People need to understand Lorde was 17 years old when Pure Heroine dropped (and probably 15 or 16 years old when she at least started recording the album). When you're that young, it's easy to speak your opinion on things and either not think twice about what's going to come out of your mouth, or you're being controversial for attention. Now that Lorde is 26 (nearly a decade older), I'm sure she's matured and has a different perspective on things. 

 

I have to admit, when Lorde made that quip about Born to Die (or, if it wasn't Born to Die, it was Lana's music during BTD/Paradise/UV-eras), I felt similarly. But since Honeymoon, my opinion on Lana has changed. Quite frankly, any musician should be able to have the freedom to write about their experiences, as long as they are not implicitly or explicitly promoting things like racism or homophobia.
