There's this one popular forum in France called jvc.com. While supposed to be about video games, one part of the forum attracts some let's say "strange" individuals. Some months ago, one member made a thread detailing how he was raising a bed bugs colony, with the intention of releasing them at some point. The French gouvernement being as clueless as ever didn't take that seriously and well, look at where we are now.

Yeah, they are absolutely vile creatures and hard to get rid of once you get them. The problem is, you can be totally innocent and just go to a hotel where they go into your luggage / clothes and then infect your home when you get home. A travel blog I read suggested that you put your luggage in the bathroom or only areas with tiles, as this prevents these little monsters from infiltrating your things and then you will not take them home. Be cautious sistrens.
