin your career and maybe even your whole life.

I am so confused. I am pro-Israel (and pro-Palestine fwiw) and i do NOT understand these firings for people expressing what doesn't seem like anything controversial. Did he say something else that wasnt posed in the OP originally?

So not supporting the genocide committed by the Israel/IDF is grounds for being fired?

For the people here not understanding why he's fired: Mainz is a club with a strong Jewish roots. It is to be expected that saying a slogan which has been and is used a lot to call for complete genocide of Israel will not fall well with such a club.

Besides, at the moment anti semitism is strongly on the rise again in Germany. In that light it's even more tricky to use such a controversial line. Especially given Germany's past regarding Jews.

Me personally don't think anyone should be fired over expressing their personal opinion on the conflict, especially since Israel is also slaughtering innocent people right now. But the way he initially expressed himself using such a controversial slogan and refusing to distance himself from using said slogan he kinda had it coming honestly
