OMG WIG my copy of The Art of Final Fantasy XVI just came and it's so beautiful :jonnycat:

The Rafflesia boss in FFXII was straight-up nasty. It kept spamming all the existing status effects and especially Disease, for which I randomly had only one healing item. Idk how I did it.

About 60 hours into FFVII and I still have 3 chapters to go :rip: but I finally beat Odin's ass

Currenty playing Rebirth, and at times it's the best looking game I've ever seen. But sometimes it does look questionable, like some texture work. But in movement this is one of the prettiest games ever. Square really went all out presentation wise, the effects are mesmerizing.

I'm currently almost 40 hours in. But there's a fatigue I'm feeling. I think I should stop doing all the side stuff and focus on the story. The characters look so good.

The card mini game sucks though. I really hate card games. And I really hated it when the game forced me to play the game. Good thing I had the option to give up and leave the tournament immediately.

I normally don't like them, but Queen's Blood is incredible imo.

Fort Condor and Gears & Gambits, on the other hand... :biblio:

I also don't care for card games but Queens Blood was so addictive to play lol Definitely one of the better mini games in my opinion

I only cleared chapter 5 last night lol I'm going so slow with this one but I do love it

Queens Blood >>>> once you get certain broken cards you can drag everyone, they did BOTCHED Fort Condor tho. Intermission FC was so fun

Thinking about doing another run of Zodiac age :jonnycat: it's always been my favorite FF game, despite me never beating it :toofunny2:

I just finished this run of Lightning Returns and got all the trophies.

I have so many thoughts on the FF13 trilogy with what went right and what went wrong that I could write a thesis on it.

In short, Lightning and the entire cast deserved so much better, from SE and also the fanbase. FF13 really suffered from being the first FF released in a social media age. FF13 as a game has aged extremely well and is unironically ahead of it's time, Lightning Returns not so much. FF13-2 and LR were designed to try to cater to a bunch of FF loud fans (obnoxious FF7 stans if we are being real) that were never going to buy those two games. The first game had so many interesting concepts that were in the datalog that should have been directly shown in game but those sequels could have expanded on that instead of the hodgepodge they threw together to make the sequels "open world" to solve the complaints about the first half of the game being in a "corridor". It all makes sense in the end but you can tell it was written as they went along.

At the end of Lightning Returns when you do the 4 trials to get the Ultima Weapon and you see those small flashbacks to the previous games I legit got emotional thinking about me playing the original 14 years ago

Anyways, it's #JusticeForLightning

I totally agree. I loved FF13 on release, and I thought the sequels were obvious downgrades (but I loved them playing them both too). FF10 is just as much a "corridor" game as 13 but no one ever complains about it for that game :deadbanana:

edit: oh also:

People really don't know what they want. There is this obsession with "open world" games but if a game is "open world" then the story is likely going to be a mess., sure there is cases of good story + good open world but those are a truly a dime a dozen. FF games are all linear by nature and it's important for them to be linear to tell the narrative correctly. What people want is free choice, or the illusion of it rather. They want the ability to do some optional stuff on the map and rewards some sort of exploration, which I can understand - but they cry about it the wrong way and just say "open world!!!!" and then we are left with messes like Lightning Returns and FF15 (altho I do enjoy FF15).

Like in FF10s case for example, I guess you can, for the most part, go back to previous areas and farm (except the starting areas like Besaid/Kilika and the whole Macalania Temple/Home/Bevelle part which kinda seperates the game for a bit). It also has some free choice in the temples where you can make a concious decision to not get destruction spheres etc but at the core it's still a corridor and extremely linear. I guess if FF13 had some explorable cities on Cocoon it might have went down better but at the same token they'd have to rewrite the story to make them revisitable when you're basically branded as a wanted criminal on Cocoon until the end of the game.

I didn't finish the first FF7 remake (I will at some point soon) but the streets tell me that game is just as much as a corridor as FF13 and there is nothing but praise for that game. I guess people didn't want to give FF13 a chance also misogyny if we're being honest!

I kinda have the urge to play so many FF games that I'm gonna end up procastinating FF7R for another year. Feeling like playing 3, 5 or 6 soon.. or my 12th playthrough of the best game of all time FF10 :clap3:

Towns and cities are a big part of world-building and exploration in RPGs, and tbh that's what was really missing for me to love the worlds of 13. I get that the story was constant forward momentum and they didn't want to stop the pace (and just did not want to make intricate cities on the next gen hardware lol), but I never connected with the lore as much because I didn't really get my exploration fix. Fun combat tho.

Hardly a complaint exclusive to 13 btw! Miss 16 was a huge tease with all the beautiful cutscene cities that we never get to explore. That was one of my big red flags with that game, stopping it short of being an all-timer.

Rebirth is a breath of fresh air for bringing back some cute settlements to play around in :heart2: Love her.

Open worlds were a big selling point for most franchises starting in the PS360 era so that's what fans wanted/expected a decade after X

i haven't touched the 13 trilogy in ages, but I'm perched for the eventual remasters. I beat the first two but never touched LR beyond the demo

I wish I'd experienced X in its original form first because those faces in the remaster were really not the tea:

Absolutely. Not only did they ruin their appearances, but they watered down the facial animations/expressions to almost nothing, especially Seymour: his expressions are particularly evil and conniving in the original.

Idk if I posted about it in this thread but I'm trying to beat at least one final fantasy game every month this year :gaycat4: I've been doing well so far:

Jan -> FF16, Crisis Core Reunion

Feb -> FF7R

March -> Intermission (a bit of a cheat hihi but since I beat two in Jan I'm letting it go)

April might get a little dicey, I'm like 30 hrs into Rebirth so im hoping I'll have it wrapped as my May game and I've also been playing FF4 DS before I go to sleep. I haven't played 4 in probably 15 years, it's so nostalgic :jonny6: it'll be a struggle but I'm gonna try to have it beat as my April game

I just finished FF3 PR yesterday and starting FF5 PR today.

FF3 was like fine.. the story is basically nonexistent however it truly is THE FF game since it introduced so many concepts that are reused and it was cute as a chronic FF14 player to see how many things come from that game. The job system is nice but they poorly balanced the jobs so you basically only use a handful and the game is kinda short :skull:

I'm kinda gagging at FF5 so far. The evolution of the job system :jonny5: The story is pretty standard crystal stuff so far but it just makes me want to play Bravely Default again afterwards. FF5 is one of the only FF games I haven't played yet and I am kinda sad that the PR doesn't have the optional content from the other remakes but maybe I'll play those one day since I love this kinda job system a lot.

Yeah the OG faces were good especially Tidus and Yuna.

The only one who got better was Wakka. :dies:

I get the same way. I just beat the original FF7 a few days ago, and I was trying to start FF6 last night, but I got bored really fast because I just want to play them all at once lol. I'm always chasing the high of the good parts of each game, but it's easy to quit when you get to a boring part you've already done and don't wanna do again. 7 and 10 are the ones that I've played so many times that it's easy for me to bulldoze through the whole thing because I know what to do at every turn.
