JoeAg Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Bubblegum Dog is my new obsession. they ate SO hard it reminds me of this song: but like more yassified. so like... 90s version of glam rock but even better and more timeless-sounding!!
JoeAg Posted February 20 Posted February 20 reviews so far: Uncut (9/10) The Skinny (4/5) XS Noize (4/5) PopMatters (7/10) The Arts Desk (3/5) I'm only a bit nervous because they've set the watermark HIGH with Little Dark Age and Congratulations in their discography... but then again, critics do tend to historically underrate them by FAR oh also, Dancing in Babylon, the final pre-release single, is out tonight

It's always been like that In a few years they will get great retrospective reviews

M.R. Posted February 20 Posted February 20 New song with Chris is so good. It sounds like those 80s classic rock duets that are karaoke staples. Can’t wait to hear the album on Friday.
RihLorde Posted February 20 Posted February 20 Whew, the song with Christine and the Queens . Every song so far has been amazing. Strong AOTY contender
JEWRJEWR Posted February 20 Posted February 20 I completely forgot this was coming out this friday omg the new song is ok
ImpassiveThomas Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 Album is out! People in the Streets is a standout
JEWRJEWR Posted February 23 Posted February 23 (edited) still dont know how I feel about this album some songs sound very mercury rev-ish (all is dream era), esp loss of life Edited February 23 by JEWRJEWR
JoeAg Posted February 23 Posted February 23 (edited) I smoked a tiny amount of weed (I like barely smoke ever anymore so my tolerance is incredibly low), I drank some sangria, I put on my fav corduroy jacket, and I am now venturing into this brisk denver night with this! my first first listen of the night Edited February 23 by JoeAg
JoeAg Posted February 23 Posted February 23 on Phradie’s Song and this really is Congratulations 2.0 huh? like it feels like what comes next after the storyline of that album
JoeAg Posted February 23 Posted February 23 okay wow I need to do my other first listens and let this digest but i’ll say this somewhat dizzying statement for now Spoiler so when I was 13, I fell in love with listening to music for the first time. like as a hobby, as something to dissect, as something to just exist with. I had already been writing my own songs for about 5 years at that point, but I had never at my own accord listened to albums front to back. the two albums that brought me there for the first two times were Janelle Monáe’s The Archandroid and MGMT’s Congratulations. don’t remember off the top of my head which came first lol but they both impacted my little 13 y/o brain so profoundly that it felt like those 2 albums became part of my musical DNA, as a musician but also just as Joe. anyway! if I were 13 NOW, this new MGMT album would affect me the same way Congratulations affected me back then. so that’s definitely praise from me! I’ll need to digest it a bit more before I can give it like a score lol
Pendulum Posted February 23 Posted February 23 like, I don't want any self-titled mess (although ST has aged gracefully) and this is exactly what the singles were giving
Moloko Plus Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Nothing Changes is a career highlight, teared up a bit 1
RihLorde Posted February 23 Posted February 23 First listen and I’m already loving the sounds on this album. More stripped back compared to Little Dark Age. But they play with alot of different sounds and styles it’s never not uninteresting. The last minute of Loss of Life is literally breathtaking Still need a couple more spins tho.
GuyNextDoor Posted February 23 Posted February 23 I Loved it. The album cuts are the real highlights. Noting Changes and the title track are top MGMT They could've scrapped Dancing in Babylon tho
JoeAg Posted February 23 Posted February 23 and what if I said that People in the Streets is their best song?

TrueBlood Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I have very mixed feelings towards this album. It sounds like it's full of ideas that were thrown together without making much sense. It's definitely more similar to their early sound than LDA, it's like a more experimental version of Congratulations. And I don't mean it in a good way.
