A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after one of the most photographed trees in the country was cut down.

The tree at Sycamore Gap, next to Hadrian's Wall, was made famous when it appeared in the 1991 Kevin Costner film Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.

The 16-year-old boy is being held in police custody and is said to be assisting officers with their enquiries.

Superintendent Kevin Waring, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a world-renowned landmark and the events of today have caused significant shock, sadness and anger throughout the local community and beyond.

In all seriousness surely they can just attach it back on because the top half is still there. Just use metal poles or something to hold it in place

I mean it’s not the end of the world but doing things like this is a huge sign of anti-social behavior and this kid should be evaluated.

It’s just a tree and he should only get whatever the charge is for chopping a tree down that isn’t yours.

But imo it is alarming

It’s like a kid that kills pets, sooner or later they will become a rapist or murderer, they are a danger to everyone alive

And if by 16 you don’t know what’s right or wrong there’s not much you can do anymore.

Jail and life ruined tbh, he ended an entity with 200 years of life

That’s soo soo ****** up
