Everyone ganged up on her saying HTG was bad even though it always felt like this is what she needed to say and put it out in music form to me. Love the album and Rina, seems like that was a healing experience and I love that for her

I’m glad she’s in a better place but it is sickening how common sexual assault is. Way too many people can relate and the fact that no one sees a problem with that :mazen:

Because it’s still a bad album regardless of how sad the inspiration for it is.

It's not a bad bad album? it's not a L+F situation. I can see how it's mid for y'all but not bad. Also inoffensive.

Your Age was one of the only standouts on that album I think, I really enjoyed that one. The rest of the album just felt like it was sonically pandering tbh. Her debut album was so cut throat and diverse and Hold The Girl felt like a disappointing follow up.

I’m sorry that happened but it’s still not a good album, hopefully now that she spoke her truth she can go back to making y2k-futurist excellence :gaynetcat2:

I'm sorry she had to go through all of that.  Hold The Girl is a beautiful album.

disappointing how a thread about rina’s SA and how it inspired themes from her album is full of gays making snarky comments like…some of you should learn not to say anything if you cant be decent, it’s really not that hard :bam:

ot: she’s so strong  your age always stood out to me as it inferred to certain things that i’m able to relate to (unfortunately)

Coming from her full length debut, which was fantastic, and then going to HTG… to me that’s bad.  Maybe it’s mid overall if you don’t compare the two, but I think so many of us loved the sound she created and were super let down when she abandoned it for Disney ballads and super cliché uplifting lyrics with zero irony.  It’s like an entirely different artist made that album aside from one or two tracks.

A lot of this feels like people projecting and assuming Rina's work doesn't have depth to it in comparison to bigger alt-pop girlies adored by gay stan twitter for a variety reasons, with sadly much of the wider discourse around the album in some aspects impacted by subconscious biases about Rina's identity.

A lot of us, for example, found the criticism of something like Phantom as "cheesy" or corny nonsensical because the song's lyrics have had overt references to grooming and abuse, to where this reveal isn't specifically shocking.

There was an entire conversation about this on PopJustice ironically involving Caroline Polachek and how certain alt pop girlies who look like Caroline can cite Dido as an inspiration and double-down that the inspo is 100% not ironic and be deemed as still with artistic merit, yet for some reason Rina made a very conscious, intentional stylistic reference to 2000s Christian-lite pop for how it fits with the album's theme and yet the response by some is "LAME!!! CORNY!!! CHEESY!! DISNEY!!!".

This woman has been making saccharine, earnest pop music since literally her debut. It's not her fault if some just thought she was being ironic when referencing 90s pop and now feel bamboozled when she's yet again unironically referencing a genre they just don't have any nostalgic connection to.

You're complaining about cheesy nostalgia and unironically earnest lyrics from the woman who released THIS?

All of this because you like her cheesy Disney-fied album.  I don’t even know why you’re bringing up Caroline, who has written more songs with significantly complex lyrics and melodies than Rina has in her entire discography (included Rina’s scrapped songs), or Dido, who has influenced many pop and alt pop artists.  Christian-lite pop music was always considered cheesy and was marketed towards actual children and young teenagers.  Stop acting surprised that adults don’t want to hear that.  Rina can do whatever she wants but a lot of her fans are rightfully disappointed with the latest album. :rip:

When you're a rockist masquerading as a poptist. :rip: I guess some truths are just too hard to confront head on.

Kinda wish she had released like a mini documentary alongside the album to explain certain themes.

Sad to hear she had to grow through stuff like that
