I mean as a pop album (in recent memory) it makes sense. It’s a safe title to pin. It’s just crazy how much more competition there was in the 2000s by comparison that could take that title.

1989 is a capstone album of the 21st century but THEE album of the century?

 

Honestly I think that title belongs to The Fame by Lady Gaga. It defined the turning point of the century so well and was zany, eclectic, and truly set itself apart from the big 90s, 80s, 70s album.

 

A good written and produced album like 1989 could be found in droves from the 90s and 80s, Teenage Dream alone is a good example, a good ballad filled album like 21/25 is produced en masse yearly, 21 was a crazy commercial phenom but it did not stir the pot at ALL. Rap albums are great but I doubt a single rap album is enough to define a century, closest would be The E.N.D. but even then its basically an EDM-rap album. Britney's music is great but her sound is still derivative of existing ones before her and isn't really cut to perfection.

 

But The Fame? Gaga's brand of imagery and crazy pop sounds at the time were truly very novel during 2008-2010. I'd say its the album of the century, not 1989.

obviously and it's serving #teamtoomuch because it's not like the 1989 TV release is gonna need any promo. The original was only the 3rd best selling album of the '10s decade and it sold in the double digits, like calm down

All of a sudden, 1989 not actually being the best selling album of the century also being one of the top con arguments here among users that usually “don’t care about numbers”. 
 

Anyway, I believe pro arguments for this claim objectively do exist ( obviously ), and I support it, but I, for one, wouldn’t know which album to pick as the one.

Doesn't change the fact that E.MO.TION is the better album
