It’s true honestly, I’m around Troye’s age and being a preteen/teenager around the time Gaga was parading around the world preaching acceptance and love no matter your identity? It was formative for me and gave me the ability to accept myself despite a heavily religious upbringing that was constantly causing inner turmoil. I’m very grateful to Gaga for the sociopolitical influence she made on a global scale.

Lol i was excited and scared the same time when she would appear and talk about the LGBT. My parents would listen closely what she was saying and thanks god Gaga was educated and smart. My parents didn’t get the message though and were extremely homophobic so they didn’t allow me to listen to her again

Yeah my family was extremely homophobic in those days but they’ve come a long way thanks to these discussions being publicized on such a wide scale in the 2010s. It’s not like I was dying to listen to Gaga’s music but her message was always so resonant and important. I loved seeing her in interviews or award shows at the time, she was like THE person to watch.

ariana inspired me to come out

i shoved her down all of my high school friends (and girlfriend's :ryan3: ) throats to the point where no one could really keep questioning my sexuality

Yes Gaga, yes impact.

but OGHs keep telling me that she has no LGBT impact because she isn't in any rush to celebrate pride every year?

You are lucky. I’m coming from a muslim family and they are really hard on such topics..

Isn't this kind of every white gay experience? Gaga was everything back then when it came to LGBTQ+ representation and visibility.

I miss her when she was like that.

So it's her fault :eli:?

I don’t see a need to reduce it to white gays, I’m half black and half latin (indigenous Mexican) and Gaga’s messaging resonated deeply within me

I understand the challenges that presents when your family prioritizes belief in an unseen being over their own flesh and blood. I sympathize with you, but I hope you’re able to accept and love yourself and in time or with a miracle, hopefully the others will come around.

100%. I would argue that Gaga signalled a shift in mainstream "gay" identity and the beginning of the LGBTQ+ umbrella/general "queer" identity.

She was one of the first mainstream figures at the time to express queerness outside of a white, rich, circuit party aesthetic. She approached being queer as both a political and radical way of being.

People REALLY underestimate how much she singlehandedly changed with the Born This Way album.

Well if i have to be honest, i’m 29 years old and i started to love myself just 2 months ago.. and its not just words coming out of my mouth but i really feel it. And the reason is because i DONT have a family anymore. I don’t feel anything about them. Just weird that when i left the woman who gave birth to me my whole life changed for the best.. i have never been happier, healthier and sexier..
