discussion I'm reigniting discussion of an LGBT country. I believe we need a backup plan

I get it. It sounds silly, unfeasible and juvenile. And this might be my 1642354th time opening a thread about a hypothetical LGBT country. But ask yourself this. Are you comfortable being at the whims of the current status quo and with the way things move in wavelengths in history? Are you really counting on the uptick in fascism to boil over after a few years, or even a decade, so things can move back to where we were hoping to head in the early 10s-2015?

 

I'm not saying all LGBT individuals in the world, have to migrate en-masse to a hypothetical LGBT country, but I just can't help but think that we, as the most oppressed group on this planet, need a home base, a LITERAL safe space that we can retreat to if things take a turn for the worst (a la Handmaid's Tale). Plus there are plenty of anti-LGBT countries who may most-likely never progress and displaced LGBT individuals from these hellholes could definitely find a home in this country in the event that their plea for asylum in a typical western country doesn't go through for some reason.

 

Another thing I may add is that I'm aware of the division within the "community." I know that plenty of us have to contend with racism, biphobia and transphobia from our own. All of us, including myself, have had to be held to task for perpetuating all these negative isms, even if it was unintentionally, or subconsciously, at one point. But in this scenario, any sort of visible discrimination of any kind, would met be with a three-strike followed a simple deportation, just to ensure that there'd be no corruption. The founders of this country would most-definitely have to be people from various parts of the diaspora. In other words, NO cis-white gays elites allowed 

 

So with that being said. Please ONLY chime in if you have any sort of ideas, even if they're small scale proposals, that can move this conversation forward. I, myself, don't have any connections to anybody (who is higher up in any sector to possibly get this to materialize) but I just thought maybe that I'd keep this idea alive in the minds of ATRLers and who knows, maybe one of you could, one day, become a massive proponent and a key player in gettting this done. And the way I see it, if we get nuked (or Tulsa bombed) trying, I feel like it would have been well-worth the attempt .

 

So what do you think? Again please only post if you believe this could happen & is a necessity. Where do you see this hypothetical country being? How long do you think it would take for this idea to materialize? Post your ideas of an LGBT country here!

It would be a disaster. Nothing would ever get done because people on the left tend to have a habit of dividing themselves. 
 

On top of that. With no military, the country would get attacked. It’s not feasible. Plus who lands are we taking? Wouldn’t that make gays colonizers too?

it would literally be targeted by the worst of the worst countries with extremist religious ideals….bombing attacks, hate crimes, even nuke threats/attacks would be a daily thing, unfortunately.

… don’t get me wrong, I’ve kind of jokingly entertained the notion. Believe it or not, Marvel Comics has actually explored why this probably wouldn’t work out. I would love some sort of protected environment where we would be able to thrive and prosper without fear of the hatred, bigotry, and danger of those less tolerant being able to take away our rights or indiscriminately decide that we should be killed for simply existing. 
 

As much as I would like something like that, it’d have to be some sort of protected land (somewhat similar to a reservation) and we would still be reliant -at least at first - on the kindness/resources of another nation-state. Sure, we could eventually get some sort of agricultural, technological, cultural exports going but ultimately we’d have to receive funding of some sort to get started. 
 

Putting a massive target on a group of marginalized individuals by gathering them in one place is a risk as well. It’s not like we can simply ask someone to prove that they are a part of the lgbt community and it leads to security issues. 
 

becoming a nation within another countries borders is virtually impossible. It also opens up the possibilities of sanctions from other countries who’s exports we would need during the early years until the infrastructure was in place to become self sustaining. 
 

it’s a great idea, but idk if it could ever be made practical.

Cute idea but I don't think it's feasible at all, now or ever. I feel like you just need to go to the gay district of your nearest large city, take some ecstasy and party with some queers tbh

(1) where?  All the good land seems to be taken and I don’t think we could ethically colonize a current place.

 

(2) How would we handle reproduction? 
 

(3) How would we handle immigration? Like what if a lot of straight people immigrate?

Where would you establish this country? No other country would give up land, espacially arable land. 

How would you prove someone is a member of the LGBTQ+ community? 
 

How would you defend it from homophobic places that now have everyone they hate conveniently in one location? 
 

Where would you get the money to build infrastructure, housing, public services etc.

Couldn't we start off small in that case and just build up from there? I know there most definitely are a sizeable amount of LGBT people in militaries across the world. Plus we got a number of straight allies as well that I'm sure are willing to go to bat for us if it ever need be. We also have a few key players in high places (governments and the elite) that could maybe get some moves going in place for us.

 

As far as where we'd get the land for this, I'm just throwing it out there but perhaps we could start off as some sort of resort city somewhere, on an island. Or maybe just purchase some unclaimed rural area in a western country and just become an unofficial LGBT state. Or we could even become some sort of floating-city too.

We just create a society so disapproving of being hetero that the straighties are forced to stay closeted their entire lives.

Nah. This isn’t it. Yeah - I realize that some countries and cultures essentially force others to do this (due to fear of death or ostracism) but we would have to be better than this. Idk. If it were to even be attempted, there would have to be some sort of… idk… green card/extended visitation thing connecting these individuals to those who are verifiably a permanent resident/citizen. Could you really tell an lgbt couple that their straight children aren’t allowed in? How would bisexuals who end up in heteronormative relationships be handled?

Israel's system basically. Gay people get jerked off by other gay people in the room, right after landing at the airport, therefore proving that they're actually gay, and get their citizenship in under an hour. Male semen gets collected and the send to labs for tests, then later to impregnate volunteering lesbians, who want to have kids. That keeps it anonymous and everyone's happy.

We'll have a constant flow of LGTB applying from different countries.
