She’s done it! Kylie Minogue celebrates her ninth Official Number 1 album with Tension.

The Australian superstar’s 16th studio album, featuring recent Top 10 single Padam Padam and title track Tension, earns 53,000 chart sales in its first week, outselling the rest of the Top 5 combined to reach the summit.

Tension now joins 1988 debut Kylie, 1989’s Enjoy Yourself, 1992 collection Greatest Hits, 2001 record Fever, 2010’s Aphrodite, 2018 release Golden, 2019’s Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection and 2020 LP DISCO in Kylie’s tally of UK chart-toppers.

The success of Tension means Kylie pulls level with Bob Dylan and Coldplay on the list of acts boasting the most Number 1 albums on the Official Chart; each with nine to their name to date. The only female solo artists with more are Taylor Swift and Madonna; with 10 and 12 respectively.

Tension also tops this week’s Official Vinyl Album Chart, and claims Number 1 on the Official Record Store Chart as the most purchased album in the UK’s independent record shops this week.

Olivia Rodrigo makes it a third consecutive week inside the Top 5 with former chart-topper GUTS. The Californian singer-songwriter’s second studio LP holds strong at Number 2.

UK drill trailblazers Headie One and K-Trap claim their first collaborative Top 5 album with STRENGTH TO STRENGTH (3). It earns Tottenham rapper Headie One (real name Irving Ampofo Adjei) his third Top 5 LP following 2019’s Music x Road (5) and 2020 chart-topper EDNA, while London-born rapper K-Trap (real name Devonte Kasi Martin Perkins) secures a career-best; 2022’s The Last Whip II being his highest-charting record previously (12).

Doja Cat earns her second UK Top 5 album with Scarlet, debuting at Number 5. The record, preceded by Number 1 smash Paint the Town Red, Demons and Attention, becomes Doja’s second Top 5 LP. It follows 2021’s Planet Her (3), becoming her third Top 40 album to date. Hot Pink provided Doja her first Official Albums Chart entry in 2019 (38).

Elsewhere, Bakar claims a career-best with Halo at Number 15. The Camden-born experimental singer-songwriter, real name Abubakar Baker Shariff-Farr, previously peaked inside the Top 40 with 2022 release Nobody’s Home (31). Halo also debuts at Number 3 on both the Official Vinyl Albums Chart and Official Record Store Chart.

Finally, Teenage Fanclub land a 10th Top 40 album with Nothing Lasts Forever (30). The Glasgow alt-rock export, comprising Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley, Francis MacDonald, Dave McGowan and Euros Childs, also see the album enter the Top 5 on both on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart (2) and Official Record Store Chart (2).

Greatest hits albums are a scam in the streaming era. It makes no sense to have them chart. Great numbers for Kylie. Same as disco I believe. It could’ve been bigger if  she released it in July when Padam was big there.
