Leptine Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 A successful transgender popstar should be embraced at least for the majority by their own community in first in order to consequently start appealing the GP, sure it's not easy regardless giving there's still lot of transphobia between people, but for sure in her case the lack of support of a big part of the LGBTQ+ community because of the Luke situation-controversy is definitely not helping her case. Also, she probably doesn't have the right team because she really didn't take advantage of the 'Unholy' visibility in the right way, the song with Nicki had a bit of hype but lot of people were diappointed with the trap direction of the song that honestly didn't make much sense for a supposed 'pop' artist like her. 3
ICLDXU4HS Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 The type of pop music she makes isn't popular right now and rarely does well. When it occasionally does it's usually because it's released by an already established artist. Ava who does what Kim does in a more GP-friendly way barely cracked the top 10 in the US with a song that was a smash in the rest of the word. I think arguably her best attempt was Future Starts Now as it's somewhat close to the sound Dua has been doing, it just wasn't anywhere near as good of a song as the Future Nostalgia hits. They also neglected trying to appeal to a female audience (which is needed for an MPG), everything she does feels more geared towards the gays. A New Rules/Don't Start Now-type song could have helped. I think she would have had a better chance at happening like a decade ago.
Happylittlepunk Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 I think Kim was always going to struggle sing a mainstream pop act. Simply because she is a transgender woman. I think realistically as others said she should’ve focused on having a loyal following first before attempting to break out commercially. She should’ve locked a lgbtq community support before trying to appeal to the gp. She did it too soon and now nobody really supports her.
shoganai Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 She did things already seen hundreds of times. Plus transphobia and her not being a memorable talent.
Heldenzeit Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 Imo she carved a nice niche for herself.
Robburro Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 mainstream label + Unholy she had that cute niche spot on the pop scene until both of those things
dumbsparce Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 Why did you completely ignore Turn Off The Light? Had a label invested in it and turned it into a mini-movie she'd be able to start building a fanbase. Those songs sounded so expensive and innovative, it's buffling how they put zero effort into promoting anything from that era. The concept was so cool and the songs painted a whole universe yet there were zero visuals shot. Why?? And after that, the quality dipped big time. Again, how?? Like for real, does anyone know what happened? I want conceptual Kim back. Enough of the screechy mess her newer songs are. 6
MaxMartin Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 Something shifted before Malibu , cause that was the first song that showed an artistic dip, it sounded weak for an album launch. The same happened with FST I understand the problematique shelving cause that album (although sonically cohesive) is very very weak... The choruses are not it, hooks are lacking , it's just very poor overall. Feed the beast was just a mess... previously shelved songs mixed with unfinished sounding songs (Thousand pieces) , Ava Max's rejects (minute , KOH) and some return to form songs (uhoh, claws). She needs to get her **** together and take herself more seriously leaving this over-sexualized image. 1
Bubble Tea Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 I think there's always been really intense expectations placed upon Kim, like this German trans girl was supposed to be as big as Dua Lipa or something? Let's be serious. A realistic level we should hope to see Kim at is Charli XCX level - strong bops, cute collabs, but staying in her lane, she is an artist for the gays - there's nothing wrong with that! Yes she's an iconic and talented legend but Feed The Beast is a very strong attempt to appeal to the entire GP and alas, "Alone" was her song that could have been but it didn't quite hit the mark for gays or straights. Anyway I don't care, love her and all her music.
HRHCOLLECTION Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 People want her to make the same music as her early stuff but for her to reproduce that spark, she needs Dr Luke, which is what people hate her for. Soooo…. She’s stuck in a loop

Idk, Clarity had a lot of tracks (Sweet Spot, Got My Number, Broken for example) that could’ve been radio hits with the right push. I think this is poor management/strategy at hand which for every record after Clarity has guided her decisions, since Clarity didn’t take off the way they wanted.

I fully believe they were just chasing what they thought would work and not trying to make good songs. 1
Janet Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 You forgot to mention the impending flop tour 1
Polgg48 Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 investing OVER overbudget on late night shows/EMA pricey videos on n/a songs hindered her opportunities, kim was best on feed the fans new tracks every months or two prior to malibu. so... bad team
Cain Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Era 1, Clarity and the TOTL volumes were great. Everything was going the right way for her then Idk why she thought abandoning that sound was the way to go? She basically alienated her fanbase and the GP was never locked in. I really wonder who tf thought IJWAR or the trap influences in Alone were good ideas
Magic Mike Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 She’s just mediocre and her music is just not it. Ugh as for being trans, ethel cain will faster achieve the LEGEND status with her music, of which Kim will never ever even taste
Elvenpath Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 She was more interesting when she was an independent artist tbh.

Nico Robin Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 tbh if Alone would have the pop production everyone was craving for right from the start we wouldnt be here rn. Sure its success wouldnt sell out arenas but it wouldve been a huge hit which could give the album somewhat of longevity (and maybe even future singles, rip KOH ). I feel like she wasted a lot of hype because of that
