kawk Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 (edited) YouTube has begun forcing users to disable ad blockers or try Premium, its paid subscription service. The move has been met with backlash from many users, who argue that it is unfair to force them to watch ads or pay for a service they do not want. Online communities, like on Reddit, have been voicing this concern for quite some time and the platform has also circumvented Ublock origin. It seems to have started some time this month: one says "If you have an ad-blocker on, YouTube will now only give you 3 videos to watch a day, similarly to porn sites where they limit the amount of previews you can watch a day, it's ridiculous" Another one says, “I’m thinking honestly about just dropping YouTube from my daily entertainment.” The video-sharing platform has been aggressively using a variety of methods to detect and circumvent ad blockers. In some cases, the company is even disabling video playback for users who are detected using an ad blocker. The only solution? Well, YouTube recommends paying $11.99/month for Premium to get ad-free viewing, and offline and background playback. But, is it worth it? NO. It’ll be a huge bet if YouTube wins this “war” against ad-blockers because there’s always a loophole to find. Even uBlock’s latest version (v. 1.52.0+) seems to be including a “fix” to workaround this issue. quick workaround is to first download uBlock Origin extension to your browser and just block element. Sheep Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 (edited) Honestly I bought youtube premium this year and I've been super happy with it. I understand people have a lot of subscription fatigue but with how much of my media consumption is YouTube the value makes a lot of sense. The non-ad features(downloading videos to watch on flights, being able to keep videos playing in the background on mobile) are nice too. Edited October 15, 2023 by Sheep 4 3
Tropez Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 Make sure to update your filters on uBlock, that should do it if YouTube shows you that pop up. 2 5
Antikythera Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 I have premium for years cause i cant stand ads while watching it on the tv app and this is the way I majorly watch youtube. For me is worth it cause I consume a lot of youtube and u still get the music stream. 3 2

Gorjesspazze9 Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 Before you know it, it will be $20 per month just like Netflix and Hulu, ect.

Bosque Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 I mean the whole deal is you either watch ads or you pay. I get that people don’t like ads but I don’t see why anyone should be outraged or offended by this. It’s not free to host this number of videos. But in the end everyone will be quiet and keep using YouTube, just like with Netflix after they stopped account sharing.
Mike91 Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 I kept getting this the other day but just ignored it. It's stopped now. I ain't paying for YouTube on top of Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, etc, etc. All this **** is going to do is make pirating popular again.
DamianSolo Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 YouTube's ads are getting pretty ridiculous now, especially when it's multiple ones without being able to skip them. 6

Sombre Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 As someone who knows how expensive hosting the amount of data YouTube does, this is not surprising to me. YouTube isn't just gonna sit pretty and let you watch videos for free while 1) they literally lose money and 2) the creator's AdSense money also decreases. Pay for Premium or watch the ads. I just don't get the backlash, you think YT creators haven't been pushing YT to do this? It's selfish watching a creator's video but refusing to give them their due. 1 1
babyboy1 Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 Youtube has thousands of employees they need to pay salary. They are not running a charity. So if you dont want premium then just suck it up and watch ads. 1 1 2
ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted October 15, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted October 15, 2023 Premium or watching ads is literally how content providers pay rent. The aversion to it is so strange. YouTube is good because so many people spend so much time making content for the platform for a living. 3
popmusicisdead Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 i subscribed to premium because Youtube is UNWATCHABLE without it. if you watch a lot of YouTube content like me, it's totally worth it. though i know it's a lot less expensive where i live 2
duybeeGAshantiGA Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 It just depends on how much time you consume Youtube. Easy. As someone who doesnt watch Youtube that much, the ads seem ok (of cóurse sometimes a bit too annoying when there are 2-3 consecutive ads that you can't skip any of them ) but I still can tolerate it because I only watch youtube around 30-45mins a day. If you watch a lot of Youtube I feel like paying is fair. 2

The problem is how intrusive, jarring, and frequent these ads are that make YouTube borderline unusable at times. I pay for Premium because I hate ads, but my partner refuses to do so and he will sometimes just give up on trying to watch a video because of how many ads he is regularly served. It is beyond ridiculous, that should NEVER be the case for a product owned by a company as large and profitable as Google/Alphabet. 4 4
Vixen Eyes Posted October 15, 2023 Posted October 15, 2023 i mean, watching ads is how the youtubers/content creators get paid
